  • Rodziah Stands by PKR Decision on Selangor MB Issue Malaysian Insider Aug 14, 2014
Rodziah stands by PKR decision on Selangor MB issue Malaysian Insider Aug 14, 2014 Selangor executive councillor Rodziah Ismail will stick by PKR's decision on the state menteri besar issue, saying today she wanted to fulfil the mandate given to Pakatan Rakyat (PR) to run the country's wealthiest state. The Batu Tiga assemblyman's decision meant she risks losing the welfare and women affair's portfolio in the state government led by Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, who was sacked by PKR on Saturday. "I would like to explain my stand in the context of the latest development in the state administration of Selangor. "In that context, I agree with the decision of PKR, of which I am a member. My agreement, I believe, is to fulfil the trust and take care of the mandate given by the people in GE13 to Pakatan Rakyat to run Selangor," she said in a three-paragraph statement issued early this morning. Rodziah also said in the statement that she had been away in Bangkok, Thailand, for the past three days representing PKR in a political course. Khalid had sacked five other executive councillors from PKR and DAP on Tuesday, leaving only him and four PAS excos in the state government. The five are Datuk Teng Chang Khim (DAP), V. Ganabatirau (DAP) and Ean Yong Hian Wah (DAP), Elizabeth Wong (PKR) and Dr Daroyah Alwi (PKR). The remaining Selangor exco members from PAS are Iskandar Abdul Samad, Dr Halimah Ali, Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi and Sallehen Mukhyi. Yesterday, Khalid said the sacked excos must vacate their office in two weeks.

However, when contextualized against Malaysia’s politics of divides and dissent starting from 1999 onward, there are some newer characteristics of women’s involvement in formal politics. This paper explores the specificities of women’s experience in formal politics under the one-party dominant rule of the National Front before it was defeated in the May 2018 general election. The paper questions various incidents of political transitioning from an old to a newer political regime. Processes such as the collaboration between women’s civil society and formal state political actors, the cultivation of clientelist and patronage relations, and the main- tenance of a cohesive multiparty coalition as a strategy for electoral advantage have all had fruitful bearings on the way the formalization of women in politics has developed. However, given the insufficiency of these developments for increasing women’s representation, this paper proposes the more reliable gender quota or reserved seats mechanism as one of the considerations for gender electoral reform.

  • PKR's Rodziah Still Exco Member, Says Khalid Malaysian Insider Aug
PKR’s Rodziah still exco member, says Khalid Malaysian Insider Aug 13, 2014 BY ANISAH SHUKRY Batu Tiga assemblyman Rodziah Ismail is the sole PKR Selangor executive councillor , Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim said today, after having sacked all the other PKR and DAP members from the state government. "I shall wait for Rodziah to return to Malaysia and will make my decision then," Khalid told a press conference at the state secretariat building today. "If she agrees to work with the remaining councillors, she will stay on. Otherwise, she will also be terminated." The Selangor executive council (exco) now comprises four PAS assemblymen and Rodziah, after five DAP and PKR exco members were sacked yesterday for declaring they no longer supported Khalid as the MB. Khalid said yesterday he needed only four exco members for the state government to function, as stated in Article 53(2)b of the Selangor State Law. The Star reported today that Rodziah is in Bangkok on an official trip and is expected to return this weekend. Rodziah had signed a statement yesterday along with her PKR and DAP peers declaring that Khalid's and his state cabinet's functions were limited to transition capacity. "Any decision the exco makes must be put to a vote so that Khalid's functions are limited to transition capacity," the statement read. " We PKR and DAP exco members will not meet with Khalid (aside from the weekly exco meetings) to avoid any discussions on party positions." The statement prompted Khalid to issue termination letters to all DAP and PKR exco members, except for Rodziah , who is in charge of welfare and women's affairs.
