• Narratology and New Historicism in Keong Mas
NARRATOLOGY AND NEW HISTORICISM IN KEONG MAS Retnowati1; Endang Ernawati2 1, 2English Department, Faculty of Humanities, Bina Nusantara University Jln. Kemanggisan Illir III No. 45, Palmerah, Jakarta 11480, Indonesia [email protected]; [email protected] ABSTRACT The goal of this research was to know how the folktale Keong Mas was narrated based on Vladimir Propp’s Narratology (1968). Then the evidence in the story was compared to the historical evidence happening during the reign of the two dynasties in the Kediri Kingdom in the eleventh century using the theory of New Historicism. This research used a qualitative method which was based on library research. Furthermore, the research is to know that the work of literature is not always independent. It can be traced through the historical evidence in the folktale which becomes their clues. It is to inform the readers that a work of literature is actually the imitation, that is the reflection of the society. Keywords: elements of folktale, Propp’s narratology, new historicism, historical events INTRODUCTION Indonesian culture produces many kinds of the folktale. They are variously based on the tribes and the areas where the folktales come from. The characters in folktale would be the mirror of human life in the society (Hendra, 2013). Some of the folktales are now written, and some are translated into foreign languages such as English. The elements of folktale are generally part of the oral tradition of a group, more frequently told than read, passing down from one generation to another, taking on the characteristics of the time and place in which they are told, sometimes taking on the personality of the storyteller, speaking to universal and timeless themes, trying to make sense of our existence, helping humans cope with the world in which they live, or explaining the origin of something, often about the common person and may contain supernatural elements.

NOORDUYN BUJANGGA MANIK'S JOURNEYS THROUGH JAVA: TOPOGRAPHICAL DATA FROM AN OLD SUNDANESE SOURCE One of the precious remnants of Old Sundanese literature is the story of Bujangga Manik as it is told in octosyllabic lines — the metrical form of Old Sundanese narrative poetry — in a palm-leaf MS kept in the Bodleian Library in Oxford since 1627 or 1629 (MS Jav. b. 3 (R), cf. Noorduyn 1968:460, Ricklefs/Voorhoeve 1977:181). The hero of the story is a Hindu-Sundanese hermit, who, though a prince (tohaari) at the court of Pakuan (which was located near present-day Bogor in western Java), preferred to live the life of a man of religion. As a hermit he made two journeys from Pakuan to central and eastern Java and back, the second including a visit to Bali, and after his return lived in various places in the Sundanese area until the end of his life. A considerable part of the text is devoted to a detailed description of the first and the last stretch of the first journey, i.e. from Pakuan to Brëbës and from Kalapa (now: Jakarta) to Pakuan (about 125 lines out of the total of 1641 lines of the incomplete MS), and to the whole of the second journey (about 550 lines).

  • Panji and Inao: Questions of Cultural and Textual History
Panji and Inao: Questions of Cultural and Textual History Stuart Robson* Abstract Rattiya Saleh's 1988 book Panji Thai dalam Perbandingan dengan Cerita-cerita Panji Melayu [The Thai Panji in Comparison with the Malay Panji Stories] presents us with a quantity of fresh information on the subject of the Panji literature and has the great advantage of approaching it from both the Malay and Thai sides. It is obviously a wide field, and difficult to master, so that Rattiya's insights are especially welcome. In particular, the link with Thailand had scarcely been touched upon in the past. Although the Panji stories have been the subject of scholarly interest for a long time, ever since W. H. Rassers's De Pandji-roman [The Panji Romance] of 1922, much subsequent comment was merely derivative, simply because not many examples had been edited, let alone translated or made more generally accessible. The starting point of interest in the Panji stories was, and is, the recognition that they represent a portion of the original creative production of the Javanese in the field of literature. Alongside themes borrowed from other regions, India in particular, this theme is one totally Javanese in inspiration. This assertion needs to be clarified against the background of the cultural history of Java. As has been said several times before, the group of stories which are dubbed "Panji stories" are not historical, but rather epic and romantic in character. However, it should be stated that they may well have links with a historical period, and that the places mentioned existed in specific geographical locations, which served as points of departure for further development and spread of the stories.

