I have enjoyed the experience of publishing this issue of The

Quar ter ly. The exper ience has been in val uable .

I appreciate the contribution and help I ' ve received from Helen

Lu , physical and moral. Without her assistance this iss ue would not

have been printed.

I am looking foreward to future issues. They should be i nterest-

ing and fun . I hope you will be looking foreward to them with as

much enthusiam as I am.

The Quarterly needs your contributions and assistance in proof-

ing and gathering material , and ideas for features to run . This is your quarter ly . What would you like to see in it? We also need books

to review and queries . We will try to run as many queries as we can .

So please send them to the post office box.

EARNEST BAPTIST CHURCH RECORDS S ubmitted b y J e anne Tabb

These records are from two ledgers of the Earnest Baptist Church near Tipton, Tillman County, Oklahoma. The Church was dissolved in the late 1930s and these ledgers were saved from the fire by Newman Hudson Williams of Alt us, Oklahoma, whose mot her was the last clerk of the church. The last record is missing. The spelling is phonetic, writing is in pencil and very hard to tead. The columns are for names, how and when received, how and when dismissed, remarks. The letters in column 2 are: L - letter, B - Baptism, S - statement. Column 3 dismissal has: L- letter, D - death, E - excluded. Not all names have notations beside them. In the handwriting the letters "L" and "T" are very hard to distinguish. I have combined the ledgers as the same names repeat frequently.

482 Dallas Genealogical Society DOING RESEARCH IN THE BODLEIAN LIBRARY OF OXFORD, ENGLAND

Being a transcript of a talk given to the Dallas Genealogical So~iety at its meeting of September 24, 1981 by Mrs. Kay Gunn.

Mrs. Kay Lee WRAGE GUNN is a private researcher wo rking on the GUNTER family in the South and on the LEE family. She is a member of l'!ichael Staner DAR chapter in Dallas. She gave a copy of her speech and copies of the forms she had to use to get into the Bodleian to the Dallas Public Library Genealogy section.

I would like to thank you for the opportunity to speak with you tonight on my recent experiences at the Bodleian Library at Oxford. have jotted down genealogical information and my impressions of the place in the weeks following my re turn. My reactions are fresh, and I hope will be helpful to any of this group that contemplates research in Oxfo r d. I am not a trained speaker, so much of this talk will be read to you. I hope this isn' t annoying, and that you will bear with me in this respect. There are areas 9f detailing in my talk that make boring listening unless you are highly interested in specific geo - graphic areas of England. I will not linger over these, but have made a tape recording of this talk which I will leave behind sa that any one who might want to recheck specifics can do so .

. The Bodleian Library has over 4, 300, 000 volumes in the three entities of which it is comprised: first the "Old Library" where I did my research, in that section known as Duke Humphries Library : second, the Radcliff "Camera"; and third, the "New Bodleian Building." The three building are now connected by tunnels and a book conveyor the length of the Reading Ro oms and book stacks. Of this complex, only the Divinity School is open to the public. The three buildings are quite close to one another, so that ane could easily mave from the one to the other , if desired.

It must be apparent that in a library of these colossal dimen sions, anything like an accounting of the resources in any given area of interest, genealogical or otherwise, would require a lang-t erm research project in itself. It simply isn' t possible to lay be fore you in any truly comprehensive sense the genealogical resources avail able he re, because the Bodleian itself doesn' t keep an all-inclusive accounting. It simply lists the Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Buck inghamshire data it houses, that is, local records. What can be done is to give you a detailing of what the Bodleian itself calls its gen ealogical data, and add to that gratuitous discoveries that I made along the way which would be of broader interest, and in addition, to tell you as well, other genalogical resources availabe in the City of Oxford, lying outside of the Bodleian itself, because if you vent ure there, you should explore the citywide resources, as well as those of the library itself .

