You are beginning this course with language arts skills, knowledge, and insights. This course is designed to help you gain further insights into yourself and others, and to expand your skills and knowledge in English language arts. As well, you will learn strategies you can apply in other courses and non-school situations. As a student enrolled in an independent study course, you have taken on a dual role—that of a student and a teacher. As a student, you are responsible for mastering the lessons and completing the process work and assignments. As a teacher, you are responsible for checking your work carefully, noting areas in which you need to improve, and motivating yourself to succeed. What Will You Learn in This Course? In this course you will have the opportunity to read short stories, poems, non-fiction works, and novels. You will also listen to audio performances and view visual works. Besides reading, listening, and viewing the works of others, you will be writing, representing, and speaking about those works and your own creations. What Are General Learning Outcomes and Specific Learning Outcomes? General learning outcomes (five in total) and specific learning outcomes (56 in total) are the learning outcomes that have been identified for Grade 10 English language arts students in Manitoba (see Appendix A). In this course, you will be involved in a variety of learning experiences that enable you to achieve many of the learning outcomes. General learning outcomes are statements that identify the knowledge, skills and strategies, and attitudes that students are expected to demonstrate with increasing competence and confidence from Kindergarten to Grade 12. The general learning outcomes are connected to each other, and can be achieved through a variety of reading and writing, speaking and listening, and viewing and representing experiences. Introduction 3 In Manitoba, English language arts students read, write, speak, listen, view, and represent to n explore thoughts, ideas, feelings, and experiences (General Learning Outcome 1) n comprehend and respond personally and critically to oral, print, and other media texts (General Learning Outcome 2) n manage ideas and information (General Learning Outcome 3) n enhance the clarity and artistry of communication (General Learning Outcome 4) n celebrate and build community (General Learning Outcome 5) Specific learning outcomes are statements that describe the knowledge, skills and strategies,

  • “Amarillo by Morning” the Life and Songs of Terry Stafford 1
In the early months of 1964, on their inaugural tour of North America, the Beatles seemed to be everywhere: appearing on The Ed Sullivan Show, making the front cover of Newsweek, and playing for fanatical crowds at sold out concerts in Washington, D.C. and New York City. On Billboard magazine’s April 4, 1964, Hot 100 2 list, the “Fab Four” held the top five positions. 28 One notch down at Number 6 was “Suspicion,” 29 by a virtually unknown singer from Amarillo, Texas, named Terry Stafford. The following week “Suspicion” – a song that sounded suspiciously like Elvis Presley using an alias – moved up to Number 3, wedged in between the Beatles’ “Twist and Shout” and “She Loves You.”3 The saga of how a Texas boy met the British Invasion head-on, achieving almost overnight success and a Top-10 hit, is one of triumph and “Amarillo By Morning” disappointment, a reminder of the vagaries The Life and Songs of Terry Stafford 1 that are a fact of life when pursuing a career in Joe W. Specht music. It is also the story of Stafford’s continuing development as a gifted songwriter, a fact too often overlooked when assessing his career. Terry Stafford publicity photo circa 1964. INFORMATION TO USERS This reproduction was made from a copy of a manuscript sent to us for publication and microfilming. While the most advanced technology has been used to pho tograph and reproduce this manuscript, the quality of the reproduction is heavily dependent upon the quality of the material submitted. Pages in any manuscript may have indistinct print. In all cases the best available copy has been filmed. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help clarify notations which may appear on this reproduction. 1. Manuscripts may not always be complete. When it is not possible to obtain missing pages, a note appears to indicate this. 2. When copyrighted materials are removed from the manuscript, a note ap pears to indicate this. 3. Oversize materials (maps, drawings, and charts) are photographed by sec tioning the original, begirming at the upper left hand comer and continu ing from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps. Each oversize page is also filmed as one exposure and is available, for an additional charge, as a standard 35mm slide or in black and white paper format.* 4. • Woody Guthrie's Forgotten Dissent from the Atomic
Volume 16 | Issue 7 | Number 3 | Article ID 5133 | Apr 01, 2018 The Asia-Pacific Journal | Japan Focus “Hey Hey General Mackymacker, Ho, Ho Mr. Lovitt:” Woody Guthrie’s Forgotten Dissent From the Atomic Bomb to the Korean War Jeremy Kuzmarov Woody Guthrie is an American icon best known for his 1940 song “This Land is Your Land” which has been sung in countless classrooms, political conventions, demonstrations, and even at the Obama presidential inaugural. Sometimes forgotten is the fact that the song, written in response to Irving Berlin’s “God Bless America,” has a subversive message in paying tribute to public rather than private ownership of land and property and in its striving for social equality. Woody was a radical whose worldview was forged by the poverty he witnessed growing up in rural Oklahoma during the 1910s and by the Sooner Socialist Party, the second largest in the country outside of New York City. His music celebrated working class struggles and condemned oppressive institutions and authority.
