Giants spank D-backs By JIM LITKE Associated Press CHICAGO — Somebody needs to ask Bud Selig: If is so rich, how come it’s not smarter? Barely a week goes by without the com- missioner reminding someone that for all its supposed woes, baseball posted record attendance and revenue last season. Selig would have us believe that’s because of shrewd leadership; his critics argue the game is so good at selling itself that even Bud isn’t bumbling or greedy enough to mess it up. As the latest tempest-in-a-teapot brew- ing around baseball proves, the truth lies somewhere in between. But if Selig and the rest of the people in charge want to make sure today’s kids come out to the ballparks as often and spend as freely as their parents do, they’ve got work to do so that the per- ception tracks to the reality. A story making the rounds in Chicago this week has MLB as the villain in a wran- gle over whether youth league teams can call themselves “Cubs,” “White Sox,” “Yankees” or even “Angels” for that mat- ter, without putting some money in its cof- fers. The short answer to that very compli- cated legal question is yes. MLB wasn’t doing anything more than any business would to protect its trademark from freeloaders and in fact, the organiza- tion goes out of its way to make the game affordable to just about anybody who’s interested. And it’s not just out of charita- ble instincts; the kids playing the game now are baseball’s future customers. Bruce Hering Boonville Opposed to Measure B To the Editor: Those people concerned about the dangers to Mendocino County residents of the growing of marijuana would do well to concentrate their efforts on working to make marijuana legal, not on passing Measure B. The only way the threats to public safety associated with growing marijuana will be eliminated is by making marijuana legal. Legalize it, regulate it like alcohol and tobacco, and you’ll see the price drop, the need for guns to guard it disap- pear, the home invasion a thing of the past. Measure B grows out of the same delusion that gave us Prohibition and overfilled our jails and prisons with victims of the “war on drugs” : that making something illegal will mean people stop doing it. Vote no on Measure B. Deborah White Ukiah Save Mendocino? To the Editor: As a rural homeowner in Ukiah, I’m frankly baffled by the myriad yellow signs urging me to “Save Mendocino” and vote in favor of Measure B. I can only imagine that those involved with such a slogan must neither leave the county, nor read the news. The nation’s economy, and in particular the real estate market, is in turmoil. Foreclosures are at record highs, and property values are plummeting. Mendocino County, mean- while, continues to enjoy rising property values in a broad sec- tion of the market. People are selling plots of land that cost a tens of thousands twenty years ago for hundreds of thousands now. My own property -- a small cabin on some acreage, has increased in value by about 40 percent in three years, and I paid more than double what it was purchased for by the previous owner only a few years before that. This increase in value means an increase in tax revenue, which means more funding for schools. Now it could be that there is suddenly a great interest in mak- ing wine, or that the timber industry is sucking the dot-commers to our rural county, but frankly I don’t think so, since no one in this country is constructing new homes. Instead I think it’s Mendocino’s pot-friendly attitude that’s causing this economic boom when the rest of the nation teeters on a recession. Who are the people in support of measure B? They can’t pos- sibly be land-owners, as outlined above. They can’t be business owners, because millions of dollars in cash is good for business, not bad. They can’t be waitresses, unless they don’t like their tips? They can’t be construction workers; they tell me every site they go to has a pot garden. Maybe it’s the parents of young people, who remember the good old days before Measure G, when their children couldn’t find marijuana? No? That can’t be it? So I must ask, how is yanking out the economic backbone of the county going to “Save Mendocino County?” It seems either extremely misleading, or downright disingenuous to say that it will save anything. How about the slogan “Yes on B, Become the Next Flint, Michigan.” That seems a little more apropos. Speaking of misleading, dear editor, the headline from May 18th, “Pot Growing in Forest a Serious Concern,” without quo- tation marks around the words “Serious Concern,” makes it an editorial, not a piece of unbiased reporting. I learned that in my Journalism 101 class years ago. Here’s a new headline for you: “Doomed Economy a ‘Serious Concern’” -- you can quote me on that. Trevor Ryan Ukiah Supports Measure B To the Editor: I am wondering how many residents of this county know that the medical marijuana growers are using up a great deal of our water. It takes two gallons of water for one plant per day and in the case of large mature plants it can go up to 15 gallons of water per day for one plant. A law enforcement official has recently estimated that there are approximately 9,000 medical marijuana patients with doc- tor’s recommendations that enable those people to grow mari- juana for medical reasons. These patients are allowed to grow 25 plants each, which means approximately 225,000 plants may be grown legally. At a minimum of two gallons of water per plant, per day (remem- ber that the larger mature plants take more water) marijuana growers use at least 450,000 gallons of water to maintain their maximum number of plants per day. Multiply that by the typi- cal growing time, which I was told (by a medical marijuana grower friend of mine) is roughly two months and the result is 27 million gallons of water being used by the 9000 growers in a season. Recently, there have been more news stories about water, or, B-2 – FRIDAY, MAY 30, 2008 FORUM THE UKIAH DAILY JOURNAL

From the same voter pamphlet in the section, “Full text on Measure B,” subsec- tion four, are remarks about Senate Bill 420. SB 420 sets the limit for the state as, “six mature plants or 12 immature plants per qualified patient’s needs.” This provision of law provided by SB 420 ensures protection for the medical marijuana patient and ensures that the qualified patient will get enough marijuana for their medical needs. The opponents of Measure B would like for you to believe their fabrication over the provision of law provided by Senate Bill 420. Which will you believe, the Senate Bill 420 or the fabrication made by the opponents to Measure B? What Measure B will do is reduce the immense tonnage of marijuana that is available in Mendocino County. Let us look at some more math and examine again the emperor’s new clothes and the naked truth about marijuana produced in Mendocino County. I don’t know the actual number of qualified medical marijuana patients in Mendocino County. It is not unreasonable to believe that there may be as many as 1,000 individuals. The oppo- nents of Measure B have defined them as, “seriously ill people.” And with this defini- tion, they appeal to your compassion to see things their way. And with this defi- nition in mind and with our compassionate nature we will accept these 1,000 “seriously ill people” at their word. We will accept that they are the sickest people in the county and that they indeed require marijuana for their medical problems. Under current Measure G, these 1,000 sick- est people in the county are entitled by law to grow 25 marijuana plants. Let us assume that these individuals are so sick that each one demands their full entitlement to grow their 25 plants. And we with our compassionate nature, under Measure G, are going to see that they grow them. According to the UDJ publication, law enforcement has stated that these marijua- na plants can reach a huge size and produce as much as two pounds per plant. That means that each of these very sick people can demand and TIME OUT FRIDAY, MAY 30, 2008 – B-3 Editor: Chris McCartney, 468-3524 The Ukiah Daily Journal [email protected]
