ANNUAL REPORT – 2019-20

ABOUT

Sri Venkateswara College was established by T.T. Devasthanams in 1961 and acknowledged as one of the prestigious co-educational colleges in University of . The college has been conferred upon the coveted STAR STATUS College by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of . The College offers an array of undergraduate programmes in basic and applied sciences, humanities and commerce. We at Sri Venkateswara College believe in imparting education that is an amalgamation of strong academic foundation and moral values. The college imparts value based education to students through innovative pedagogy and state-of-art research facilities. The College provides the right ecosystem for holistic personality development of students and promote and motivate them to excel in diverse fields such as visual and performing arts, sports and entrepreneurship. Sri Venkateswara College today has nearly 211 dedicated teaching and more than 100 non-teaching staff members and around 3500 students on its roll. We also offer 10 post-graduate courses, one year PG Diploma course in Molecular and Biochemical Technology.

To promote skill development & curriculum enrichment for students the following certificate programs were introduced in 2019-2020 session. Add on certificate courses in IPR, Ayur Biology , Entrepreneurship and Climate Change and foreign languages like German, French and Spanish were offered to the students in the odd semester ( July to Nov 2019) .

NIRF RANK/EDUCATION WORLD RANKING

I am pleased to inform that Sri Venkateswara College has ranked 14th in the National NIRF Rankings of MHRD announced on 11th June 2020 and has been ranked 6th in the Educational World Rankings under the non-autonomous college category for the year 2020.

S TUDENT ADMISSIONS

The academic year started with the admission process for the under graduate Honours courses and PG courses. The Convener, Dr. N. Latha and members of the Central Admission Committee and Teachers-in-charge of respective Departments with the cooperation of Non-teaching Staff have efficiently conducted the admission process and nearly 1355 students for undergraduate courses and 160 for PG courses were admitted for the academic session 2019-20.

SPORTS ACHIEVEMENTS

Our students have actively participated and won several accolades at various international/national/state/intervarsity/inter-college level tournaments and competitions. A few of them are: CRICKET

 Vinayak Gupta, a left hand batsman, was selected to be a part of 25 probable all over India in the U-23 National Cricket Academy Camp held in Bangalore in May 2019 and was one amongst those who presented Delhi U-23 team in the Men‟s One Day League and Knockout in 2019-20. He got a chance to represent U-23 Indian Cricket Team in the emerging teams in Asia Cup held at Bangladesh in November 2019. He also made it to U-23 Delhi Team in the Col. C.K. Nayudu Trophy during season 2019-20.

 Vaibhav Kandpal, a middle order batsmen and an off spinner, made a debut to Delhi‟s Ranji Trophy team during 2019-20 and later on represented Delhi in U-23 one-day trophy and Col. CK Nayudu Trophy.

 Ayush Badoni, a right hand middle order batsman and an off-spin bowler, represented Delhi U-23 test series and is currently plays in U-23 Delhi State Team for one day and C.K. Nayudu Trophy matches organized by BCCI.

 Hrithik Kanojia, a right hand batsman and right arm medium fast bowler selected to be a part of the National Cricket Academy.

 Aditya Gupta, represented his Nagaland state team at Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy organized by BCCI during March 2019. He played two matches achieving 64 runs as his highest score against Delhi State Team. Aditya has also Delhi State in All India National School Games where he knocked 150 runs and managed to take 7 wickets in 3 matches.

 Rahul Chaudhary, a left arm spinner and a left handed batsman, represented Delhi Cricket Team Under-19 in Cooch Behar Trophy. In season 2019-20, while playing 3 matches for Delhi, he picked up 9 wickets and scroed 100 runs with a highest score of 45 against Punjab. He was also in Standby‟s for Delhi Under-19 Cricket Team.

 Aryan Sharma, a right arm leg spinner and right hand batsmen, has been in the squad of Delhi State Under 23 team at Col. C.K. Nayadu Trophy 2019-20 against Baroda in Baroda.

 Hritik Vasudev, represented the Cricket Team in All India University Cricket Tournament organized by Sports Associate of India. He also represented Delhi State in All India National School Games, India.

 Hrithik Shaukeen, a right hand batsman and right arm offbreak bowler, was named in India‟s squad for the 2019 ACC emerging teams Asia Cup in Bangladesh. He made his list A debut for India, against Nepal, in the emerging teams cup on 14th November, 2019 organized by 2019-20. He played in India Underr-23 series against Bangladesh held at Lucknow in September 2019 organized by BCCI, where he was the highest wicket taker of the series. Hrithik has been the part of zone team where he was the second highest wicket taker in the zone cricket tournament held in Surat, Gujarat. He has represented Delhi State Cricket Team in under 23 days matches and one day matches.

 Aryan Gandral, right hand batsman and a right arm off spinner, represented the college at Delhi University Inter College Cricket Tournament organized at , where he knocked off 53 runs and bagged 5 wickets in the match against Dr.B.R. Ambedkar College.

 Harshit Lokwani, arm medium pacer played State Level Cricket Tournament organized by Government of Rajasthan where he managed to be the highest wicket taker with 17 wickets in all, during the tournament. He was the part of Under 19 Rajasthan state cricket team at Cooch Behar Trophy organized by BCCI in 2019.