First comes to mind - - local information: the Bodleian is replete with specific genealogical data from Oxfordshire , Berkshire and Buckinghamshire. The Bodleian Library is the diocesan record office for pre-1974 Oxfordshire, and so hou-;es many important manu script reccirds, such as parish registers and Wills, transcripts and indexes of county records from this area in its· present and in its past geographic dimensions. Breaking down these categories into their

The Quarteriy - Decenber 1981 483 components, I will accompany this enumeration with frequenc rerer ences to publications offered by the Oxfordshire Family History Soci ety , hereafter referred to as OFHS and to their primary publication , The Oxfordshire Family Historian, otherwise referred to as OFH. Tf any of these publications are desired, you may contact the Society's membership secretary, Kay Mary Beck, 90 Hockmore Tower, Cowley Center, Oxford, OX4 3YG. For specific publications, order frorn Mr. Tony Insul, 23 Tubbs Close, Kings End Vista, Oxford, who is specifi cally responsible for publications of the OFHS . If you wish greater detail than I give you here myself respecting Oxford,~ refer to the publication entitled "Genealogical Sources Within the , "OFH I No. 1, also to the Oxfordshire Genealogical Section of the apen shelves in the Bodleian Library-Selden Inn, OFR Publication I, 4. The phrase 11 Selden Inn" refers to the South end of the Duke Humphries Library at the Bodleian.

The following short group of resources will concern themselves with materials after 1800~ civil registration, births, marriages and deaths in England and Wales after July of 1837, censuses - 1871, 1861 . and 1851. Of interest to same researchers is they will often take you back befare the inception of civil registration, and even into the 18th Century. The census of 1841, which is also available, is useful, hut

Concerning Oxfordshire, Duke Humphries Reading Room, R.3.540. The Faæily History Societies are very active in this field. Oxford shire has a particularly good collection. Copies are in the Bodleian, in the Oxford Central Library , and at the Oxfordshire Record Office at County Hall, and as well at the Society of Genealogists, 37 Harr ing ton Gardens, London SW 7 4JS, a body which it would be well worth joining if you were able to get to their South Kensington Rooms and unique library. For more details, refer to the publication Oxfordshire Parish Registers Deposited Originals and Transcripts , published in 1979, regularly updated in the OFR.

484 Dallas Genealogical Society Marriages: Bonds by , 1634-1954, by of Oxford, 1618-1856, and by officials of the Peculiars are iri the Bodleian, Section II 6, Diocesan Records in R.7.3/lla. For more detailings, refer to the publication, Marriage Indexes, OFH I, 9. Also in the Bodleian is the microfiche of the Computer File Index compiled by the Mormon Church, which includes literally millions of names and baptisms and marriage registers throughout the whole country, a recently compiled and expanding tool of revolutionary import to genealogists. Refer to the publication The Computer File Index , OFH I, 7.

Wills: When they exist, Wills and their associated records since 1858 have been registered and indexed centrally for England and Wales at Somerset House, Strand and Central, London. However, printed annua! indexes, 1858 through 1928, are now available in the Bodleian. Before 1858, Oxfordshire and Berkshire Wills are likely to be found in one of two places, the great majority will be in one of the collections in the Bodleian. However, Wills of the gentry and wealthier tradesmen probably were proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury. Indexes to PCC Wills prior to 1700 have been published and can be consulted in the Bodleian. A consolidated index, 1750 through 1800, is in the course of publication, A through Ze published to date.

The probate records of Courts of the Bishop and Archdeacon of Oxfordshire, 1516-1857, of the Archdeacon of Berkshire, 15.08-1857, The Peculiars of Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire, 1550 through 1858, are deposited in the Bodleian, and contain most Oxfordshire and Berkshire Wills proved locally.

Let me linger here to the extent of imparting information about the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, otherwise known as the Court of the Archbishop of Canterbury, memtioned proviously, otherwise known as PCC. For those of you not already familiar with this insti tution, it has Superior jurisdiction in all of England, Wales, the Isle of Mann, Channel Islands, and sole jurisdiction where testa- tors had bona notabilia, that is, an estate valued at more than 5 pounds sterling, into a diocese or into peculiars, in the Province of Canterbury, or within two provinces, that is York and Canterbury. The Court of the Archbishop of Canterbury also had jurisdiction over all those with property in England, Wales, the Isle of Mann. the Channel Islands, who had died at sea or overseas. This makes an investigation of PCC Wills so uniquely c ompelling for American genealogist. Testators having died at sea or overseas were disting uished in the calendars by the ent ry 11 Pts." an abbreviation for "Parts Overseas" instead o f the name of the place. During the com monwealth period from 1653 through 1660, this Court had sole testa mentary jurisdiction over all of England and Wales. Since the Reformation, it has been usual for the estates of men of wealth and position to receive Granes of Probate and Letters of Administration in this Court. During vacacies in this Court; ·between 997 and 1590, some ,Wills were proved in the Court' of the Prior Chapter of Chr ist' s Church Canterbury, Kent. - Returning specifically to Oxford once more, the Bishop and had concurrent j urisdiction over all of the county except for the Peculiars. The records of these two Courts are combined. The Court of the Chancellor of the University of Oxford had juris-

