However, effective therapies remain poorly understood. Here, we examined the renoprotective effects of melatonin and poricoic acid A (PAA) isolated from the surface layer of Poria cocos, and investigated the effects of combined therapy on the interaction of TGF-β/Smad and Wnt/β-catenin in a rat model of renal ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) and hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R) or TGF-β1-induced HK-2 cells. Methods: Western blot and immunohistochemical staining were used to examine protein expression, while qRT-PCR was used to examine mRNA expression. Coimmunoprecipitation, chromatin immunoprecipitation, RNA interference, and luciferase reporter gene analysis were employed to explore the mechanisms of PAA and melatonin’s renoprotective effects. Results: PAA and combined therapy exhibited renoprotective and antifibrotic effects, but the Correspondence to: Ying-Yong Zhao underlying mechanisms were different during AKI-to-CKD continuum. Official suppression of information about the out- break, particularly authorities’ censorship of the media, and actions to silence frontline hospital personnel who sought to in- form community members, sparked outrage in China and led to unprecedented calls by Chinese citizens for freedom of speech, along with criticism of the censorship system in China. • Several Chinese media outlets, particularly China Business News, Caixin, and Beijing News, published critical investiga- tive reports, interviews, and editorials about the government’s response to the COVID–19 outbreak. While many of these re- ports were subsequently censored by the government, several citizen-led projects to archive disappearing reports emerged. Public security authorities detained three individuals from one such project, Terminus 2049. State and Party media pushed a positive narrative about the government’s efforts to contain the spread, featuring President and Party General Secretary Xi Jinping as ‘‘commander’’ of the ‘‘people’s war’’ against the virus. • Reporters Without Borders’ (RSF) 2020 press freedom index ranked China the fourth worst country in the world for press freedom (177 out of 180) for the second year in a row. RSF pointed to ongoing censorship, harassment and detention of journalists, and the pervasive spread of surveillance as key fac- tors in its assessment. China imprisoned the most journalists in the world in 2019, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).

Lawrence In Congress, multiple bills and resolutions have been introduced related to China’s Specialist in Asian Affairs handling of a novel coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan, China, that expanded to become the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) global pandemic. This report provides a timeline of key developments in the early weeks of the pandemic, based on available public reporting. It also considers issues raised by the timeline, including the timeliness of China’s information sharing with the World Health Organization (WHO), gaps in early information China shared with the world, and episodes in which Chinese authorities sought to discipline those who publicly shared information about aspects of the epidemic. Prior to January 20, 2020—the day Chinese authorities acknowledged person-to-person transmission of the novel coronavirus—the public record provides little indication that China’s top leaders saw containment of the epidemic as a high priority. Thereafter, however, Chinese authorities appear to have taken aggressive measures to contain the virus. The Appendix includes a concise version of the timeline. December 30: The Wuhan Municipal Health Commission issues “urgent notices” to city hospitals about cases of atypical pneumonia linked to the city’s Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market. Although there are several reviews documenting falls prevention programs for community-dwelling older adults, no systematic reviews of the scope and quality of falls prevention interventions in Mainland China exist. Therefore, the aim of this study was to systematically review falls prevention interventions for community-dwelling older people living in Mainland China. Methods: We systematically reviewed literature from Chinese and English databases. All types of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and quasi-experimental studies published from 1st January 1990 to 30th September 2019 were included. Observational studies and studies in care facilities and hospitals were excluded. Narrative synthesis was performed to summarise the key features of all included studies. Quality assessment was conducted using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool and ROBINS-I tool for randomised and non-randomised studies respectively. Results: A total of 1020 studies were found, and 101 studies were included in the analysis. Overall, very few high quality studies were identified, and there was insufficient rigor to generate reliable evidence on the effectiveness of interventions or their scalability.