 Women Badminton Team members Mahima Dixit, Kosha and Ariana secured 1st Position in Badminton Tournament organized by Symbiosis Law School, Noida in February, 2020

 Men Badminton Team members Virat, Naman and Kshitiz won the Men‟s Singles in the Badminton Tournament organized by Symbiosis Law School, Noida

 Eshaan Duggal, an Indian badminton player, is currently ranked 1 in Delhi Under 19 category. He is three times consecutive state champion during 2019-20. He represented India in the Junior grand prix international series in 2019. He secured a bronze medal in the All India Inter university held in Nanded, Maharashtra in 2019 and a silver medal at all India North Zone Championship. He represented Delhi University in the Khelo India university games, 2020, in Bhubhaneshwar, Odisha.

 Kosha Trivedi, secured a gold medal at BITS Open Sports meet, bronze medal at Gujarat State ranking tournament, a silver medal at Aahvaan” sports fest of Delhi Technological University, Gold Medal in “Sportech” annual sports fest of IIT-Delhi and Silver Medal at SPREE sports festival organized by BITS Goa during 2019.

 Naman Bhargava, won Gold Medal at “Aparajit” a badminton event organized at Symbiosis Institute, Noid during February 2020. He also secured second place in the first ever Delhi Badminton league and was a part of Thunderbirds team in Delhi Badminton League held during January 24-28, 2020.

 Kshitiz Yadav, won a Gold Medal at APRAJIT sports meet in Symboisis, Noida and claimed a silver medal at the same tournament in individual event. He got a bronze medal at 7th Suryaroshini Indo-Nepal Badminton tournament and he represented the college at Inter College Badminton tournament in 2020. He also participated in All India Senior Ranking Badminton Tournabment held at Bareilly, Jodhpur, Jodhpur and Bangalore.

SWIMMING

 Simran, won first position at the Inter College Swimming and Diving Championship organized by the University of Delhi, Delhi.  Kashvvi, Anjali, Ariana, Tejaswani, collectively won 1 Gold, 6 Silver, 7 Bronze Medals in BITS Open Sprots Meet (BOSM) in September 2019.

SHOOTING

 Lakshjeet won Gold Medal (College Team) and Bronze Medal (State) in single trap shooting organized by National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) in February 2020.

 Bhowneesh Mendiratta, won Gold (single), Gold (Team) and Bronze (Mix Team) at the 9th Asian Shotgun Championship held in 2019 at Almaty, Kazakhstan. He represented India at the 14th Asian Shooting Championship organized at Doha, Qatar and bagged a Silver Medal (individual) and Gold Medal (team). He won junior team gold, senior team silver and junior mixed team Gold at the 63rd National Shotgun Shooting Championships in 2019.

His achievements also include an individual Silver at the 2nd Khelo India Youth Games 2019, Pune and mixed team silver at the 3rd Kheo India Youth Games 2019, Pune and mixed team Silver at the 3rd Khelo India youth games 2020, Assam. He claimed an individual junior Gold and Senior Silver at the Haryana State Shooting Championships in the year 2019. He won an individual Silver, Team Gold and Mixed Team Gold at the All India Inter University Shooting Championship in January 2019 at Patiala. He was also winner of Gold Medal in mixed team category and Gold Medal for Team at the All India Inter University Games, organized by the University of Delhi in November 2019 at Delhi.

LAWN TENNIS

 Mallika Ambastha, Pranidhi Rajvanshi represented the college and won a Bronze Medal in Lawn Tennis event of BITS Open Sorts Meet (BOSM) at the Birla Institute of Technology and Sciences, Pilani in September 2019.

FOOTBALL

 The Football team of our college secured first position in Delhi University Inter College Football Tournament Championship organized by Nisha Foundation during July 2019.

KARATE

 Saruby Sharma, in 1st ISKF North India Open Karate Championship, organized by Indo Shotokan Karate-Do Federation in January 2019.

CHESS

Abhinav Chauhan secured 1st position in the Chess Tournament organized by Rajdhani College, University of Delhi, in February 2020 and he also bagged 2nd position in “Wazir” Chess Competition organized by Ramunujan College, University of Delhi in March 2020.

IQAC – Internal Quality Assessment Cell

IQAC held regular meetings and planned for the activities to be conducted in the session 2019-2020. The AQAR report for the year 2018-2019 was submitted to NAAC. IQAC, Sri Venkateswara College organized NAAC sponsored National Seminar on “Quality in Higher Education: Current Priorities and Future Challenges during October 18-19, 2019. The seminar was aimed at being a congregation of education policy makers, leaders and passionate educators at a single platform to discuss various

26 aspects which govern quality in higher education, what measures could be adopted to attain quality and how to make quality education available to one and all. Dr. R.Subrahmanyam, Secretary, Higher Education, MHRD inaugurated the seminar in the august presence of Prof. Surendra Prasad, Former Director, IIT Delhi and Former Chairman, National Board of Accreditation ( NBA) ; Prof N V Varghese, Vice Chancellor, NEUPA and Dr. Meenakshi Gopinath, Former Principal, , University of Delhi. Disaster Management Mock Drill and Training Session in association with NDMA and NSS, College was also organized on Jan 8, 2020.

IQAC, led by Coordinator Dr.N.Latha worked during the COVID-Pandemic in close association with several committees of the College. A handbook (in Hindi & Telugu) on understanding the Coronavirus pandemic and staying protected was published in association with The Hindu and the same has been uploaded in the College website. IQAC developed and carried out an online student feedback to evaluate the online teaching following lockdown. This survey was carried out in April with around 1900 responses. The same was analyzed and the report was forwarded to the University of Delhi.

