I lived my formative years in a time when mental illness was shrouded in stigma. Common issues like anxiety and depression were a result of exterior stimuli that could be remedied (or at least concealed) with a strong dose of stoicism and avoidance. There was a societal framework that forcibly contained any outliers that showed signs outside the norm. There was fear, misunderstanding, and suppression. For my family, this suppression led to great rifts that still linger decades later.

As the years passed, more mentions of therapy and medication began to creep into everyday conversations. There was more awareness of how commonplace mental illness is. And yet, even after seeing the effects of mental illness first hand, I still felt closed-minded. I was judgmental and skeptical. Then I saw the Broadway production of Next to Normal.

Watching this family struggle with the very same issues, but in a way that was brutally honest and open, was profoundly moving. This family was not suppressing or avoiding, they were assaulting the issue head-on. To see them rise and fall with every attempt to get back to being normal was so powerful. Moreover, it was exploding an issue that I had learned to evade, asking me to acknowledge and accept it.

In looking back, I realize how damaging it was to negate the existence of mental illness. In looking forward, I see the everyday struggles that this illness (in all its varied shapes and colors) brings to my friends, family, and those closest to me. The common thread between then and now being the desire to find normalcy. Of course… that can’t help but to beg the question: “What is normal?”

SPRING 2017

In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets . The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single ma- levolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity’s most basic needs . Amid the people, a hero decides that he’s had enough and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom! Inspired by the works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, Urinetown is an irreverently humorous satire in which no one is safe from scrutiny .

THREE DAYS OF RAIN BY RICHARD GREENBERG

SUMMER 2017

Walker Janeway returns to New York a year after his father’s funeral . He takes up residence in an abandoned loft where, thirty-five years earlier, his architect father and his father’s business partner Theo had designed their greatest house . Joined by his sister, Nan, and Theo’s son, Pip, tempers clash over ownership and the fate of the famous house . Walker has found his father’s old journal, which he thinks contains evidence that Theo stole his father’s ideas . But the truth of the past is much different than the three of them realize .

FALLMarie 2017 Christine

In the twilight years of the 19th century, Marie Christine is a racially mixed woman imprisoned without a trial to face death . From her cell, she recounts her journey from a genteel life of privilege in New Orleans Creole society through love, betrayal, and incomprehensible vengeance, to her final tragic fate . Inspired by the Meade myth, this tale of dark magic and raw emotion is loosely based on the life of real-life voodoo practioner Marie Laveau . GET YOUR 2017 BOHO MEMBERSHIP NOW

Hauptmann Floyd Collins are you here celebrating 10 years of smart art

At Theater Wit We are a theater company within a building, within a community, within a world.

As a production company, Theater Wit’s mission is to be the premier “smart art” by producing humorous, challenging, and intelligent plays that speak with a contemporary theatrical voice.

As an institution, Theater Wit seeks to be the hub of the Chicago neighborhood theater scene. In our three spaces, we bring together Chicago’s best storefront theater companies. Here you will find a smorgasbord of excellent productions, see the work of a parade of talented artists, and mingle with audiences from all over Chicago.

In the Middle of a Community Everyone here: folks in the audience… the person who handed you this program… somewhere on or off the stage there are actors… if you look up in the corner you might get a glimpse of the stage manager in the booth… We’re all in this room for the same reason: to be a part of this shared experience. No matter who they are or where they come from; no matter if they are complete strangers or familiar faces; no matter how different the age, the race, or the walk of life; after this performance, you will have something in common. So, strike up a conversation in the lobby, introduce yourself to someone new. Meet our staff, shake hands with an actor, get a drink from our bar. We’re all in this together. Part of the Chicago Scene Theater is part of the Chicago experience. Each year, over 200 theaters present thousands of shows to Chicago’s loyal and enthusiastic theater-going audience. Chicago’s theater community is recognized around the world for its talent, its innovation and its power to entertain and enlighten. If Tony awards were sports championships, our artists would beat out the combined efforts of Michael Jordan, Bobby Hull, Jim McMahon, Jermaine Dye, and the entire Chicago Cubs roster going back 100 years. This stage is a Chicago stage, contributing to the vibrant artistic life of our city and the economic development of our neighborhood. Very few cities on the planet offer the theatrical richness and diversity of Chicago. But you get to share in it.
