  • The Diary of a Manchu Soldier in Seventeenth-Century China: “My
THE DIARY OF A MANCHU SOLDIER IN SEVENTEENTH-CENTURY CHINA The Manchu conquest of China inaugurated one of the most successful and long-living dynasties in Chinese history: the Qing (1644–1911). The wars fought by the Manchus to invade China and consolidate the power of the Qing imperial house spanned over many decades through most of the seventeenth century. This book provides the first Western translation of the diary of Dzengmeo, a young Manchu officer, and recounts the events of the War of the Three Feudatories (1673–1682), fought mostly in southwestern China and widely regarded as the most serious internal military challenge faced by the Manchus before the Taiping rebellion (1851–1864). The author’s participation in the campaign provides the close-up, emotional perspective on what it meant to be in combat, while also providing a rare window into the overall organization of the Qing army, and new data in key areas of military history such as combat, armament, logistics, rank relations, and military culture. The diary represents a fine and rare example of Manchu personal writing, and shows how critical the development of Manchu studies can be for our knowledge of China’s early modern history. Nicola Di Cosmo joined the Institute for Advanced Study, School of Historical Studies, in 2003 as the Luce Foundation Professor in East Asian Studies. He is the author of Ancient China and Its Enemies (Cambridge University Press, 2002) and his research interests are in Mongol and Manchu studies and Sino-Inner Asian relations. ROUTLEDGE STUDIES

Review to Chinese Old Maps and Recent Study Progress* Wang Jun (Chinese Academy of Surveying and Mapping, Beijing, 100039) [email protected] Abstract: Ancient Map is a significant constitution of historical culture treasure, which symbolizes the sovereignty, the national territory and the accumulation of geographical knowledge. The remarkable achievement of Chinese ancient cartography, which aggregated much knowledge and mapping techniques, has been recognized internationally. This paper draws an outline of the history of Chinese cartography, with several sample illustrations, and presents a brief review to the study achievements in this filed, from the approaches of project, scholar, publication, paper and digitalization work recently. Key words: history of cartography, academic review The History of cartography is inter-discipline among the geography, cartography and history of natural science. With reference to other civilizations in the world, the history of Chinese culture and science is long and continent, kept down much for investigating. In several periods, Chinese civilization, including cartography and geography, stood in the front at the ancient time. At the meantime of accumulate of materials and ideology, much maps or plots were produced, recorded, conserve and survive to present, which records the massage of technology of Chinese past surveying and mapping. These past map, are worthwhile for research with the view of history of cartography, and draw the world attention. According to the mapping methods and way of conservation, the catalogues of past maps are formal or official map, commercial published map and draft map in achieves. For the reason for the official map, which was believed to represent the status of past surveying and mapping, secretly conserved in the palace, or lost in war.

  • The Romance of the Three Kingdoms Podcast. This Is Episode 153. Last
Welcome to the Romance of the Three Kingdoms Podcast. This is episode 153. Last time, after many delays and postponements, the kingdom of Jin finally decided to march South. Its army was cutting through Wu territory like a hot knife through butter, or if you prefer the Chinese equivalent of that saying, like a knife through bamboo. They were knocking on the doorstep of Jianye, the Wu’s capital city, but there was dissent back home about whether to press forward. The senior court official Jia Chong wanted to recall the troops on account of fatigue and disease, but his colleague Zhang Hua (2) spoke against it, prompting Jia Chong to scold Zhang Hua. But Sima Yan was like, if you’re done, Mr. Let’s Recall the Army, I would like to say something, seeing how I’m, you know, emperor and all. “It is my intention to continue,” he said. “Zhang Hua just happens to share my opinion. There is no need to bicker.” And just then, a dispatch arrived from the Jin grand commander Du (4) Yu (4), also urging Sima Yan to continue pressing the troops forward. With all second thoughts erased, Sima Yan promptly gave the order to advance. With that command, the Jin army resumed its course on land and water, and just like before, the people of Wu surrendered at the first sight of their banners. When Sun Hao heard this, he turned pale. “The Northern army draws nearer by the day,” his officials told him. “And our soldiers and people are surrendering without a fight.

The ecological environment in the western region of China is very fragile, and any improper human activity or resource utilization will lead to irrecoverable ecological degradation. Therefore, the integrated ecosystem assessment in the western region of China is of great significance to the Western Development Strategy.

  • Rotten Pedant! the Literary and Historical Afterlife of Qiao Zhou
afterlife of qiao zhou j. michael farmer Rotten Pedant! The Literary and Historical Afterlife of Qiao Zhou n what is surely one of the classic understatements in the history of I .sinology, Winston Yang declared, In China, far more people have read [Luo Guanzhong’s 羅貫中] Elaboration [Sanguo [zhi] yanyi 三國志演義 (Extended Meanings of the Records of the Three States)]1 than Chen Shou’s 陳壽 (233–297) Chron- icle [Sanguo zhi 三國志 (Records of the Three States)], and far more Chinese have gained some knowledge of the history of the Three Kingdoms period from the novel than from the official history.2 Now, Yang’s claim may be said to have gone global, with numerous illustrated books, comics, television series, movies, and video games based on Extended Meanings translated into Asian and Western languages and hotly discussed on worldwide internet forums. The widespread acceptance of Extended Meanings as “history” is problematic but not surprising; the text has long been regarded as a sort of popular history. Jiang Daqi’s 江大器 preface to the earliest extant edition (dated 1494) claimed that the intent of the work was to correct the “contemptible and erroneous language” and “wild fiction” of blind storytellers who narrated Three States 三國 (220–280) history,3 and to 1 The attribution of the text to Luo (ca. 1315/18–ca. 1400) is much later than the earliest edi- tion, and the issue of authorship remains hotly debated. Given the serious doubts about Luo’s purported authorship, it becomes difficult to contextualize authorial motive and otherwise place the composition of the work into a historical setting.

  • China's Political Ecology and the Fight Against Corruption
China’s Political Ecology and the Fight against Corruption Joseph Fewsmith Since the 18th Party Congress convened in November 2012, China has undertaken a wide-ranging campaign against corruption. The campaign has gone on longer, cut deeper, and affected more people than anyone might have imagined two years ago. The course of the campaign has exposed in considerable depth many of the ills of political life in China. Although it seems intended to break up many of the “small circles” that pervade China’s political life, there is no question that the campaign has focused particular attention on the networks around Zhou Yongkang, the former head of China’s security forces, and Ling Jihua, the former head of the General Office. China’s leadership has promised the campaign will continue, so there are likely to be more surprises; perhaps one or more new “tigers” will be exposed. China’s fight against corruption really began with the conviction of Bo Xilai (薄熙来), the former party secretary of Chongqing municipality and an apparent contender for a seat on the party’s powerful Politburo Standing Committee (PBSC). But since Bo’s case was concluded prior to the 18th Party Congress, he is not mentioned in the running tab the People’s Daily website has maintained of ministerial-level cadres who have been taken in for investigation, and he is rarely mentioned in media articles discussing corruption. Perhaps the relative silence surrounding the Bo Xilai case since the 18th Party Congress is intended to minimize the political nature of the current campaign, though the recent arrest of Zhou Yongkang (周永康), the retired former head of the security apparatus, inevitably raises questions about Bo and politics in general.