STUDENTS UNION

The Students‟ Union election was held on 12th September, 2019. The Staff Advisor, Dr. Nirmal Kumar with the cooperation of staff members (teaching and non-teaching) conducted the election with meticulous care.

NEXUS 2019 – Annual Cultural Festival

The Students Union in coordination with Fine Arts Association played a key role in organizing the Nexus 2020, a 3-day Inter college annual cultural festival during February 27-29, 2020. The inter- colleagiate cultural festival was inaugurated by Shri Abhay Rustum Sopori as Chief Guest. There were many intercollege competitions held over 3 days which attracted students from Colleges & Universities from both Delhi and outside. I congratulate the entire Nexus Core Committee for coordinating this mega cultural event in the college.

Economics Association, Commerce Association, Sanskrit, Hindi, Pol. Science, Sociology, English Literary Association, English Debating Society, Hindi Debating Society, Science Association conducted various functions/festivals wherein eminent personalities delivered lectures/presentations etc.

I congratulate all the associations for bringing the newsletters and magazines inculcating the students‟ arts of effective communication and giving words to their thought. I requested them to make it available on line to the extent possible. I congratulate present and past convenors for making this possible. VISTAAR (Sri Venkateswara Initiatives in Science Training in Academics and Research) by all Science Departments

Under the Biotechnology Popularization Program , DBT granted funding to organize VISTAAR ( Sri Venkateswara Initiatives in Science Training in Academics and Research held on Nov 1,2019. All Science Departments jointly organized the event to showcase the future of science as an organic blend of different disciplines that consolidate, support and create a technology platform from where applications extend for benefit and use in society. The specific objectives were a) to provide school students with hands-on exposure and portray science as a „fun‟ activity; one that provides an outlet for their creative and innovative expressions. b) To reinforce the concepts being taught in schools/colleges and connect these basic concepts to events observed in daily life. c) to address current global issues relevant to the survival of humankind in future and sensitize them to their roles as future responsible scientists and citizens.

Department of Biochemistry

The Biochemistry Department conducted “Alumni Interaction (Career Counselling) on 30th September, 2019 and Dr. Pragyan Acharya, & Dr. Atul Vashist, Department of Biochemistry and Dr. Prabhu Mishra, Stem-Genn. Therapeutics, , alumni of the college interacted with the students of Biochemistry.

On 1st November, 2019, as part of the VISTAAR exhibition, Forensics stall was erected. The department also conducted Mind Spar 2.0 “Meeting New Challenges” in collaboration with Regional Centre for Biotechnology and GRI, India during November 4-5, 2019. Dr. Shailja V. Gupta, Scientist H/Senior Advisor, Office of PSA, Government of India delivered an inaugural address and Dr. Aditi Haldar, Director, Global Reporting Initiative, South Asia, Dr.Deepika Bhaskar, Registrar, Regional Centre for Biotechnology, Ms. Suman Gupta, Chief Operations Officer, BSC Bio-NEST Incubator delivered lectures for the benefit of the participants, As part of the event, “Seeds of Hope” an exhibition on visions of Sustainability, Steps towards change – a joint initiative of Sokka Gakkai International and Earth Charter organized on 4th November, 2019 by Ms. Heena Jethanandani.

The Department conducted its festival during November 4-5, 2019. MindSpar Ideathon – An SVC_Ideathon competition showcasing critical thinking, innovation and creativity of undergraduate, postgraduate and high school students in Delhi-NCR region was conducted on this eve.

The Amalgam, an inter college mixed bag quiz event, was held on March 3, 2020 as part of National Science Day celebrations.

Department of Sociology:

The Department of Sociology organized its annual lecture on 27th August, 2019 by Professor Mohammad Talib, Centre for Islamic Studies and Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology, University of Oxford. The topic of the lecture was “ Others versus Self-Directed Learning of Sociology Predicaments and Prospects”.

The department also conducted two special guest lectures – (i) Food for Thought : An overview of Food in India as an embedded practice” by Dr. Kiranmayi Bhushi, Associate Professor, School of Social Sciences, IGNOU, on 30th September, 2019; (ii) „Transformative Harmony and Human Development” by Professor Ananta K. Giri, Professor, Madras Institute of Development Studies, Chennai, on 31.10.2019.

The Department of Sociology conducted its annual festival on 29th January, 2020 and on this occasion conduct various competitions like photography, slam poetry, debate and presented prizes to students.

The department came up with two editions of the wall magazine this academic session. The theme of the first wall magazine was Food and Culinary and it was titled 'Salt and Weber'. We tried linking the food and culinary habits to the social phenomena present around us, and how elements such as religion, region, gender, caste, class, and mass media have an influence over our food practices.

The second edition revolved around the theme of Cinema. Titled 'Oh My Goffman!, this edition highlighted the main themes prevalent in the Bollywood industry through the ages and their sociological relevance. It showcased the cinematic depiction of phenomenona like class, woman protagonist, close resemblance to religious epics and the like.

Department of Mathematics

The Department arranged a guest lecture on “ An insight into application of Mathematics” by Prof. S.M. Hedge, NITK. Suratkal, on 11th February, 2020. The Department conducted its annual festival “ Exponent – 20” on 17th February, 2020. Prof. Geetha Venkataraman, Ambedkar University was the chief guest. The department conducted various competitions on the eve of the festival. Prior to this the department was also conducted SCUDEM competition organized by SIMTODE on 9th November, 2019 and certificates were distribution to the winning teams.