The Quarterly - December 1981 485 dition over all matriculated persons with bona notabilia within the precincts of the University. All probate searches in the .City of Oxford and its environs should include the records of this Court. The original recoreds of the Court of the Bishop and Archdeacon of Oxford, the Courts of the Peculiar Parishes of Yander and Dorchester, and the Court of the Manor of Sidford are at the Department of Western Manuscripts, Bodleian Library, Oxford . Those for the Court of the Chancellor of the University of Oxford are at the University Archives, the Bodleian Library, Oxford. For more details on PCC Wills, refer to publication "Series A, No . 14, 1978 - Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints."

Same Berkshire Wills are at the Wiltshire Record Office of Trowbridge. For further details on this area refer to the publication Pre-1858 Probate Records of Oxfordshire and Berkshire Testators, OFH I, 9. The Bodleian, depending on the standing of the family during the interlude being searched offers a wide range of additional pub lished works: The Dictionav of National Biographv, Berk's Peerage and Landed Gentry , the Oxfordshire and Cambridgeshire alumnae, professional and trade directories. For further information, refer to the publication "A Genealogical Bibliography of Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire", published in 1978, and to OFH I,5 . This latter work, a publication of the Oxfordshire Family History Society entitled "The Oxfordshire Family His tory," which has been previously cited to you.

The County Records Office: In most counties, the County Record Office is also the Diocesan Record Office, as it is in Berk shire. But in Oxfordshire there is a separate County Record Office, as has been mentioned, in the County Hall Building in New Road, adjacent to the Central Library. This houses civil, as opposed to ecclesiastical, records, including quarter-sessions records and a vast miscellaneous collection of deeds and other documents. There are excellent indexes to the many collections from Oxfordshire families, es ta tes and solicitors. Ref er to the publication "Genealogical Sources in the Oxfordshire County Record Office," OFH Publication I, 5 . The previously enumerated resources for the Oxford Area are many, hut they do not include others of great interest.

Poll Books: of those entitled to vote in Parliamentary Elec tions; the Hearth Tax of 1665, which listed all Oxfordshire house holds; the protestation returns of 1641, a petition signed by most adult males in the County; pedigrees of arms-bearing gentry submit ted to heralds in the 16th and 17th Centuries, otherwise known as "Visitations"; unpublished material, includes the forms of accounts kept by parish officials; apprentic e bonds; law suits, poor records; the list is endless.

As I was thumbing through copies of a defunct publication , The East Anglian , New Series Volume I, September, 1886, Part 21 , devoted to subjects connected with Counties Suffolk, Cambridge, Essex and Norfolk, a then monthly publication, I came upon the following which I will gratuitously include for its reference to material in the Bodleian: "The Candler Manuscripts. In the Middle third of the 17th Century, when England was convulsed with rival faction, political and religious, the gentlemen of Suffolk, or same of them, at any rate, were busying their studies writing the

486 Dallas Genealogical Society pedigrees of their friends and neighbors, and etc., Cand ler began jotting down the pedigrees of the Kings of England and the old nobility, but he did not stop here. He went on to the great su·ff_olk families, their contemporaries, and gave their descent as he know of them. And then he enter ed his own pedigree; his wife ' s pedigree, his brothers-in-laws and sister- in-laws, and indeed the pedigrees of all of his kindred. By and by he took up with his friends' genealogies, and as many of them were Puritian clergymen like himself, ·he tersely recorded notable passages in their history, and he was honest with it all, and etc., .... but their chief value is the evidence they afford as to the true English ancestry of many an American emigrant in the 17th Century. To the New Englander this particular manuscript, and its fellow in the Bodleian Library at Oxford, occupy a pos it ion not utterly dissimilar to the Herald 1 s Visitations with us. Indeed Candler's information was the more valuab l e in that it affords same times the only clue the American genealogist has to act upon. That Candler gives us what we find nowhere else, the pedigrees of families clerical and landed, just below the Visitation rank, is another testimony to the great and almost unique value of his writing ."

Wonders such as the Candler manuscripts would be, I am sure . a not infrequent find among the Bodleian treasures, given a will to delve for them. After all, the Bodleian is privy to every published book in the United Kingdon, and God in His wisdon only knows the full extent of their resources laid end to end . Such as the Candler Manuscripts would not be listed by the Bodleian as part of their specifically genealogical data. Nevertheless, they, and many another are there.

