Samorian www.BoHoTheatre.com /BoHoTheatre @BoHoTheatre FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR I lived my formative years in a time when mental illness was shrouded in stigma. Common issues like anxiety and depression were a result of exterior stimuli that could be remedied (or at least concealed) with a strong dose of stoicism and avoidance. There was a societal framework that forcibly contained any outliers that showed signs outside the norm. There was fear, misunderstanding, and suppression. For my family, this suppression led to great rifts that still linger decades later. As the years passed, more mentions of therapy and medication began to creep into everyday conversations. There was more awareness of how commonplace mental illness is. And yet, even after seeing the effects of mental illness first hand, I still felt closed-minded. I was judgmental and skeptical. Then I saw the Broadway production of Next to Normal. Watching this family struggle with the very same issues, but in a way that was brutally honest and open, was profoundly moving. This family was not suppressing or avoiding, they were assaulting the issue head-on. To see them rise and fall with every attempt to get back to being normal was so powerful. Moreover, it was exploding an issue that I had learned to evade, asking me to acknowledge and accept it. In looking back, I realize how damaging it was to negate the existence of mental illness. In looking forward, I see the everyday struggles that this illness (in all its varied shapes and colors) brings to my friends, family, and those closest to me. The common thread between then and now being the desire to find normalcy. Of course… that can’t help but to beg the question: “What is normal?” Peter Marston Sullivan Artistic Director, BoHo Theatre BOHO THEATRE presents next to normal Music & Lyrics by Book & Lyrics by TOM KITT BRIAN YORKEY Directed By LINDA FORTUNATO Music Direction By ELLEN K.