Department of Physics

The departmental association “Principia” conducted its annual festival on 2nd March, 2020. In this connection he association conducted various activities - Sci-tales had planned and executed by physics society in which participants came up with so many creative and amazing stories related to the science and the time frame were very limited given to them. The department also actively participated in VISTAR on 1st November, 2019 and making it a great successful event by putted collaborative efforts together by all the science departments. It was basically a science popularization program, exclusively for school students to promote scientific curiosity and temperament. The department organized a talk on “Introduction to computational imaging” by Dr.Kedar B. Khare, Department of Physics, IIT, New Delhi, on 27.09.2019.

Students of the department not only participated in department activities and events but also they effectively contribute in other societies according to their interests and passion through NSS, Astitva (devoted to women), Pahal (oriented to conduct a survey on the drop out ratio in the slum) and Petrichor Society etc. Our students namely Sejal, Shriya, Aditi, Surbhi Bajaj, Divyanshu, Prerna, Kamalpreet, Priyansh, Ishita and Vaishnav are engaged in these societies and doing their assigned work with full devotion. The department conducted an educational tour to Inter University Accelerator Centre (IUCA), New Delhi on 28th February, 2020.

The department of Electronics, started its activities with Alumni Interaction with Mr. Ajeesh Sehdevan (2008 batch) on 19th August, 2019. The department conducted a two day workshop on “ Data Sciences” by Innovians Technologies in association with TECHNEX 2020, Indian Institute of Technology (BHU), Varanasi on 18th and 19th September, 2019. An interactive session on Life Skills “ Problem Solving Effective Communication and Coping with Stress” by Ms. Nandita Prakash, Vice President, Privaste Schools and Children Welfare Association on 22nd October, 2019. On 1st November, 2019, as part of the VISTAAR, the department conducted Robowars Competition Organized for Scholl Students and also actively participated on Do It Yourself (DIY), Lab & Green Technology Stall. The Department of Electronics conducted a 2-day workshop on “Artificial Intelligence” by Innovians Technologies in associate with TECHNEX‟20, IIT (BHU) during 17th & 18th February, 202 and also organized Science Association Festival on 3rd March, 2020. During the Science Association festival on 3rd March, the department released its annual magazine “Aanvik”.

The Electronics department organised a lecture during the Science Association Festival by Dr. Anand Swaroop, Senior Investigator and Chief Neurobiology, Neurodegeneration and Repair Laboraoty at National Eye Institute, National Institutes of Health, Maryland, USA on 3rd March, 2020 for the benefit of staff and students.

Department of Zoology

The Department of Zoology, during the year, conducted 5 field visits/study trips – (i) Sanjay Van Biodiversity Park on 22.2.2020 & 26.02.2020 (ii) Visit to National Institute of Malaria Research (NIMR) on 20.09.2019; (iii) Visit to Rajaji National Park on November 2-3, 2019; (iv) visit to Tungnath/Kedarnath Wildlift Sanctuary, Uttarkhand, (v) Visit to Sulabh International on 13.2.2020. The department of conducted internship training under SRI-VIPRA in the months of June/July, 2019.

The department participated in VISTAAR on 1st November, 2019. The Department of Zoology was actively participated in successfully conducting an international workshop on “Air Pollution and Public Health Challenges and Interventions” in association with Centre for Science & Technology of the Non- Aligned and Other Developing Countries (NAM S&T) during February 5-7, 2020. The department conducted INSA Delhi Local Chapter Programme for celebrating science week on the Theme – Computational Biology for (Meta) Genomics Analysis” during February 24-26, 2020.

The departmental association celebrated its annual festival “ Evolvere” on 9th September, 2019. Dr. Jasminder Sahi, Senior Director, Department of Translational Medicine and Exploratory Development, Sanofi R&D, China delivered a talk on “Research and Development in the Pharmaceutical industry. Dr. Sheetal Gandotra, Senior Scientists,CSIR IGIB,New Delhi, delivered a talk on “ Bugs, Drugs and the Host. The association also participated in the Science Fest – 20 on 3rd March, 2020. On this occasion a lecture “ Genesis of a sensory neuron for vision from basic research to treatment of blinding retinal degeneration” by Dr. Anand Swaroop, Senior Investigator and Chief Neurobiology, National Institute of Health, Maryland, USA. The association conducted various competitions to the students Viz. Pharmashop it : Eposter competition, Chill Pill : Pharmacy Quiz, Nazariya – on the Spot Nature Photography etc. The department released its magazine “Phoenix” on this occasion.

FINE ARTS ASSOCIATION

Fine Arts Association (FAA) is the parent organization of the 13 Cultural Societies of Sri Venkateswara College (SVC). By supervising as well as managing their activities, they ensure that the functioning of these societies is smooth and effective. Their assistance in conducting ECA TRIALS to get the best of talent from the lot, has contributed vitally in selecting adept students into the institution. The process starts with a preliminary round of selection conducted by the societies, and by intense screening, students are finally selected.

INTRA-COLLEGE EVENTS, a week-long spectacle, are also mobilized by Fine Arts. It organizes various competitions like western dance, folk dance, Indian music, sketching and painting, photography, etc. Apart from this, Fine Arts is wholly responsible for sending students from the college to participate in various outstation competitions held in colleges across India like IIT-Bombay, IIT- Kanpur, BITS Pilani, etc. The charge of making all arrangements rests with them.