I would like to mave from the specificities of the foregoing data to a much more generalized glimpse at the Bodleian from my personal point of view . Starting at the tap, let me recommend that you stay at the Randloph Hotel in Oxford if you plan Bodleian research, because of its proximity to the library. From the Randolph to the heart of the University area, a walk by aur measure is only three or four blocks. However, do not make the mistake of asking directions in blocks, or you will probably get only a blank stare. City distances are not taken in blocks in England, hut usually by reference to well-known landmarks, and b y the latter method you might be directed from St . Giles Stree t at the hotel, South to George Street , turn East on Broad Street until you reach the Sheldonian Theatre. At the Sheldonian if you can resist the temptation to enter this beautiful theater, you simply skirt th e East side of the building, walking past it to the entrance of the Bodleian Quadrangle. This is the old library area, and th e home of the bulk of the antique genealogical data in the repository. This rauting will also take you past the woril:.d-famous Blackwell Book Store, where an hour will be wellspent in examining their county and city histories and map sections. This would also gi ve you a good lo ok at the denizens of the surrounding university - - dons, graduate and under-graduate students who will be mill ing around in Blackwell' s and the neighboring shops that serve the colleges which comprise Oxford University. This gets you to the Library physicall y , hut it takes considerably more effort to get you into the Library with access to its use.

The Quarteriy - Decerri>er 1981 487 The first step in -the entry process is to make contact with a certified, or at least a well-known, genealogist in England w~o can vouch to you with the Library at the Bodleian. This definition might be broadened to include well-know "antiquarian," or other person of sufficient stature of recognition to establish your identity as a serious reader. To initiate this pro cess, you write the Librarian, Bodleian Library, Department of Western Manuscripts, Oxford, England~ OX I 3BG requesting a recommendation form, and enclosing an envelope addressed to yourself with money for airmail postage. In the course of time when this requested forn is sent to you, you are to sign it with your customary signature, preferably that same appearing on your passport, and forward it to your recommender. He or she fills out the form in his own hand, and forwards it to the Librarian for ::1 pprov al. To facilitate the process, supply the recommender with an envelope addressed to the Bodleian Librarian and a similar one for the Librarian addressed to yourself, sa that the approved form can be returned to you.

This rather involved exchange take time to accomplish, and you should allow two to three months for the process. I would think that the recommender should be an Englishman, if you hope to accomplish your end, as the Librarian has got to be able to recognize without much effort the party in question. In any event, an English man as recommender would doubtless be preferred. I can make no recommendation to you about the person or genealogical concern from whom to get a letter of recommendation, as this implies a relation ship of same standing . Any English genealogist willing to recommend you will of course have to have had correspondence or contact with you to an extent that warrants the request.

For the sake of brevity, let' s as surne that the forego ing has been accomplished, and that you have your recommendation form in order, and have arrived in Oxford ready to research. The next step in the chain of entry is to bring the completed form to the Old Library in the Bodleian, to the entrance marked "Scala Musica" on the South End of the Bodleian Quad during library hours, Monday through Friday, 9:30 to 12:30 in the morning, 2:00 through 4:30 in the afternoon, or on Saturdays, 9: 30 to 12: 30 in the morning. The Bodleian is closed on Sundays, Good Friday, Easter Eve, and Easter Monday, the week of the late summer bank holiday, weekdays preceding Christmas Day, December 25th through January lst, with the except::ion of the Radcliff Science Library on the day of the Incania, which is the first Wednesday in the University's lang vacation.

Alongside the completed form, be sure to take your passpoet or your driver' s license, which are the simplest of several possible secondary identifications that are requested, an y of which must bear either your signature or your photograph, or both. The actual entry crocess takes approximately thirty minutes, sa be prepared to fume a little. The don admitting you may well be late in umlocking the Admittance Office, or you may be precede in line by a number of readers. In any event - - be prepared to fume a little. The process of admittance is irritating in itself, as I experienced it. The gowned don who recieved me took his sweet time in examing all my credentials, and was visibly disappointed that he could find nothing w1rnng with them. He was a man eager to exercise his authoriy nega tively, as his subsequent comments proved. I had prepared myself

