by Mary L. larsgaard, Colorado School of Mines {303}273-3697

TIME OFF FOR GOOD BEHAVIOR: I'll be on academic leave June I-August 31, so I shan't be able to put together the next "Front" column; Mary Anne Waltz has therefore very kindly agreed to write it. This is actually perfect timing, since Mary Anne, our CC:OA rep. will be fresh (we'l. exhausted but with the info fresh in her mind) from ceOA meetings at Annual. DeLe - news from Ellen Caolan: Ellen would like to encourage all map libraries to report map duplicates to the Online Data Quality Control Section at DeLe (ED. - I think this trans- lates to Ellen Caplan). Use the Duplicate Report FOl11lin the Cataloging: User Manual, 2d ed .• and note on the fonn that the records are for maps; also, try to send them in on a regular basis, preferably every week or so. Questions? talk to Ellen (614)764-6000; or their BOO number. Ellen has merged 141 records from September 1985-April 1986 (58 done in April). On to the 2d ed (1986) Maps format. Turn immediately to 533 and 534; 534, which was for- merly not used, is now used by LCGM~for map facsimiles; see examples #12341653, 11915825, 11915826. There are a few errors in the Format; please correct the following. Map FF:15 "Form:" The code for "not applicable" is» (blank), not "b", The 507 field was not included in this ed. o,f the format; it 1S still valid for input on pre-AACR2 records, and will be included with the next set of rev. pages. Map 5:14 "Field 534" The input standard is correct, i.e., ignore "Do not use." ;1 is NOT VALIDfor input; the examples should be for #p.

FROMUIU: Karte des Oeutsches Retches 1:100,000. Grossb1att (192 - ) is OCLC 10107100.

YOUMEANYOU'RE UNFORTUNATEENOUGHTO HAVETO USE OEWEYTO CLASSYOUR~~PS? Well, misery loves company, or so they say; so you mlght want to get in touch with Pat Moore (at Detroit Public library, at least for a few months), who is looking for a team of two other persons to help prepare an index to the area table (Table 2).

ANOTHERCITATIONFORLANDMEASURES: Reasonover, J. R. (?1 don't have a date written down, but it's OCLe 2686397). Land measures: French, Spanish and English land measures of the United States and Canada with units, English equivalents, reduction and con- version factors. Houston TX: Privately printed.

CS8: I was pleased to note in #26 (Fall 1984) that "Charts. dteqrams , etc." is listed as a commonly used subdivision that may be used as a free-floater, that is, without its use being specifically established in LCSH.

DATES: for when you're trying to figure out when something were published - AMSbecame Topographic Commandin Jan. of 1969; OMAwas formed in 1973.

ANDNOWFORTHE HUIIDURDUSPORTION INTENTIONAL,THAT IS OF THE COLUMN:See the RTSD Newletter 10/6; 1985; p, 66 or Worst Seria tt e of the Year awards - my favorites are the "The More It Changes, The Itlre It Stays The Same" award and the "Snake in the Grass" award. For the happiest we've seen library directors and chancellors look in a long time. see LJ, Jan. 1986, p . 33, for one of each beaming as they toss a drawer full of cards into file 13. Not really humor, but at least·it's good news: from WAMLIB17(-2):131: Mr. Fossedal remained for the balance of the morning session, went to lundh with CUAC representatives, .. Before he left, Hr. Fosseda1 expressed his sentiments re9arding his time with CUAC:""I will work very had to try and help map 1ibrarians ... J think you are one of the most effective lobbying groups, whether you mean to be or not, because I think you are so reasonable ... " And to prove that map librarians getting t0gether is GOODfor us - recent medical research has clearly shown that a good laugh improves circulation, fills lungs with oxygen-rich air, stimulates alertness horncnes , alters the brain (diminishing tension in central nervous sys tern), counteracts fear, anger, and depress ion, and pcs s i b1y relieves pain. Just think - enjoying ourselves is medically sound' base l tne 7(3): 73 NEW MAPS

base line 7(3): 77 A Directory of UK Map Collections, 2nd ed .• London; British Cartographic Society, 1985. ISBN 0904482081. L4.00 UK members, L4.50 UK non-members, L5.00 nonmembers elsewhere. The 8ritish Cartographic Society has published a second edition of their Directory of UK Map Collections. The first edition included 144 libraries and contained a minimal amount of information for each one. This new enlarged includes nearly 600 libraries. The entires are arranged in alphabetical order under the name of the parent organization. Each entry contains the following information: address and telephone number; responsible person; opening hours and restrictions for use; copying facilities; and a brief description of the library, including·special collections, strengths of the collection, and relevant publications. Three indexes are included. First is an alphabetical index to all the collections with entires under possible variant forms. The second is an alphabetical geographical location index. The third lists significant keywords. cattograp~ers, area specializations, and special collections. This new edition of the Directory is a very valuable resource. The type of infor- mation it provides for the UK Libraries is similar to that provided by two new direc- tories of U.S. libraries, Nap Collections in the United States and Canada and Guide to US Map Resources. The only comment I have is that it would be useful to have a personal name index. recommend that it be purchased by US map libraries. (NJV)