The major role of the Fine Arts Association students is organizing NEXUS - The Annual Cultural Festival of Sri Venkateswara College, which is a grand three-day fiesta that attracts a large number of students from different colleges of Delhi University, BITS and IITs across the country.

The festivities range from competitions in the field of Debating, Creative Writing, Dramatics, Music, Dance, Painting, Photography, etc and cultural extravaganzas like Star Performances, Rock Band, Battle of Bands, Choreography, Razzmatazz, to name a few. Through the tireless efforts of some of the most talented and arduous students of Sri Venkateswara College, Fine Arts has been able to bring NEXUS at its zenith and got the team crowned with the title of Best fest Organizing Committee at HT Youth Nexus for two years in a row and was also declared as the Second Best fest of Delhi University by DU BEAT.

Vimarsh – The Hindi Debating Society

Vimarsh, under the Coordinatorship of Dr. Meenakshi Bharat, has been active throughout the session 2019-20, from organizing inter-college competitions to participating and winning prizes in Delhi debating circuit. The Vimarsh organized an Inter-college freshers debate competition on 25th September, 2019 wherein more than 40 debaters from various colleges of Delhi University participated. Judgemet panel for this event included a prominent debator from Delhi debate circuit Mr. Deepak Tenguriya and an alumni and expresident of Vimarsh, Ms. Aanchal Bawa. The Vyakhya, the annual inter college debate competition was held on 27th February,2020, wherein Shri Umesh Chaturvedi, prominent journalist and advisor from All India Radio, Dr. Jitendraveer Kalra of our college were acted as judges. The Vimarsh also conducted Manthan an inter-college debate competition of our society on 5th March, 2020.

Besides, organizing these events, our members participated in more than 50 debate events held in various prominent institutions of Delhi including IIT Delhi, INC Youth Parliament( national event), New Delhi Institute of Management, Dr. Akhileshdas Institute, and several colleges of Delhi Unversity. We managed to secure positions in 12 of these events.

Eco Club

The Eco Club of Sri Venkateswara College is a collective effort of passionate teachers and dedicated students from various courses across disciplines, who share a collective vision and sensitivity towards pressing environmental issues. The club is engaged in conducting several programs and events that address important environmental issues, not only within the college but also outside its premises. Through its activities the eco club conducts several interactive programs that facilitate horizontal as well vertical interaction between school children, environmental NGOs and researchers in the field of environment and ecology. Dr. Vartika Mathur is the Convenor and Dr. Pooja Gokhale Sinha, Dr. Abhishek Chandra, Dr. Robin Suyesh, Dr. Preeti, Dr. Aarti Sehrawat as Members. There are 75 student volunteers in the eco club from various courses. Throughout the academic year, several activities are conducted under the aegis of Eco club with active involvement of teachers and enthusiastic participation from students. The NSS organized a Health Talk on “Chest Problems” by Prof. (Dr.) S.K. Chhabra, a famous Asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Primus Super Specialty Hospital on 21st January, 2020 for the benefit of the college students and staff.

As part of the motto of NSS. "Not me but you" a Blood Donation Camp has been organized on 24th January, 2020 in association with AIIMS, Delhi. On 25th January, 2020, a “Voter‟s Day Pledge” was conducted under the Systematic Voters‟ Education and Electoral Participation Programme (SVEEP)

A talk-cum-workshop on “ DNA Fights Rape” has been conducted on 4th February, 2020. by Ms. Arneeta Vasudeva threw light upon the topic and made the audience aware about the importance and significance of the evidences in the form of DNA. The event was further carried on by the charismatic Rj Nitin who with his kind wisdom made the men in the room aware of their responsibilities towards women . He along with all the male audience took a pledge which illuminated the whole event. The last speaker of the event was one of the magnificent woman Ms. Noopur Jhunjhunwala , she summed up the entire session by her take on the society , the patriarchy , the rights and the wrongs and the duties of us as an enlightened society.

The NSS of the college conducted a “Kavi Sammelan” by Shri Rasik Gupta (President of Rastriya Kavi Sangam, Delhi) and his team, Manoj Mishra, Sarai Mishra, Ashwani Kr. Jha and Manju Shakya on 30th January, 2020. On the eve of Martyr‟s Day, on 30th January, 2020, a talk on “ Ironman-Ironman Triathlon” series of long distance triathlon races organized by the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) was delivered by Major General Vikram Dev Dogra, which was an inspirational to the students‟ current state of life. On 27th January, 2020, the NSS organized a Heritage Walk to Safdarjung Tomb and Lodhi Garden and various activities were conducted during the visit.

Throughout the year the NSS Volunteers were actively participated in various events Viz. Yoga Camp, Swatchh Bharat Internship, Jal Shakti Abhiyan, Plantation Drive, Rally on Save Water Save Life, poster making competitions, Swachta Pakhwada, workshop on Buttrflies : Bio Indicator of the Environment; seminar on climate change, NSS Day Celebrations, Seminar And Free Hemoglobin Check, poster making competition, Nukkad Natak in ONGC on Plastic Ban; Swachta Hi Seva, Ahaan Noor-E-Zondagi, painting competitions, joy of giving, National Unity Day, 6th Rabindranath Tagore Memorial Lecture, Disaster Management Training Session, National Youth Day, Seminar on Anti Drug and Illicit Trafficking, Short Film making competitions, Soch-e-hind, Tambola, Project Pustak etc.