488 Dallas Genealogical Society to face a bit of vanity and a pinch of arrogance in this sanctum sanctorum of scholarship; but I had not prepared myself to face a covert skirt:1.ish of wits as part of the initiation process. After he had r e luc t an l y approved my credentials and accepted my forms, I asked "Would it i>e all right with you if I took home one of these blank admission forms? I think there might be friends of mine in Dallas who would want to make application." His true feelings became unequivocal at this point as he answered me "Yes, you may take a form, but we real ly don' t want people from Dallas, or from anywhere in the States coming over here to use the Library. They would probably try to send a recommendation from the Sheriff of Dallas, or some thing like that ! 11 Clearly he was looking for an excuse for his com- . ment. It took my utmost self-control to keep from reminding him that it had been the Rockefeller Foundation that had supplied the bulk of the million pound cost of the new Bodleian Building in 1940, that Americans should be welcomed here with apen arms, instead of subjected to indignities. But I bit my tongue---after all, I hadn't come all this way to be chucked out the door, so I fed him mock innocence, " Yes, I feel sure you have to keep your guard up against things like that ! 11 In those last seconds my droll tone must have betrayed me a bit, because he cut his eyes in an agitated way . I hadn 1 t given him cause to r e fuse me ent ry, but he began to suspect a double entendre in my remard, that I had momentarily played him fora fool . He wasn 't used to challenge, and he didn't know quite what to do about it.

I was required to read the Library 1 s lengthy rules silentl y in the don 1 s presence, and to read aloud the customa r y oath, which includes a commitment not to steal, vandalize or set fire to the Library, among other enjoyments. By itself, the reading of the rules and oathtaking are unworthy of added comment, but the don ' s insinu ating and provocatice attitude most definitely are! At the end of the declarant oath, I looked up ful l into his eyes, and with the blandest expression at my command added an irnprovised addition of my own "Amen!" One last time he looked at me with a raking glance, not sure whether I was exp r essing colonial innocence and stupidity, or controlled sarcasm. I never gave him the satisfaction of knowing which, but signed my admittance card in silence and took my leave of that nasty man!

Certinly not all my contact at the Bodleian had this unpleasant tone, but there is a free floating paranoia in the place, possibly warranted, that one is perhaps an incipient arsonist, a possible vandal or thief. You will simply have to take this as part ar.d parcel of the whole experience, and try to keep it in the perspective of the colossal resources available to you. Expect your carrying case, satchel or purse oo be searched on entering and leaving the Library at each visit, and the heavy gaze of the Librar y staff on your back as you work. I found this not unbearable, but a ch ronic nuisance .

Up the circular stairway that leads to Duke Humphries Library, at the top of the Old Library Building, through the portals marked "Art s End , 11 you can handle the original of most any manuscript in the repository given certain procedural means . The Library prefers you to work from books on the apen shelves, or from microfilmed copies of original records, as you rnight expect --but, on special request

The Quarterly - December 1981 489 will bring up from the archives most any document that you seek. This latter call takes about two hours, so allow for it if you want to handle original data. Allow yourself enough time, as it is going to take time both to locate and to request material, and to go through the rather elaborate processes of gett ing it. A welter of differing forms exist for differing purposes, and each is accompanied by a welter of directives governing its use. Microfilm, mansucripts, hooks not on open shelves, coping processes, all have individual request forms and acquisition proces~es. There is a minimum 24-hour delay for any copied instrument, even be it so simple as Xerox-ed copy. There are no copy machines in the Library, so be prepared to get writer's cramp before you leave the place.

Many of the particulars of my own interest, I requested copied and forwarded to me at home, rather than trying to deal with them during my stay. If your time is limited, you would do well to know precisely what you are after, and something of how to get to it before You get there, some of which will be tended to through correspondence with the Librarian in advance. Towards this end, I have brought you copies of all the forms and directives that came into my hands during that stay. And if I haven' t sea red you to death about this place ..,._ perhaps you ' ll have a look at them. I'll leave the portfolio here for you to keep .

The upper reach of the Library is filled with a race of troglodytes, who rarely see the sun or sniff fresh air. I secretly suspect that some of the Library natives live under the counters, or in the musky cubicles, where you can catch periodic glimpses of them bent in earnest pursuit over some corpus of blotched 15th Century manuscript. They gi ve short shrift to anyone not master of at !east two dead language, and don' t real ly want to be bothered with bumbling outsiders. But despite all these drawbacks, the incredible resources of the place, and the helpful young students who work the desk and will aid you in any way possible, make up for much. In a general sense, these young helpers will do a lot more for you than any erudite scholar of the place.

I hope that this information has been of enough general interest to sustain the evening. Thank you.
