  • MLB Baseball Weekly --- Friday, April 14Th, 2006 by MATTHEW HATFIELD
MLB Baseball Weekly --- Friday, April 14th, 2006 BY MATTHEW HATFIELD Welcome to our first edition of MLB Weekly for this season on Good Friday. I’m very excited that spring has come, the temperature is beginning to warm up on a more consistent basis and baseball has begun. A lot has already transpired early on in this 2006 baseball campaign so lets get to it…. Bonds, Barry Bonds: No Laughing or Lying Matter: It never ends with Barry Bonds, does it? Third on the all-time home run list, trailing only Babe Ruth and Henry ‘Hank’ Aaron, Bonds has been the center of attention for the baseball media and sports media. No surprise either. Just look at all the stuff revolving him; he’s a human lightning rod for public interest. The latest thing in the Bonds timeline: a federal grand jury investigating whether or not he committed perjury in 2003 when he testified in 2003 that he never used steroids. The news was first broken on Thursday night by CNN. What’s it all mean? That spotlight is only going to shine brighter, and maybe not all for the better. Barry Lamar Bonds is still stuck on 708 home runs for his career, an illustrious one at that I might add. (AP) Lets take a closer look at all the happenings surrounding the man chasing the Babe as well as Aaron’s mark of 755 career dingers. Before the season, Bonds dressed up as Paula Abdul, garnishing more than a few laughs. However, the steroid allegations and the release of the book ‘Game of Shadows’ was no laughing matter for the Bonds party.

The Boston Red Sox Saturday, April 4, 2020 * The Boston Globe When can sports resume? Attempts by Asian leagues provide valuable insight for Major League Baseball Alex Speier Half a world away from home, two healthy former members of the Red Sox sit in two-week quarantines while waiting for baseball to resume in their Asian leagues. In Newburyport, another ex-Red Sox player contemplates the possibility of his own two-week quarantine if he wants to pitch in the coming months. The three players — former top pitching prospect Casey Kelly, first baseman/outfielder Jerry Sands (a member of the organization for roughly four months who never played for the team), and former big league pitcher Justin Haley — serve as reminders of the many challenges that await the resumption of sports leagues in the wake of a global pandemic. While all of the major US sports leagues remain in shutdown as part of the public health response to the COVID-19 spread, three professional baseball leagues in Asia are in varying states of operation. Efforts in Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan to conduct games offer insight into the challenges sports leagues here will face. Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association have established a loose date of April 10 by which to have discussions about the resumption of play. Those conversations will be informed by what’s happening in other countries’ efforts to restart. Among those early lessons: ▪ A single positive test can disrupt an entire league Little has changed in the three weeks since Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert tested positive for coronavirus, an event that served as the lead domino for the shutdown first of the NBA and then all US leagues.

LINE DRIVES THE NATIONAL COLLEGIATE BASEBALL WRITERS NEWSLETTER (Volume 48, No. 4, June 29, 2009) The President’s Message By NCBWA President Joe Dier NCBWA Membership: More than four months after its official start back on Feb. 20, the 2009 college baseball season has found its way into the record books. What a season it was, with LSU, one of five different teams to hold down the top position in the NCBWA’s weekly national rankings during the year and besting Texas to capture the College World Series championship series at Omaha’s historic Rosenblatt Stadium. Worth noting from the 63rd national championship tournament is that the 15-game event drew a record 336,076 fans to Rosenblatt Stadium. And though this year’s champion, LSU, is among the 23 teams that have previously reigned as NCAA baseball champions, college baseball welcomed two newcomers to its national championship event. Southern Miss and Virginia became the 107th and 108th schools to compete in the CWS. More than a third of the schools that compete on the NCAA Division I level have now advanced to college baseball’s biggest stage. With construction on the new 24,000-seat TD Ameritrade Stadium in downtown Omaha underway and venerable Rosenblatt Stadium set to host its 61st and final CWS in 2010, there could added incentive, if only for sentimental reasons, to advance to college baseball’s “final eight” next season. Back to 2009, though, and congratulations to our recently-crowned kings of diamonds: NCAA Division I national champion LSU (56-17), NCAA Division II champion Lynn University (46-16) of Boca Raton, Fla., and NCAA Division III champion University of St.

  • 2012 Rockies Minor League Preview
1 | P a g e Statement/Acknowledgements/Disclaimer Following a minor league system is endlessly fulfilling. Whether your big league team is competing for a division title or the first overall draft pick, there is always a minor league team and several prospects in every organization worth following. There is always someone to dream on, and in that way, it keeps that often short-lived spring optimism alive year-round. While minor league coverage is increasing constantly, it is still difficult to get involved cold. Here is your preview on all four minor league affiliates and the most notable prospects at each level. Every player in the system is above the Mensa level of baseball talent in the world. It feels insulting to leave out most players or to summarize an impact prospect in three inches of a column. On the other hand, this preview is 21 pages long and nearly 6500 words. I have not seen every player in this report with my own eyes, but I have seen a few of them. I relied on scouting reports from Baseball Prospectus, Baseball America, John Sickels, and other contacts I have made in prospect dialogue. Some information behind paywalls is alluded to but never excerpted directly. I also need to thank Greg Stanwood and Tim Zappe constructing and maintaining RockiesRoster.com, and to Mike Sjerven and Charlie Drysdale for letting me steal their pictures to provide color. Field diagrams were taken from each affiliate’s website, and park factors were taken from StatCorner.com. Team logos featured in this report are the registered trademarks of each featured organization.