The NSS volunteers initiated some projects – Viz. Project Poshan, Each one Teach One, Pustak Book Bank, Project Astitva, Project Pahal

Considering the ongoing pandemic situation in the country, the NSS has stepped up and contributed towards the awareness to combat this situation. All the volunteers of NSS SVC have been working towards this by preparing guidelines in accordance with the instructions given by the concerned ministries. We've been also engaging in a telephonic conversation with the people of Sanjay Camp (adopted community) in order to make them aware about the current situation in order to prevent the

40 spread of misinformation amongst the people. Total number of NSS Volunteers launched awareness campaign - 111 volunteers. Total number of people made aware by NSS Volunteers- 650-700 people.

Since, NSS SVC couldn't reach out to vulnerable people physically, it is changed its way of approaching and sensitising - major way to do so was through social media platforms, NSS SVC started multiple campaigns to educate, normalise and help different audience on social media platforms. The NSS (i) promoted JANTA CURFEW through a VIRTUAL PLEDGE where nearly 50 volunteers turned up along with few students; (ii) campaigned to promote health and safety included multiple posts to keep audience upto date with all required information on COVID-19; (iii) promoted PM CARES relief fund and asked people to DONATE, we also supported two more organisations collecting donations to help daily wage workers and street animals; (4) activities like Yoga, painting, drawing etc. conducted; (5) clarified all myths around Covid-19 through this campaign; (6) started a campaign #StopViolenceAgainstCoronaWarriors and it was a great success, we also shared the actions that can be taken against who harm (physically or verbally) to any health care worker (7) made a special task force which is calling most of the households in Sanjay camp (the adopted slum) and has been surveying people and what resources they are getting from govt. (8) helped outstation students stuck in Delhi, by providing them all important information and notices.

This year, the Placement Cell strived to get the best of companies to hire students from the college. Various first-time recruiters in the session 2019-20 were McKinsey Knowledge Centre, American International Group (AIG), Rocsearch, Larsen and Toubro Limited (L&T) among others.

In this Session, more than 60 companies offered enriching job profiles to the final year students including, but not limited to Risk Consulting, Audit, Risk Advisory, Deal Advisory, Data Analysis, Taxation, Technology Consulting, Sports Advisory, Content Development and Business Development.

The Fourth Edition of the Internship Fair, organised on 12th February 2020 saw participation of 34organisations. The companies rolled out 250+ offers to the 564 students who participated in the fair with the top recruiters being Indigo Airlines, Ksenia Consultation and Teach for India. The fair also had a speaker session and the event was a great success.

EOC – Equal Opportunity Cell

Equal opportunity cell is a social service society which helps differently abled students of our college and work for their empowerment and emancipation for an egalitarian society.

The Annual Seminar of Equal Opportunity Cell for the year 2019-20 was conducted on 6th November, 2019. The significant topic of the seminar “ Fake news and misinformation and ways to curb it”. Shri Kartikay Harbola, a renowned journalist, present Lok Sabha Secretariat, was the Chief Guest. The annual trip of EOC was conducted on 24th January, 2020. A total no. of 35 students and teachers were taken to Madhavgarh Farm, Aravali. The EOC students experienced various activities – camel ride, tractor ride, mud bath, head massage, bullock cart ride, pottery making, dairy farming, Rajasthani culture and heritage of Haryana, and entertainment showcasing the culture and heritage of Haryana.

The members of EOC participated in Sports, Yoga, singing, poetry, dance, quiz, chess at various intra and inter college festivals of Delhi University and won several prizes.

Women Development Cell

The aim of Women‟s Development Cell is to create awareness among students and society. The Cell has taken various initiatives throughout the year to disseminate gender sensitization through various programmess, partnerships and campaigns:-

WDC attended a workshop with Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Project on 4th June, 2019 where it was helped the members in recognizing how Twitter can be a good medium for free public speaking for women by also using effective hash tags. On the closing ceremony of the above CSR, the WDC invited “Swavalamban” a government organization working for differently abled and providing them a unique IDs to bring them to the mainstream and they interacted with the equal opportunity and

42 accessibility was a great learning opportunity. The WDC arranged a talk by Dr. Vinita Chandra and Dr. Mukul Manglik on 7th August, 2019 on issues related to sexual harassment, gender justice and the Internal Complaints Committee.

The WDC got an opportunity to take part in Josh Talk of Girl Up India on 11th October, 2019 where in Padma Shri Awardee Sunil Dabas (Indian Female Kabaddi Coach), Dr. N. Ratnashree (Space Researcher and Scientist), Sunil Jaglan (Social worker and Founder of Selfie With Daughter campaign), Rhea Singhal (CEO of Ecoware), Neetu Singh (Social Activist and Teacher) were panellists and It was a thoroughly motivating talk to the students WDC. The WDC organized a discussion on Legal Prospects of Women Harassment by Dr. Rina Ramdev on 31st October 2019 and she delivered a talk on NALSA judgment on which many lawyers and activists worked together. On 7th November 2019, an open lecture by Dr. Suniti Madaan on the history of patriarchy took place in a talk organized by WDC. The lecture was followed by an interactive session with Dr. Rina Ramdev and Dr. Suniti Madaan on patriarchy.

The WDC organized activities relating to gender equality with certain invited speakers.

