2.14 Significant Activities and contributions made by IQAC

IQAC created a vision roadmap/master plan of activities under IQAC for the institution for the next 5 years IQAC designed a format for feedback for alumni, hostel and parents (available in both manual and online versions). A format for semester-wise teaching plan was designed that helped in objective inspection of syllabus to be covered in a particular time frame. This will also aid in devising and forecasting the lesson plans for the forthcoming semester in advance. Department AQAR were created to compile the information for preparation of AQAR relevant from the Departments. Add on Course in IPR was introduced from Jan 2017-April 2017 for a batch of 20 students Approval for 3 New Add on Courses – i) Indian Music & Culture ii) Yoga and iii) Ayurbiology to be introduced from August 2017. Development of New College website by in house ICT team. The IQAC held discussions with IBSD , Imphal, Manipur for a joint collaborative training programme Digital initiative in the college was given a big push by creating a web-based App for the College that was officially inaugurated on the Annual Day of the College ( Feb 23, 2017)

The First Edition of the Internship Fair under the Placement Cell was organized on 3rd March, 2017 for the students of SVC which received an overwhelming response with close to 500 registrations. Around 27 Start-ups, NGOs and Corporates participated College Alumni Portal in the college website launched alongwith online feedback for enhanced alumni networking The College procured a software for the development of timetable for the academic forthcoming session A University level “Training Programme on Educational Administration” for office staff was organized ( Dec 2016) 2.15 Plan of Action by IQAC/Outcome

Curriculum Enrichment Workshop in R was initiated by Department of Economics, Add on Course in IPR was introduced in the academic session August- November 2016. New add on courses in Yoga, Ayurbiology & Indian Music to be introduced from August 2017.

Infrastructure New Academic Building work in progress. IT facilities were upgraded. A New Tissue Culture Facility was created under DU-CIC Star project that was commissioned on Feb 28, 2017.

Digital Initiatives Development of Mobile app for centralized resource for information, community, and campus life thereby enriching both student and faculty life, Software for Time table Installed, New College website

Research Interdisciplinary undergraduate student research projects were promoted under DBT Star College Status, DU-CIC Star Innovation Projects & other schemes. Many faculties published their research work in journals of high repute. Faculty also presented their research work in international and national conferences

Social Responsibility “SriVidya” – initiative of the College to adopt a rural school under DBT Star College Status.

Open House for GSSS, Khanpur Kalan Students (Sonepat District) for visits to various laboratories in the Science Departments ( September 2016).

Two day workshop on Advanced Science and Mathematics of Senior Secondary School Students from 3 Schools - Vivekananda Vidya Vihar, MARAL, Madhya Pradesh, Graphite School, Mandideep, Madhya Pradesh; Vivekananda Kendra Vidhyalay, Hurda, Bhilwara) jointly organised by DBT-STAR STATUS Sri Venkateswara College and LNJ Bhilwara Group on April 7-8, 2017.

Cleanliness Drive under the Swach Bharat Abhyan in the campus

AQAR was placed in the Governing body and was approved with the following suggestions-

1. Academic & Administrative Audit: The GB recommended the college to undertake academic and administrative audit for reveiwing the quality of academic and administrative process in the institution. The purpose is to understand the existing system and assess the strengths and weakness of the Departments & Administrative Units and to suggest the methods for continuous improvement of quality as per the criterias suggested by NAAC.

2. Development of E-Resources : The College can initiate development of E-learning modules for undergraduate courses in the form of lectures, videos through online portals.

3. E- Governance: The College can initiate total ERP Solutions for the College that can help Administration, Library, Examination and Admission Management that can benefit the College to increase the transparency of institutional policies and better management.

2.6 Innovative processes adopted by the institution in Teaching and Learning:

 Faculty across departments use different pedagogies such as chalk and talk, problem etc. depending upon concepts to facilitate better understanding among students, Learning through documentaries, movies , debates, class presentations, group discussions are encouraged

 Experimental learning through simulations (Mathematics classes), AI networks (Robotics in Electronics classes), 3D modelling & simulations (Biochemistry classes) and interdisciplinary projects.

 Use of state of art Information and Communication (ICT) facility to enable students understand concepts more clearly, wherever required.

2.8 Examination/ Evaluation Reforms initiated by the Institution (for example: Open Book Examination, Bar Coding, Double Valuation, Photocopy, Online Multiple Choice Questions)  The college follows guidelines and regulations of the University of Delhi for the final practical as well as theory exams  For Internal Assessment, an evaluation schedule (Mid Term Examinations) was followed by all the departments to bring uniformity in the process of evaluation.  Faculty members use various methods and tools for assessment such as Multiple Choice Questions, Quizzes, Class Presentations, etc, depending upon the subject and topics.  In Sciences, mock practical exam was conducted for students to enable timely revision of all exercises.

 Being a constituent college of the University of Delhi, the college follows curriculum outlined by the University. 3. Research, Consultancy and Extension

3.1 Initiatives of the IQAC in Sensitizing/Promoting Research Climate in the institution

 The IQAC facilitates promotion of research in the institution by creating awareness among faculty about various funding agencies and their research schemes.

