MLB Baseball Weekly --- Friday, April 14th, 2006 BY MATTHEW HATFIELD Welcome to our first edition of MLB Weekly for this season on Good Friday. I’m very excited that spring has come, the temperature is beginning to warm up on a more consistent basis and baseball has begun. A lot has already transpired early on in this 2006 baseball campaign so lets get to it…. Bonds, Barry Bonds: No Laughing or Lying Matter: It never ends with Barry Bonds, does it? Third on the all-time home run list, trailing only Babe Ruth and Henry ‘Hank’ Aaron, Bonds has been the center of attention for the baseball media and sports media. No surprise either. Just look at all the stuff revolving him; he’s a human lightning rod for public interest. The latest thing in the Bonds timeline: a federal grand jury investigating whether or not he committed perjury in 2003 when he testified in 2003 that he never used steroids. The news was first broken on Thursday night by CNN. What’s it all mean? That spotlight is only going to shine brighter, and maybe not all for the better. Barry Lamar Bonds is still stuck on 708 home runs for his career, an illustrious one at that I might add. (AP) Lets take a closer look at all the happenings surrounding the man chasing the Babe as well as Aaron’s mark of 755 career dingers. Before the season, Bonds dressed up as Paula Abdul, garnishing more than a few laughs. However, the steroid allegations and the release of the book ‘Game of Shadows’ was no laughing matter for the Bonds party.

The Boston Red Sox Saturday, April 4, 2020 * The Boston Globe When can sports resume? Attempts by Asian leagues provide valuable insight for Major League Baseball Alex Speier Half a world away from home, two healthy former members of the Red Sox sit in two-week quarantines while waiting for baseball to resume in their Asian leagues. In Newburyport, another ex-Red Sox player contemplates the possibility of his own two-week quarantine if he wants to pitch in the coming months. The three players — former top pitching prospect Casey Kelly, first baseman/outfielder Jerry Sands (a member of the organization for roughly four months who never played for the team), and former big league pitcher Justin Haley — serve as reminders of the many challenges that await the resumption of sports leagues in the wake of a global pandemic. While all of the major US sports leagues remain in shutdown as part of the public health response to the COVID-19 spread, three professional baseball leagues in Asia are in varying states of operation. Efforts in Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan to conduct games offer insight into the challenges sports leagues here will face. Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association have established a loose date of April 10 by which to have discussions about the resumption of play. Those conversations will be informed by what’s happening in other countries’ efforts to restart. Among those early lessons: ▪ A single positive test can disrupt an entire league Little has changed in the three weeks since Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert tested positive for coronavirus, an event that served as the lead domino for the shutdown first of the NBA and then all US leagues.

Contact: Wirz & Associates For Immediate Release (203) 877-5800 ([email protected]) September 30, 2002 SMOLTZ BREAKS ALL-TIME POINTS RECORD AND SAVES 55 GAMES TO TOP GAGNE IN N.L. RACE WHILE KOCH CLAIMS A.L. ROLAIDS TITLE Braves Romp to Third Team Bullpen Crown Atlanta’s John Smoltz and Billy Koch of Oakland, who likely will be key figures if their teams advance very far in baseball’s postseason, already have walked off with impressive individual honors by winning their respective league titles in the 27th annual Rolaids Relief Man competition. It was the first such award for both closers. Smoltz, who turned from a Cy Young-winning career as a starter to a closer late last season when elbow problems threatened his longevity, rang up the second best saves season (55) in major league history and edged Los Angeles flamethrower Eric Gagne for National League Rolaids honors, 164 points to 159. Gagne’s 52 saves are the fifth highest total on record. Smoltz was successful in his last 16 save opportunities to post the highest point total in the competition’s history, topping Trevor Hoffman’s 161 points for San Diego in 1998. His 55 saves broke the N.L. record and came within two of the major league mark of 57 established by Bobby Thigpen of the Chicago White Sox in 1990. (See Page 4 for all-time saves and points leaders.) Koch’s first season in Oakland after being obtained in a trade with Toronto was a workhorse-like campaign for the American League West-winning Athletics.

The Boston Red Sox Sunday, September 4, 2011 * The Boston Globe A grandiose win for Red Sox Peter Abraham For a few minutes yesterday afternoon, everything was as it was supposed to be for Carl Crawford. He sent a grand slam sailing into the stands in right field at Fenway Park in the fourth inning and arrived at the plate to hand slaps and hugs from teammates Adrian Gonzalez, David Ortiz, and Mike Aviles. As the sold-out crowd cheered and some even chanted his name, Crawford walked back to the dugout smiling. His shot helped propel the Sox to a 12-7 victory against the Texas Rangers. ―That‘s the guy we used to play against. He changes a game just like that,‘‘ Ortiz said, smacking his hands together for emphasis. ―One swing, look what it did.‘‘ But even a grand slam can only change the statistics slightly at this point in the season. Crawford is hitting .252 with 11 home runs and 52 RBIs. After stealing 47 bases last season, he has 17 this year. His .690 OPS is a whopping 161 points less than it was in 2010. Whatever personal goals Crawford may have had when the Sox signed him to a lucrative seven-year deal last winter won‘t be attained. That contract has sat on his shoulders like an anvil from the first day of spring training. ―I don‘t look at the numbers,‘‘ Crawford said. ―I guess when [the media] reminds me, then I know. But other that that, I just try to take each new day as it comes.

Former Red Translates Success on Eaton Ballfield to Success on the Major League Ballfield Reds’ Graduate Running the Top Minor League Baseball Program in America ’88 Graduate Marc Gustafson Developed the Young Heroes that Earned the Colorado Rockies the National League Championship, and the Title as Organization of the Year by Baseball America Let’s be honest, if the Colorado Rockies’ historic winning streak last September and October wasn’t one of the most exciting times in your life, then you’ve had one heck of an exciting life. For the rest of us, the Rockies’ winning streak that propelled them to the World Series was a time that will not be forgotten. The Rockies became the first team in over 100 years of Major League Baseball history to win 21 of 22 games at the end of the season and into the postseason, taking them from near the bottom of the division and nearly 5 games back from multiple teams in the Wild Card standings, all the way to a one‐game playoff against the San Diego Padres to get into the postseason. Following that 13‐inning victory, the Rockies went on to sweep the 2nd hottest team in baseball at the time, the Philadelphia Phillies, and then complete a sweep of the division‐winning Arizona Diamondbacks, capping off the most amazing winning streak in Major League baseball history. And the Rockies didn’t do this with players they had traded for or signed through free agency; they did it through the homegrown talent in their minor league system.