The WDC arranged a film screening of “Anarkali of Aarah” directed by Avinash Das on 26th September 2019. The movie, based on a true story, dealt with a person in position of power who harasses a lady who performs on stage and an after-movie discussion took place where power dynamics, hierarchies, issues of male gaze and objectification, patriarchal control and consent were discussed. Prior to this, the WDC invited Ms. Swati Chakraborty (AAC and Assistive Technology Specialist and Researcher) to screen a film written by her on Gender and disability. The film explored various angels of Den, who is specially abled, such as education, relationships, profession and inclusion. In another film screening by WDC, Professor Ronie Parciack from University of Tel Aviv, Israel once again visited our college to present the movie Bar Bahaar directed by Maysaoun Hamoud. The screening took place on 12th February 2020 on the theme Sorority and Sisterhood. Prof. Parciack took many questions after the movie and discussed about patriarchy and feminist solidarity. She acquainted us with the culture of Israel and how the movie portrayed it.

The WDC participated in Hindu College festival - Pride, wherein open mic, dancing, singing, face painting etc. were conducted.

ENACTUS

Enactus, one of the most active societies of the college, was initiated in the academic year 2015-16. The aim of Enactus is to inculcate the spirit of entrepreneurship among students and make them sensitive towards society. Enactus believe in finding opportunities, transforming them into real, sustainable projects so as to empower the underprivileged sections of the society – all this while enactus create a pool of socially responsible students who are well equipped to handle the future.

At present SVC Enactus has over 70 members working on 2 different projects under 4 different departments. Each project has a total 20 student volunteers working under them.

(i) The Crimson Project : the project involves providing reusable sanitary pads, at minimal or no costs to women so as to ensure healthy, hygienic and sustainable menstrual practices along with the aim of reducing the use of disposable sanitary pads which pose a serious

threat to the environment. These pads are manufactured by women looking for employment and hence providing them financial independence. Enactus conducted 9 awareness distribution session in collaboration with various NGOs‟ The Enactus so far distributed over 2000 pads to over 660 women in localities – Malviya Nagar, Munirka, Vasant Vihar, Ashok Nagar, Okhla Vihar, Rangpuri Pahri Village, East Delhi Vinod Nagar.

This project won 2nd position in a competition called “ Startup Showcase” organised by Maharaja Agarasen Institute of Management Studies. The Enactus also entered partnership with Khwaab Foundation and employed a group of around 20 women providing them with managerial, stitching and technical skills.

Solar Powered Reverse Osmosis Plant is the new project in the pipeline of SVC Enactus. The project aims to provide portable water to the slum dwellers who have no access to clean drinking water. The project is in its development stage and the Enactus look forward to start with the pilot session after the comprehensive market research.

th 17 PEOPLE SPEAK - 2020

Continuing the rich legacy of Sri Venkateswara College as the hub of intellectual discourse, The English Debating Society organised the 17th edition of the prestigious People Speak from 10-13 January, 2020.

This edition of People Speak saw the largest ever participation ever received. We had 250+ participants from all parts of the Country, and from Institutions like IIT Rorkee, RMNLU, IIT Delhi, CBS, St. Stephens, LSR, Hindu College, Hansraj, KMC, Miranda House among others.

The Tournament had 5 preliminary rounds spread over two days in which 44 teams participated against each other, in a format based on their wins and losses. After 5 rounds, 12 teams, and 20 judges finally qualified for the knock-out rounds.

There were 4 knock out rounds, namely Pre-Quarter Finals, Quarter Finals, Semi Finals, and The Grand Finals.

The teams that qualified for the Grand Finals were: CBS-IITD and CVS-MH-SBSM. CBS-IITD was a cross team of two students from College of Business Studies, and one student from IITD. CVS-SBS- MH was a cross team between students (one each) from College Of Vocational Studies, Miranda House, and Shaheed Bhagat Singh College.

In a very closely contested Finals, with a judge Panel of 5 judges; CBS-IITD emerged victorious on a 4- 1 split

Among judges, Srishti (Ramjas) emerged as the Best judge with an average of 9.958. The Second best Judge was Ritwik (CBS) with an average of 9.916. The third best judge was Kanika (Miranda House) with an average of 9.833.

Among Speakers, The Best Speaker was Adhish Majumdar, from IITD.

HOSTEL

The Hostels affairs started with new admissions in first year in July 2019. The Hostels conducted various cultural and sports activities during the year.

The year started with national flag hoisting on the eve of 73rd Independence day celebrations and the hostellers performed various cultural programmes, poetry recitation etc. and actively participated in the kite flying.

The 11th Hostel Foundation Day was celebrated in the midst of Hostel Committee members on 18th August, 2019.

An one hour long session of defence training was conducted in September 2019 by the Network Capital in association with Special Police Union for Women and Children of Delhi Police. During the session the Delhi Police Special team and Network Capital demonstrated self defence tactics, provided with various helplines and apps.

The annual hostel trip was conducted during month of March 2020 and the hostellers visited Manali, Himachal Pradesh.

During the year, all the regular festivals that highlight the cultural and religious diversity of the hostellers were celebrated.

INTERNATIONAL COLLOBORATIONS

 The College signed a joint agreement for cooperation in Bioinformatics with Martin Luther University, Halle-Wittenberg, Germany in February 2019.  The college also entered into MOU for academic & cultural exchange with Nordic Centre, a consortium of 19 universities in Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Denmark and Finland.  The faculty had international collaborations with Austria and Thailand. Dr. N. Latha has collaborated under the DST-Austria cooperation fund in computational biology.  Dr. N. Latha and Dr. Nimisha Sinha are a part of the DST India-Thailand faculty exchange programme.

