Rob Nelson is an aerospace professional with more than 20 years’ experience in the industry. He works in in-service engineering, flight trials, Customer Technical Support, and as the Head of Marketing at Ultra Electronics PCS. A member of staff from Walthamstow School for Girls 8 Junior Science Competition This year we ran two annual Junior Science Competitions so we were able to host more than 35 schools. The competition was run by Ms Vidos who is Junior Science coordinator, ably supported by Ms Christou, one of our science technicians. This event involved teams of four students from each school completing different scientific problems, and being awarded marks for how well they completed their experiments and drew their conclusions. Astro-physics Talk - Prof Garrett Cotter, Oxford University In February, Garret Cotter, Professor of Physics at Exeter College, Oxford, gave an inspiring and informative talk on the formation of stars to Forest and local secondary school students, commencing with the physical conditions which lead to the collapse of gas clouds and how these conditions change over time as a protostar is formed. He is currently developing the next generation ground-based observatory for gamma-ray astronomy. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will be constructed in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile over the next few years. 9 British Science Week This year Forest’s Science Week was a huge celebration of all things science! We had activities and events running for every pupil in the school from Reception right through to Year 13. Our site was very busy with more than 1,200 external students from 13 local primary schools visiting over the course of the week. A huge thank you needs to go to Carolyn Browne and Jill White who orchestrated the whole week. “I learnt lots of things I didn’t know before and it has really inspired me to study science for my GCSEs, but now I am puzzled on which subject within science I enjoy the most because they are all so brilliant! Rejecting platitudes and romanticism, it is a powerful demonstration of the practice of contextual theology and offers a persuasive and provocative interpretation of what Jesus meant when he pronounced the poor 'blessed'. Stuart Murray Williams Stuart is a theologian and author, the founder of Urban Expression, and an experienced urban minister. He currently teaches mission and is Director of the Centre for Anabaptist studies.

The Post The role of Bishop’s Chaplain encompasses spiritual, liturgical, executive, pastoral, research and communication responsibilities. The role requires someone with clarity of thought, ability to work on complex issues with tact and diplomacy, an eye for detail as well as an appreciation of wider issues, excellent administrative and interpersonal skills and the capacity to manage and prioritise their workload according to the Bishop’s work agenda. The Chaplain will advise and be a sounding board to the Bishop and work collaboratively with other members of the team.     Serving with Accountability - 2019 2015 was the first year that we tried to incorporate the ‘serving with accountability’ dimension of ‘Transforming Presence’ alongside a slimmed down format for the Archdeacons’ Articles of Enquiry. As you know, the vision expressed in ‘Transforming Presence’ makes spirituality and evangelism two clear priorities in the life of the church, along with the need to re-imagine ministry. Nevertheless. there needs to be some means whereby this is joined together – hence the importance of serving with accountability. Every PCC is being invited to do a ‘self-audit’ in the light of the themes of ‘Transforming Presence’. The set of questions below will help you in that task. It is not intended that PCCs should cover all nine in any one year, but you may wish to look at the two or three areas where the church is doing well or to identify any weaknesses that are felt to be a hindrance to the church's mission. You should aim to consider each of the nine questions at some point over the next few years. Once you have conducted this year’s exercise, please let us have some notes of your discussions. It would be good if you could also review last year’s response as well, so that progress can be celebrated and new challenges identified.     Defining ecclesiology – alarming developments in the Church of England Dr. Charlie Bell, Charlie Bell is John Marks Fellow, College Lecturer, Praelector and Director of Studies at Girton College, Cambridge, and an Academic Clinical Fellow in Psychiatry. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and senior fellow of the Higher Education Academy. The defining ecclesiology of the Church of England has been a battleground for centuries. Even the term Anglican has been strongly seen by some as a party within the Church of England and absolutely not synonymous with it.1 Meanwhile, the Anglican Communion has sprung into existence, with huge differences in theological, liturgical, practical and existential facets. Yet, nonetheless, there are some things that are distinctly Church of England and, indeed, Anglican, that run through the different constituent churches – if not in terms of the theology, then at least in terms of praxis. The Chicago-Lambeth Quadrilateral2 is a good indicator of some of these things, and it is clear that for centuries, these kinds of things matter. They matter, not because they become idols in themselves, but because they form part of the narrative that forms our historical and living tradition. Much of what has occurred during the coronavirus crisis has revealed what these elements of fundamental praxis are and pointed out places where they might be at risk. In a previous article I have interrogated the nature of the sacraments; in this article, I wish to consider the significant ecclesiological challenge that was laid down by the Archbishop of Canterbury on 15th July in his joint ‘Statement on Episcopal Consecrations’ with the Archbishop of York.

    COST OF MINISTRY 2020 The Church of England in Essex and East London Diocese of Chelmsford FOREWORD FROM BISHOP STEPHEN It costs £22.1M to support mission and ministry in the Diocese of Chelmsford. When we received a subsidy from the National Church of £3.1M we were able to pass this on to parishes. This meant that even though many parishes faithfully paid 100% of the parish share we asked from them, this was less than the actual costs of providing a priest. All this has changed. The subsidy we received is disappearing. In parallel, we have a rising deficit. We now have to pay the entire cost of ministry. And we are no longer able to subsidise most parishes, albeit we remain committed to financially supporting parishes in deprived areas. This is one of the reasons we have been forming Mission and Ministry Units. MMUs enable us to ensure a sustainable ministry in each place. Each MMU can have at least one stipendiary priest and hopefully a number of self-supporting clergy and licensed and authorised lay ministers. But all this has to paid for. This is why our new share scheme is based upon a cost of ministry model. This booklet is designed to help you understand how the finances of the diocese work and particularly the cost of a stipendiary priest. Paying for this must be the responsibility of the parishes working together in their Mission and Ministry units.     Chelmsford Cathedral Diocesa n E ucharist with the Renewal of Commitment to Ministry and the Blessing of the Oils Maundy Thursday 1st April 2021 11am Dear sisters and brothers, It’s good to be able to gather together, albeit in the continuing restrictive circumstances, for our Chrism Eucharist and Renewal Vows this Maundy Thursday. It is the one day in the year when licensed lay ministers and clergy can come together with their bishops to support one another and recommit to their shared journey of mission and ministry in the name of our Lord. It is good that this year, we can at least have a representative congregation of ministers in our Cathedral. I hope the bigger number who join with us on line feel they can share as fully as possible in the celebration and renewal of vows.