 Projects that are extension of curriculum, and have involvement of students are promoted to give students an exposure to research methodologies.

 Multidisciplinary projects are encouraged for student participation under DBT –Star Status, and DU-CIC Projects

 Students are encouraged to participate in interdisciplinary DU Innovative Projects mentored by faculty and external experts

 The Central Instrumentation Facility ( CIF) under the DBT Star College Status caters to different department research activities

 The College Research Committee (CRC) meetings to examine guideline for manpower recruitments, purchase, overheads and student interactions.

 Popular Lectures by eminent speakers and scientists are organized to sensitize students about research and its applications in different areas

SVC is committed to the:  Upanisadic Philosophy of „satyannapramaditavyam‟- Do not deviate yourself from truth.  Vision of three doyens i.e. Ms. Durgabai Deshmukh, Dr. K.L. Rao and Dr. C. Anna Rao in the field of education and social emancipation in India.  Blend of Modern Education and the time tested traditions of Vedic Wisdom.  TTD‟s ideology of Indian Culture and Traditions.  And above all, the concept of secularism without hurting the sentiments of any community or caste and creed. Since the inception of SVC the mission and goal is adapted dynamically and continually to the needs of demanding the emerging educational system. Many times redefined and reviewed in view of National Policy of Higher Education. Best Practice I: Community outreach

The college stands by the principle that educational empowerment and other important societal benefits should be allocated based on an individual‟s strength and weaknesses and not on immediate traits, stereotypes, or other irrelevant characteristics. To address these issues the college has 3 full–fledged societies that work throughout the year to achieve these goals. These are -  The Women Development Cell (WDC): SVC SHAKTI  The Equal Opportunity cell (EOC): HUM SAB EK HAIN  The Social Service Society: PARIVARTAN (meaning - Change) The collaborative initiative of all the three societies aspires to introduce the students, staff, karamcharis, to the diversity and oneness of all people and to fulfill the constitutional mandate of a secular society/nation. Students are taught how communal, racial and gender conflict can be reduced through understanding and empathy.

Along with SVC-Shakti, Parivartan have launched the „Each One Teach One Program‟, involves holding regular classes/ coaching in English, Mathematics, and Social Studies etc. in the college lawns. Most of the students staying in hostel volunteer themselves for this noble cause.The WDCs community outreach program takes into account the pressing reality of gender discrimination, bias and unequal status of women in all walks of life and thus makes significant efforts to reach out to the community of women and girls outside the privileged environs of the college as well as addresses the problems of girls and other women workers within the college.

“SriVidya” : Apart from these societies, “SriVidya” – an initiative of the College to adopt a rural school under DBT Star College Status has been formed. In this regard, an Open House for Govt.Senior Secondary School, Khanpur Kalan, Sonepat District was coordinated wherein Secondary students from the school visited various laboratories in the Science Departments in September 2016.

Under the “SriVidya”, a two day workshop on Advanced Science and Mathematics was organized. 3 Senior Secondary School Students -Vivekananda Vidya Vihar, MARAL, Madhya Pradesh, Graphite School, Mandideep, Madhya Pradesh; Vivekananda Kendra Vidhyalay,

Best Practice II: Environment Consciousness for a better tomorrow

Environment issues are the major concerns of the present society. The present problems result largely from ignorance and different trend of continued misuse of the environment. However the situation can be altered by creating awareness among people of how man‟s activities effect the environment for good or ill. SVC is aware that, it is our social responsibility to take into account environmental issues as we try to maintain a balance between economic development and environmental preservation. The College as a whole has worked to increase awareness of environmental issues within employees and society. The great need of today is knowledgeable citizens who are conscious of their surrounding and willing to take necessary, social, economic and political steps to assure a better environment for the citizens of future.

The College has taken two major initiatives with regard to addressing this issue this year

A) Green School Initiative (August 2016-January 2017)

Sri Venkateswara College well recognizes the relevance of addressing key environmental issues such as Pollution, Green Technology, sustainability in benefiting the society at large. Under the DBT Star Status and DST , the Green School Initiative ( GSI) intended to engage and involve school students in activities that made learning about environment more fun and creative. We have caught them young and have created awareness around 4000 students of 13 public and government schools in different parts of Delhi about the adverse effect of pollution. Our sensitization program was student friendly and was designed in a way that it was a joyful learning experience. Interactive sessions with visuals, engaging movie by Mr. Mike Pandey, Quiz competition, Poster making creating Best out of Waste generated students interests as well as sensitized them towards these pertinent issues. The program has garnered a lot of appreciation from students, teachers as well as parents. It has been an amazing journey spanning across five months with keen and enthusiastic participation from different schools. The journey culminated in a meaningful end on 6th of January wherein Quiz winners of all the participating schools competed in the Inter School Quiz Competition. Students also displayed their photographic skills and an exhibition of all their photographs capturing the beauty and plight of nature in “Rendevouz with Nature”. The young Innovative environmentalist Award aimed at promoting

AQAR , Sri Venkateswara College 2016-2017 Page 42 and nurturing young minds and giving wings to their ideas. The GSI is one of its kind efforts that has given altogether new dimensions to environmental issues by involving school children.