Dr. N. Latha, Associate Professor, Department of Biochemistry, obtained a research scheme – “DST India-Thailand Faculty Exchange – Computational studies of drug targets towards rational design of antiviral therapeutics for dengue infection (2019) and a total of Rs.3,65,000/- received during the year 2019-20.

Dr.Latha organized NAAC sponsored National Seminar on “Quality in Higher Education: Current Priorities and Future Challenges during October 18-19, 2019. Dr.Nitika organized the departmental event “ Mindspar 2.0 – Meeting New Challenges” an ideathon competition organized by the Department of Biochemistry from 4th – 5th November 2019 and was a resource person in DBT sponsored CTEP Venkateswara Initiatives in Science Training in Academics and Research (VISTAAR) on 1st November, 2019. Dr.Nitika attended a Refresher Court in e-learning & e governance (IDC) at HRDC, Jawaharlal Nehru University during August 19-30, 2019.

Dr.Deepti Sharma, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, awarded a major Research Project “ Development of Thiourea derivatives as antiviral agent for Hepatitis B Virus infection by the DBT for a period of three years. An amount of Rs.26,73,586/- has been released during 2019-20 out of the total grant of Rs.41,28,786/-. She attended an ACS Webinar on ACS Guide for Scholarly Communication Expert Advice for Early Career Researchers on 27th May, 2020. Dr. Mansi Verma, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology, participated in two international conferences - “Strengthening Microbial Ecology Research Network in SouthEast Asia” organized by International Society of Microbial Ecology (ISME) on “Dengue, Zika, West Nile Virus: One vaccine for many targets” at Nepal from 12th-14th February, 2020 and organized by INSCR and Department of Microbiology, MDU during October 11-12, 2019 at Maharshi Dyanand University, Rohtak. She delivered an invited talk on “Dengue, Zika, West Nile Virus : One vaccine for many targets” for the Southeast Asian Regional Symposium on Microbial Ecology (SARSME-2020) held during February 12- 14, 2020 in Pokhra Nepal. Dr,Mansi Verma delivered an oral presentation on “ Dengue, Zika, West Nile Virus : One “Flaviviruses : one vaccine several solutions” in young scientist Forum at International conference on the theme : Current Trends in Microbiology And Microbiome Research : A Global Perspective (Ctm 2019) organized by INSCR and Department of Microbiology, MDU, during October 11-12, 2019 at Maharshi Dyanand University, Rohtak.

She got a letter of appreciation for presenting a talk (Young Scientist Forum) at International conference organized by INSCR and Department of Microbiology, MDU, during October 11-12, 2019 at Maharshi Dyanand University, Rohtak. She also obtained a token of appreciation for invited lecture at an International Conference entitled “Strengthening Microbial Ecology Research Network in South East Asia” organized by International Society of Microbial Ecology (ISME) on “Dengue, Zika, West Nile Virus: One Vaccine for many targets” at Nepal during February 12-14, 2020. She was the moderator of Covid-19 community page on Research Gate (among seven International Moderators).

ADD ON COURSES in the session 2019-20

The College offered Add-on courses for students on contemporary topics. These courses were open to students of other universities and colleges, and were in addition to the routine undergraduate courses. A total of four add-on courses were conducted in this academic year in addition to the ongoing certificate courses in foreign languages like Spanish, German.  Ayurbiology: This course was conducted in odd semester and had 35 participants. Experts came from AIIMS, IGIB, Chaudhary Bramhaprakash Institue of Ayurveda. Participants also went on a field visit to All India Institue of Ayurveda.  Intellectual property rights: The course has been successfully running for a couple of years and was conducted in the even semester. It had 55 participants and Attornies-at-law Mr. Hari Subramanium and Dahlia Sen Oberoi from Sen Oberoi law firm were the resource persons  Enterpreneurship: The course was conducted in even semester and had 36 participants. Experts were invited from DSE, Dept of Commerce, DU, ANDC college, DU. The course also incorporated for the first time online evaluation mode using MOOCs platform

 Climate change: issues, concerns and strategies (Department of Botany and Environmental science): the course was conducted in even semester and had 46 undergraduate as well as post graduate students as participants from different colleges. Experts were invited from JNU, IARI, IP University, DU, Kurukshetra University, DST.

INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT

Smt. Durgabai Deshmukh Deshmukh Block is completed and ready for inauguration. The block is having a state-of-art seminar room, which can accommodate around 400 students. The building is also equipped with ergonomically designed benches for students in the class rooms. The furniture for laboratories is getting augmented and will be completed in a short span of time.

LIBRARY

The college library is a well-stocked library with a collection of more than 1, 45, 891 book titles on different disciplines to cater all educational needs of faculty members, students and staff. The library follows an open access system and maintains Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) to provide easy access to the shelves. The library is well equipped with all facilities and resources (print and electronic) in the formats of books, journals (print and electronic), newspapers, online databases, magazines, atlases, encyclopedias and dictionaries etc. The library is fully computerized, uses the library management software (LMS) Libsys- Lsease web centric software. In addition to the college library, students are also offered the facility of departmental libraries for quick and easy access of books. The entire library is under CCTV surveillance.