  • Mitochondrial DNA and the Y Chromosome Suggest
Kusuma et al. BMC Genomics (2015) 16:191 DOI 10.1186/s12864-015-1394-7 RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access Mitochondrial DNA and the Y chromosome suggest the settlement of Madagascar by Indonesian sea nomad populations Pradiptajati Kusuma1,4, Murray P Cox2, Denis Pierron1, Harilanto Razafindrazaka1, Nicolas Brucato3, Laure Tonasso1, Helena Loa Suryadi4, Thierry Letellier1, Herawati Sudoyo4,5 and François-Xavier Ricaut1* Abstract Background: Linguistic, cultural and genetic characteristics of the Malagasy suggest that both Africans and Island Southeast Asians were involved in the colonization of Madagascar. Populations from the Indonesian archipelago played an especially important role because linguistic evidence suggests that the Malagasy language branches from the Southeast Barito language family of southern Borneo, Indonesia, with the closest language spoken today by the Ma’anyan. To test for a genetic link between Malagasy and these linguistically related Indonesian populations, we studied the Ma’anyan and other Indonesian ethnic groups (including the sea nomad Bajo) that, from their historical and linguistic contexts, may be modern descendants of the populations that helped enact the settlement of Madagascar. Result: A combination of phylogeographic analysis of genetic distances, haplotype comparisons and inference of parental populations by linear optimization, using both maternal and paternal DNA lineages, suggests that Malagasy derive from multiple regional sources in Indonesia, with a focus on eastern Borneo, southern Sulawesi and the Lesser Sunda islands. Conclusion: Settlement may have been mediated by ancient sea nomad movements because the linguistically closest population, Ma’anyan, has only subtle genetic connections to Malagasy, whereas genetic links with other sea nomads are more strongly supported.

The Newsletter | No.58 | Autumn/Winter 2011 4 | The Study Maclaine Pont and the discovery of Bharada’s Hermitage When King Airlangga divided his realm between his two warring sons in 1052, he asked the Buddhist sage, Mpu Bharada, to draw the dividing-line between the Janggala and Panjalu kingdoms in Java. For nearly a millennium, the legends about this remarkable sage and his mysterious hermitage-cemetery at Lĕmah Tulis were handed down from one generation to the next. In 1926, the archaeologist Henri Maclaine Pont claimed to have excavated the hermitage site. But his findings passed into a strange oblivion. Now, after three years of intensive detective work, the present authors have resolved this mystery in Trowulan archaeology and can confirm Maclaine Pont’s remarkable claim.1 Amrit Gomperts, Arnoud Haag and Peter Carey 2. 1. 4. 3. • King Sanjaya and His Successors
KING SANJAYA AND HIS SUCCESSORS W. J. van der Meulen S.J.* In an earlier article* 1 I ventured to identify the Yava country of Sanjaya's charter, with the Jawa-Holing of the Chinese reports, and to locate it in the en virons of the Dieng plateau. This charter opens with the preliminary statement that in 732 the king erected his lingga on a mountain known as ’’the permanent portion,” and then proceeds to give praise to 3iva, Brahma and Visnu and to de pict the marvelous and felicitous^country of Yava. Owned by the spirits and inti mately connected with a famous Sivaite yoga precinct that was covered with sacred tfHha, Yava was located in the Elephant-Enclosure-Country. All the elements of this description are fully applicable to the Dieng and to no other (less famous) center of the Siva cult. Moreover, no other such center is known to have its roots in the eighth century. Such an identification is also supported by the men tion of the name ”Lang-pi-ya” in the Chinese reports ( i .e ., the Lampyar or Prahu peak), from which the king liked to gaze down over the sea, and in a more general way by the evident location of Jawa-Holing along the north coast of Java. 2 I further argued that Sanjaya* s charter testifies to the evolution of the coun try into a kind of local super-power during the eighth century, a conclusion which is in accordance with what can be deduced from the Chinese evidence. 3 The second part of the text makes this even more obvious.
