Louis Levi Oakes, Last of the Mohawk Code Talkers, Dies at 94
Louis Levi Oakes, Last of the Mohawk Code Talkers, Dies at 94 By Daniel E. Slotnik June 4, 2019 Louis Levi Oakes, the last of the Mohawk code talkers, who helped American soldiers triumph in the Pacific Theater during World War II, along with code talkers from other tribes, died on May 28 at a care facility near his home on the Akwesasne Mohawk Reservation in Quebec. He was 94. The death was confirmed by his granddaughter Teresa Oakes. The code talkers, a group of several hundred soldiers, used their indigenous languages to create impenetrable ciphers as a way of securely relaying vital information on the battlefield. Most of them were Navajos, more than 400 of whom participated in an extensive Marine Corps program. But code talkers from other tribes, including the Hopi, Comanche and Mohawk, also played a role. Mr. Oakes was one of about 24 from the Mohawk tribe, whose lands are mostly in upstate New York and Canada. David A. Hatch, the National Security Agency’s senior historian, said in an interview on Tuesday that about 30 indigenous languages were used in battle and that about 10, including Mohawk, became the basis for more complicated codes, in which traditional words or phrases became metaphors for matériel. The word for “turtle,” for instance, might be used for tank. Mr. Oakes, who was a technician fourth grade in the Army and served in New Guinea, the Philippines and the South Pacific, never spoke much about his service. “All he ever told us was that they gave him a piece of paper and said, ‘Say this in Mohawk to somebody else on the line,’ and he just did what he was told,” his granddaughter said. -

PINKINS (Under the Direction of Alan Downs) ABSTRACT Red Power activism in the United States and Canada during the 1940s and 1950s is primarily localized, consisting of several tribes or particular regions of tribes simultaneously, but separately protesting local, state, or federal legislation that threatened aspects of their tribal sovereignty. The occupation of Alcatraz Island in 1969 by a group called Indians of All Tribes marked the beginning of pan-Indian activism, inspiring diverse, indigenous efforts to bring about social change. The localism of native activism before the occupation of Alcatraz also extended to intratribal divisions which is illustrated by two separate activist events in the Mohawk communities of Kahnawake and Akwesasne. -

If phoning please feel free to call after hours From 8.00am up until 7.00pm is fine. I have a couple of pieces of bad news. Firstly my dear mum, Rose Reid, passed away on February 23rd. Many knew her as she worked Wednesdays at the old Parramatta store from 1990-2000 and filled in when I went on buying trips. It has been a trying period but I can honestly say she loved her time in the shop especially meeting and talking to many fine people and was a keen music buff, something that has passed on through the genes. Secondly, we lost a dear friend in Norm Pyne. Many who went to the Parramatta store would have seen a blind guy getting round with only a cane. My admiration for Norm was limitless. I never considered him handicapped in any way and he was always thankful for his independence. It is a sad irony of life that it is probably this independence which saw him involved in an horrific accident which cost him his life. -

Recording Copyright Term and the Supply of Music
It was Fifty Years Ago Today: Recording Copyright Term and the Supply of Music Megan MacGarvie, Boston University and NBER John McKeon, Edgeworth Economics, L.L.C. Jeremy Watson, Boston University Preliminary Work in Progress June 2017 This paper examines the effect of the expiry of recording copyright on the supply of music – in the form of re-releases and concert performances – by artists popular in the UK in the 1960s. In a sample of 11,639 tracks by 135 artists first released between 1928 and 1975, we find that the expiry of recording copyright is associated with an approximately 286-327% increase in the number of re-releases, holding constant artist, age and year fixed effects. The effect is not significantly different for the most popular artists in our sample, and is not apparent in placebo regressions on a sample of US re- releases. However, when a track’s original recording copyright expires, it becomes less likely to be performed in concert, particularly by UK-focused artists, after controlling for age, year and artist fixed effects. These results suggest that copyright term extensions may lead to fewer re-releases but more live performances of popular music first recorded approximately fifty years ago. *An early version of this paper using different data was titled “Copyright Extensions and the Availability of Music: Evidence from British Hits of the 1960’s” and was written by John McKeon as part of Boston University’s Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP), under the supervision of Megan MacGarvie. John McKeon would like to thank UROP for funding.
