CHAPTER I 1502-1629 THOUGH it did not take place until fifteen years later, the discovery of St. Helena became inevitable AL when the Portuguese navigator, Bartholomew de Diaz, rounded the Cape of Good Hope in 1487. For many years the Portuguese, the greatest race of sailors who ever ventured into uncharted seas, excluded from the Mediterranean, had gradually explored farther and farther along the mysterious unmapped western coast of Africa. Ten years after the epoch-making discovery of Diaz and after Columbus and Cabot had opened up the Atlantic to the races of the West and North of Europe, the King of Portugal, Emmanuel the Fortunate, sent out a fleet under the command of Vasco da Gama with orders to sail beyond the Cape of Good Hope in search of a direct sea route to India and thus tap the wealth of the East. Hitherto for centuries all trade between Europe and the East had been carried overland across Arabia, and by ship along the Mediterranean, and had been in the hands of the Italian cities of Venice and Genoa. Da Gama achieved his ambition, and arrived at Calicut, on the west coast of the Indian Peninsula, and from that day the Mediterranean, which for centuries had been the centre of civilization, began to decline. The Portuguese lost no time in building forts and setting up trading posts along the west coast of India, but their principal one was at Calicut. I 5 021 ST. HELENA ST. NMRN Master Narrative Ours is the epic story of the Royal Navy, its impact on Britain and the world from its origins in 625 A.D. to the present day. We will tell this emotionally-coloured and nuanced story, one of triumph and achievement as well as failure and muddle, through four key themes:- People. We tell the story of the Royal Navy’s people. We examine the qualities that distinguish people serving at sea: courage, loyalty and sacrifice but also incidents of ignorance, cruelty and cowardice. We trace the changes from the amateur ‘soldiers at sea’, through the professionalization of officers and then ships’ companies, onto the ‘citizen sailors’ who fought the World Wars and finally to today’s small, elite force of men and women. We highlight the change as people are rewarded in war with personal profit and prize money but then dispensed with in peace, to the different kind of recognition given to salaried public servants. Increasingly the people’s story becomes one of highly trained specialists, often serving in branches with strong corporate identities: the Royal Marines, the Submarine Service and the Fleet Air Arm. We will examine these identities and the Royal Navy’s unique camaraderie, characterised by simultaneous loyalties to ship, trade, branch, service and comrades. Purpose. We tell the story of the Royal Navy’s roles in the past, and explain its purpose today. Using examples of what the service did and continues to do, we show how for centuries it was the pre-eminent agent of first the British Crown and then of state policy throughout the world. -

The Society’s most prestigious medal, the Centenary Medal, was presented to Dr Susan Rose. -
Transport and Technology
Transport and Technology Collections 1 Introduction The Transport and Technology Collections reflect the leading role played by Glasgow and the West of Scotland in advances made in scientific enquiry and industrial production. The technology collections were first developed for the opening of the City Industrial Museum in 1870. This was intended to highlight the output of Glasgow’s industries and included samples and models from the important chemical, textile, locomotive and shipbuilding firms in the area. There were also examples of innovations in the making of optical and scientific instruments and communications technology. The museum displayed Glasgow’s civic pride in its scientific and industrial achievements and provided a prestigious front window for its products. It also played an important didactic role in teaching Glasgow’s young citizens about engineering and technology. Many of the collections were loaned and often replaced by newer more impressive exhibits. Even items formally acquired into this collection were regarded with the same spirit of renewal and were often discarded in favour of more representative examples of modern industry. Although much has been lost there is still much of great interest that has survived from the early days of the museum. This is partly as a result of industrial failure when loaned material from failed companies was retained and eventually assimilated into the core collections. Such a direct relationship between the city’s industries and the museum collections gives them an added degree of significance. This is particularly true of the outstanding ship and marine engineering models. The Clyde was at the forefront of revolutionary change in the shipbuilding industry so not only is the collection a truly representative sample of the Clyde’s output, it also represents an important period of ship design and building that is unsurpassed anywhere in the world. -

It was launched on 17 October 1871. It made its maiden voyage on 11 April 1872 from Liverpool to New York, via Queenstown. In May of the same year it made a record westbound crossing, between Queenstown and Sandy Hook, which had been held by Cunard's Scotia since 1866. In October 1874 the Adriatic collided with Cunard's Parthia. Both ships were leaving New York harbour and steaming parallel when they were drawn together. The damage to both ships, however, was superficial. The following year, in March 1875, it rammed and sank the US schooner Columbus off New York during heavy fog. In December it hit and sank a sailing schooner in St. George's Channel. The ship was later identified as the Harvest Queen, as it was the only ship unaccounted for. The misfortune of the Adriatic continued when, on 19 July 1878, it hit the brigantine G.A. -