B) International Conference on Environment & Ecology: Sustainability & Challenges (ENCON 2017) from Jan 4-6, 2017 in association with AIIMS and UNIC. This conference aimed to provide a platform for researchers and stakeholders working in the area of ecology of humans, other animals, plants and microbes as well as environmental factors affecting them at local and global levels. The conference covered invited lectures by eminent scientists in the field of biodiversity, bio-resources management, chemical and molecular ecology, human health and environment as well as oral and poster sessions from participants. Strengths

The college is situated in Dhaula Kuan adjacent to the South Campus of the University of Delhi. With the metro service under construction, it is considered to be well connected and easily accessible to students from different parts of New Delhi. SVC boasts of a green campus that is environment sensitive. From time to time it has undertaken several green projects like assessing carbon-footprints, vermicomposting, rain water harvesting etc. The campus has hostel facilities for both men and women candidates. Most hostel mates comment that life spent at the SVC hostels is a fun-filled learning experience that prepares them for the bigger events of life. The college lobby has an aesthetic appeal with the unique art form of Cheryl Paintings adorning the lobby walls. In doing so the college is trying to revive an age-old art form that is on the verge of extinction. SVC owes the distinction of being a cosmopolitan college that comprises of students and faculty from different regions of the country. One of its primary ideals has been the recognition of the significance of diversity in all its endeavors academic and non- academic. The college is a coeducational college and is gender sensitive. Like most of its ideals, it believes in an integrated and not a segregated approach to education. It promotes a yin- yang philosophy that believes in the complementarity among opposite sexes. SVC is multi-disciplinary in its orientation. It encourages the coexistence of the sciences, the humanities, the liberal arts and commerce. Each of these streams is flourishing and attracts a large number of students from all over the country. Academic environment at SVC is a lively and vibrant one. It doesn‟t confine itself to traditional methods of teaching where teaching used to be a monologue between the teacher and the student. On the contrary the college is constantly innovating with new teaching strategies like class room discussions, demonstrations, live plays etc. SVC represents a total way of life. Its music, dance and debating societies have achieved widespread acclaim in New Delhi and its adjoining areas. In fact its cultural festival NEXUS stands out as an event par excellence. In keeping with its multi-disciplinary approach, the college encourages talks and seminars that are interdisciplinary in nature. We have had a series of talks that attempt cross- disciplinary comparisons so that faculty and the students have a broader perception of issues of significance. The college believes in transcending the hierarchical boundaries between teacher and student. It by means of several programs facilitates smooth interaction among the two.

Often departmental meetings are conducted where student representatives are asked to participate and voice their opinions. Sri Venkateswara College, adheres to the norms of the University of Delhi in conducting timely internal evaluations and assessments. In addition to it, student feedbacks are also taken. In assessing its own performance, SVC takes care to meet the triangulation of perspectives by involving all affected groups. It also has several monitoring agencies like the ASC that evaluate the overall academic performance of the college. SVC has a well reputed placement cell that provides students with ample opportunities to try out job options that they are best at. The college also excels in sports. Several of its students have received national as well as international laurels for their performances. In addition to it, the college field is utilized to impart cricket coaching to youngsters and often reputed cricketers are pooled in to impart training. The faculty of this college is deemed to be among the best just as the students are considered to be among the best. Both faculty and students along with the cherished ideals of this college are supposed to be the greatest strengths of SVC.

Weaknesses

With an increase in the intake of students on account of OBC, unfortunately infrastructural facilities have not been able to keep pace. This is on account of procedural delays in obtaining permissions from several local authorities makes it an all the more tedious affair to go ahead with infrastructural development. This also includes the urgent need for increased hostel facilities for the students. Recruitment of more number of permanent teachers is a universal problem that most colleges are grappling with and Sri Venkateswara College is no exception. The college acknowledges that the recruitment process has slowed down over the years for a wide variety of reasons and that has had a telling effect on the college environment. College has a sizeable proportion of students who need different kinds of academic help very different from the majority. This comprises of students who follow a different medium other than English and also a category that are slow learners. The college is yet to devise a proper method by means of which these students can be brought at par with the mainstream.

Opportunities

SVC has a vibrant alumni association that needs to be tapped. Interaction with the alumni should be enhanced in order to ensure both financial as well as social support. Social networks should also be established with industry as well as governmental agencies to facilitate better integration among all sectors. Students as well as faculty will then stand to benefit from such associations. Consultancy services and other such facilities should be used to generate more funds for the college which could then be used for the furtherance of the developmental activities of the college.

The college could also look at the possibility of having a full-fledged vocational training center that could impart vocational training like carpentry, masonry, computer skills, mobile repairing, sewing, cooking, fashion designing and the like to interested students. Challenges

The most glaring challenge that the college faces is how to strike an effective balance between teaching and research. While the college recognizes that undergraduate course curriculum is a teaching intensive one, the model of education now being followed wants an equally vigorous research environment. Integrating teaching and research is a herculean task which the college is confronting today. To develop infrastructural facilities is a challenge that the college is trying to accommodate to the best of its ability – given the fact that negotiating with bureaucratic hurdles in this regard is no mean task.
