G.J B.A.H.S., Vol.2 (2) 2013:90-93 ISSN: 2319 – 5584 HISTOPATHOLOGICAL CHANGES IN THE INTESTINE OF INDIAN FLYING BARB (ESOMUS DANRICUS) EXPOSED TO ORGANOPHOSPHATE PESTICIDE, MALATHION (EC 50) Suchismita Das1 & Abhik Gupta2 1Department of Life science and Bioinformatics, Assam University, Silchar, India 2Department of Ecology and Environmental Science, Assam University, Silchar, India Abstract Indian flying barb (Esomus danricus) was exposed to three sublethal concentrations of malathion (EC 50) for 28 days and intestinal histopathology was observed by light microscopy after staining with Haematoxylin-Eosine. In the exposed fishes, chronic inflammatory cell infiltration (lymphocyte) along with ulceration of mucosa and vacuolation was observed. Higher doses had severe effects. Keywords: intestine, inflammation, vacuolation, teleost, organophosphate. 1. Introduction Malathion (diethyl [(dimethoxy phosphino thioyl] butanediotae) is an organophosphate pesticide commonly applied for public health (De Guise et al., 2004) and control of agricultural pests (EPA, 2000). Malathion is highly toxic to fish (Mohan, 2000) due to the lack of hydrolytic enzymes in fish (Arecchon and Plumb, 1990). Malathion appears to inhibit AChE activity (Savolainen, 2001). In North Eastern India, Indian flying barb, Esomus danricus (Hamilton-Buchanan), a teleost fish, mostly inhabits water bodies near agricultural fields. Malathion, as well as other pesticides, used in agriculture find their way with runoff water interfering with all the metabolic processes and get accumulated in vital organs thereby affecting the functional activity of both exocrine and endocrine systems of non-target aquatic organisms including fish (Sahai, 1987). Malathion is also commonly found at low concentrations in rivers, streams and drinking water (Hoffman et al., 2000; Larson et al., 1999), thus affecting fish as well as mammals. -

The present study was conducted in some selected areas of haor for a period of 6 months from July 2014 to December 2014. The major forces behind the loss of biodiversity in freshwater are habitat degradation and fragmentation, increased sedimentation, exotic Naresh Lavudya species introduction, water abstraction, over-harvesting, pollution, and global climate change impacts. College of Fisheries Science, The diversity of Freshwater fish in the River Narmada and its tributaries in the central state of Madhya Junagadh Agricultural Pradesh has been reviewed. A total of 176 species from fresh water habitats out of which 13 orders, 46 University, Veraval, Gujarat, families, 107 genera, and 176 species. The order Cypriniformes represented the highest diversity with 79 India species followed by Perciformes (35 species), Siluriformes (32 species), Clupeiformes (11 species), etc. This review presents up-to-date information on freshwater fish diversity of the River Narmada. Freshwater fish diversity information could also provide a baseline for future more complex ecological studies, and planning the conservation and sustainable use of inshore inland water resources. But over the decades, many Nepali scientists and students have heavily researched on the faunal resources of Nepal. Collaboration and interaction between foreign researchers and Nepali researchers and students are important step for further research and conservation of Nepali fauna. -

Vertebrate Beginnings: Text © The McGraw−Hill Animal Diversity, Third The Chordates Companies, 2002 Edition 15 chapter •••••• fifteen Vertebrate Beginnings The Chordates It’s a Long Way from Amphioxus Along the more southern coasts of North America, half buried in sand on the seafloor,lives a small fishlike translucent animal quietly filtering organic particles from seawater.Inconspicuous, of no commercial value and largely unknown, this creature is nonetheless one of the famous animals of classical zoology.It is amphioxus, an animal that wonderfully exhibits the four distinctive hallmarks of the phylum Chordata—(1) dorsal, tubular nerve cord overlying (2) a supportive notochord, (3) pharyngeal slits for filter feeding, and (4) a postanal tail for propulsion—all wrapped up in one creature with textbook simplicity. Amphioxus is an animal that might have been designed by a zoologist for the classroom. During the nineteenth century,with inter- est in vertebrate ancestry running high, amphioxus was considered by many to resemble closely the direct ancestor of the vertebrates. Its exalted position was later acknowledged by Philip Pope in a poem sung to the tune of “Tipperary.”It ends with the refrain: It’s a long way from amphioxus It’s a long way to us, It’s a long way from amphioxus To the meanest human cuss. Well,it’s good-bye to fins and gill slits And it’s welcome lungs and hair, It’s a long, long way from amphioxus But we all came from there. But amphioxus’place in the sun was not to endure.For one thing,amphioxus lacks one of the most important of vertebrate charac- teristics,a distinct head with special sense organs and the equipment for shifting to an active predatory mode of life. -

Birbhum, Introduction West Bengal, India Genus Esomus Swainson, (Flying barb) is characterized by elongate, compressed body with small head and mouth that is obliquely directed upwards without a symphysial knob and two pairs of barbels of which maxillary pair is very long. So far eight species have been reported from different parts of the world of which four species are of Indian viz. E. danricus, E. barbatus, E. thermoicos and E. manipurensis. Among these, E. danricus is widely distributed [1-4] [3, 4] in India . E. barbatus and E. thermoicos are restricted to south India . E. manipurensis is found only in north east India [5]. -

1 Fishing Practices in Prehistoric Sri Lanka Wasantha S Weliange Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology, 407, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 7, Sri Lanka Corresponding Author; [email protected] Abstract A considerable amount of information on prehistoric culture has been gathered from various areas in Sri Lanka. Batadomba Lena Cave in Kuruwita and Bundala in the southern Sri Lanka are two prehistoric sites which are as old as 40,000 years and 125,000 years respectively. Several caves in the wet, dry and intermediate zones were excavated during the last 70 years and a large amount of evidence has been discovered from these sites, which could be used to explain the prehistoric culture in Sri Lanka. Archaeo-faunal evidence helped to describe the prehistoric man not only as a hunter gatherer but also as a fisherman in the floodplains, rivers and streams. The simplest form of fishing tools made out of bones were discovered from many prehistoric settlements in Sri Lanka, indicating that there existed a gradual development of fishing technique and related activities. In this synthesis, an attempt is made to discuss the probable fishing techniques practised in the prehistoric times in habitats such as flood plains, rivers and streams. In this regard, information on, 1) traditional fishing practices of native Sri Lankans; 2) fish guilds that are popular in the dietary habits of Sri Lankans; 3) remains of fishes discovered from the prehistoric settlements; and 4) ecology of freshwater fishes was evaluated. Thirteen food-fish guilds were recognized in the dietary culture of Sri Lanka and were ranked considering the relative importance in the human diet.
