The Octodontidae Revisited
THE OCTODONTIDAE REVISITED UNA REVISION DE OCTODONTIDAE Milton Gallardo, R. Ojeda, C. González, and C. Ríos ABSTRACT The monophyletic and depauperate assemblage of South American octodontid rodents has experienced an extensive adaptive radiation from above-ground dwellers to subterranean, saxicolous, and gerbil-like deserticolous life forms. Complex and saltational chromosomal repatterning is a hallmark of octodontid evolution. Recent molecular evidence links these chromosome dynamics with quantum genome size shifts, and probably with reticulate evolution via introgressive hybridization in the desert dwellers Tympanoctomys barrerae and Pipanacoctomys aureus. Genome duplication represents a novel mechanism of evolution in mammals and its adaptive role is reflected in the ability of deserticolous species to colonize the extreme environment of salt flats. Unique to Tympanoctomys is a the rigid bundle of hairs behind the upper incisors which is crucial to efficiently peel saltbush leaves and probably explains its broader distribution relative to P. aureus. This feature, in association with other attributes (e. g., specialized kidneys, large bullae, feeding behavior) has enabled Tympanoctomys to cope with extreme environmental conditions. RESUMEN Los octodóntidos son un grupo de roedores monofiléticos que han experimentado una extensa radiación adaptativa desde especies que viven en la superficie a formas de vida subterráneas o de tipo gerbos, especializados a la vida desertícola. E-mail: rvasquez@ abello.dic. uchile.cl ABSTRACT Social foragers frequently show diminishing levels of per capita vigilance as the group size increases. This phenomenon, called the "group size effect", was studied in a natural population of the caviomorph rodent Octodon degus. Through field observations of groups of different size, I quantified the duration of bouts of vigilance and foraging. Results showed that degus spent significantly less time being vigilant as group size increased, which agrees with the group size effect. The reduction in vigilance was achieved through a decrease in the duration of vigilance bouts as well as in scanning rate. Further, foraging bouts of group members lasted longer with increasing group size. Total group vigilance also increased with group size. Degus adjusted their behavior in similar manner to that of other social feeding species. Time saved from vigilance was allocated to foraging. Group foraging may confer anti-predator as well as short-term feeding advantages to 0. degus. Further studies in this area of research may help to understand the evolution of sociality in this species. Key words: Anti-predator behavior, foraging, group size, Octodon degus, sociality. These rodents, highly adapted to desert environments, are semi-fossorial with capacity to move on the surface as well as to build burrows. The shape, structure, and size of the limbs are described. Contrary to what was expected for scratch digging semi-fossorial species, Tympanoctomys have slender humerus, radius and ulna; with narrow epicondyles of the humerus and short olecranon of the ulna with poorly developed processes. -

The study area is located approximately 13 o South and 28 o 35 East, about 1,300 m above sea level, is characterised by average monthly rainfall of 1,198 mm (with a highly variable rain: monthly range 0-283 mm, with 5 to 7 virtually rainless months per year). The region exhibits a mosaic of built up areas, culti- vated fields, forests and natural habitats of the original Zambezian savannah woodland. -

We investigated the phylogenetic relationships of 14 Echimyidae (spiny rats), one Myocas- toridae (nutrias) and one Capromyidae (hutias) genera based on three newly sequenced nuclear genes (APOB, GHR and RBP3) and five previously published markers (the nuclear RAG1 and vWF, and the mitochondrial cytochrome b, 12S rRNA and 16S rRNA). We recovered a well-supported phylogeny within the Echimyidae, although the evolutionary relationships among arboreal echimyid taxa remain unresolved. Molecular divergence times estimated using a Bayesian relaxed molecular clock suggest a Middle Miocene origin for most of the extant echimyid genera. Echimyidae seems to constitute an example of evolu- tionary radiation with high species diversity, yet they exhibit only narrow skull morpholog- ical changes, and the arboreal and terrestrial taxa are shown to retain numerous plesiomorphic features. The most recent common ancestor of spiny rats is inferred to be a ground-dwelling taxon that has subsequently diverged into fossorial, semiaquatic and arbo- real habitats. The arboreal clade polytomy and ancestral character estimations suggest that the colonization of the arboreal niche constituted the keystone event of the echimyid radia- tion. However, biogeographical patterns suggest a strong influence of allopatric speciation in addition to ecology-driven diversification among South American spiny rats. -
Notes on the Taxonomy of Mountain Viscachas of the Genus Lagidium Meyen 1833 (Rodentia: Chinchillidae)

E-mail [email protected] (PT), [email protected] (SOL) * Corresponding author Mountain viscachas of the genus Lagidium Meyen 1833 are medium-to-large hystricomorph rodents (1.5 -- 3 kg) that live in rocky outcrops from Ecuador to southern Argentina and Chile. Lagidium includes more than 20 nominal forms, most of them based on one or two individuals, which were first described during the 18th and 20th. Subsequent revisions reduced the number of species to three to four, depending upon the author. Within the genus, Lagidium viscacia (Molina, 1782) is the most widely distributed species, with populations apparently extended from western Bolivia to southern Argentina and Chile. We reviewed > 100 individuals of Lagidium, including skins and skulls, most of them collected in Argentina. We performed multivariate statistical analysis (i. e., principal component analysis [PCA], discriminant analysis [DA]) on a subset of 55 adult individuals grouped according to their geographical origin, using 16 skull and tooth measurements. In addition, we searched for differences in cranial anatomy across populations. PCA and DA indicate a moderate overlap between individuals from southern Argentina, on one hand, and northwestern Argentina, western Bolivia and northern Chile, on the other. The external coloration, although variable, showed a predominance of gray shades in southern Argentina and yellowish gray in northwestern Argentina. -
Boreal Mammalogy 2019 Syllabus
BOREAL MAMMALOGY ACM Wilderness Field Station Program Long Course Description The behavior, ecology and morphology of animals have been shaped by evolution, within the constraints of anatomy and physiology. Thus animals are adapted in many ways to the environments around them. In this course, we shall investigate the adaptations of mammals for life in the Quetico/Superior region. Most mammals are secretive and more difficult to observe than some other animals, such as birds and insects. Mammals, however, often leave evidence of their activities: tracks and scats (feces) are often easy to find, scrapings associated with scent marks are often left on the ground or trees, well used trails can be found in the woods, and plants eaten by mammals have missing leaves, branches or bark. Many small mammals are easy to live-trap for studies of behavior, population dynamics and reproduction. And some mammals, such as squirrels and beavers, can be observed directly, if one has patience. Within the course of a month there is much that can be learned about the mammals of the Quetico/Superior. The main topics for investigation in this course will be mammal life histories, foods, habitat choices and effects on habitat, populations, and natural history. We shall set up live-trapping grids to study small mammals, take hikes to find tracks, scats, animal trails, take day-trips by canoe and longer trips to places we can not reach on foot and that will give us opportunities not available near the field station to see mammals and their sign. We may also do some small experiments around beaver ponds.
