As a result of active herpetological research, the number of species has steadily increased in recent years. I present here a new checklist of amphibian and reptile species distributed in Turkey, revising the nomenclature to reflect the latest taxonomic knowledge. In addition, information about the systematics of many species is also given. In total 35 (19.4%) amphibian and 145 Received: 8 October 2020 (80.6%) reptile species comprise the Turkish herpetofauna. Among amphibians, 16 (45.7%) Accepted: 23 December 2020 anurans and 19 urodelans (54.3%) are present. Among reptiles, 11 (7.6%) testudines, 71 Published online: 31 January 2021 (49%) saurians, 3 (2.1%) amphisbaenians and 60 (41.3%) ophidians are considered part of the herpetofauna. The endemism rate in Turkey is considered relatively high with a total of 34 species (12 amphibian species – 34.3% and 22 reptile species – 15.2%) endemic to Turkey, yielding a total herpetofaunal endemism of 18.9%. While 38 species have not been threat-assessed by the IUCN, 92 of the 180 Turkish herpetofaunal species are of Least Concern (LC), 13 are Near Threatened (NT), 10 are Vulnerable (VU), 14 are Endangered (EN), and 7 are Critically Endangered (CR). -

Darevsky co-described 70 taxa (three genera, 46 species, 21 subspecies) in 44 publications belonging to five orders, eight families of amphibians and reptiles during his career in herpetology. Of this number, three taxa are fossil and 57 taxa are currently considered as valid. By the regions where new taxa were discovered Southeast Asia and Western Asia (includes Caucasus and Asia Minor) dominates. The largest number of descriptions was published in the Russian Journal of Herpetology. One of the most well-known herpetologists in the world, Darevsky was famous not only for his research on the biodiversity of amphibians and reptiles, but also for the discovery of natural parthenogenesis, hybridization, and polyploidy in higher vertebrates, which fundamentally changed biolo- gists’ views on speciation mechanisms in animals and brought him worldwide recognition. -

Accepted: November 10, 14 15 2018 15 16 16 17 17 18 18 19 Abstract 19 Knowing the age structure of endangered species is important in order to contribute to future conser- 20 20 vation studies for such species. In this context, we investigated age structure, age at sexual maturity, 21 potential reproductive lifespan and longevity in a population of the Charnali lizard, Darevskia dryada, 21 22 an endangered species from Turkey. The results show that the Charnali lizard has a longer life span 22 23 than other lizards of the genus Darevskia that live in the same region. We estimated that these lizards 23 24 attain their sexual maturity at the age of one or two years and the potential reproductive life span for 24 25 males and females is six and five years, respectively. As in many other lizards, the Charnali lizard 25 exhibited a low-level male-biased sexual dimorphism in terms of increased size. -

While this situation constituted their habitat requirements, it also provides the suitable conditions that species can maintain their population within their distribution area. Although S. stellio was distributed in a wide area in the Anatolian Peninsula, its distribution in the Black Sea region was limited and has only been reported from a single locality so far. With this study, another locality was added to the distribution area of the species in the Black Sea region, and this record constitutes the northwesternmost locality of the species in the distribution area. Therefore, the present study not only contributes the species distribution trend, but also provides its habitat suitability analysis via Species Distribution Model (SDM) under current bioclimatic conditions in the Anatolian Peninsula. -

The reasons are a high overal diversity of plant and anymal species compared to other places in temperate zone, and continuous antropogenic impact on the wildlife. Proportion of endemic species within Caucasus region also are high, reaching to 80% in some taxnomic groups. Several Priority Areas are outlined, within the Caucasus Hotspot, including the Western Lesser Caucasus (WLS from here). Forests of this area have extraordinarily high proportion of Tertiary relics (Denk, 2001). Until early Pliocene, forests with domination of beach were widespread throughout the northern hemisphere. After “Messinian Crisis” continuous forest area became fragmented. This caused separation of the ranges of many species into isolated fragments and triggered evolution of endemic forms. 20 to 30% of Caucasian flowering plants, fish, and terrestrial vertebrates are endemics, and possibly not less invertebrates. For example 75% of terrestrial mollusks are endemic to the Caucasus. WLC, where humidity is the highest in the western Eurasia (rainfall up to 4,000 mm), has especially high number of endemics. Typical relic species are Rhododendrons, other evergreen shrubs, stream salamanders, mud-divers, beach snail, a complex of rock lizards (Darevskia), Robert’s vole etc. -

Based on the results of herpetological surveys conducted between August 2014 and July 2015, totally 18 species were recorded from 11 different stations around Karçal Mountains of which 7 were amphibians (2 salamanders and 5 frogs) and 11 were reptiles (5 lizards and 6 snakes). Specimens were investigated in terms of some morphological characters like color and pattern features, number of scales and plates and body measurements. In addition, a zoogeographical assessment was also carried out by the chorotype classification of Karçal Mountains. Introduction Biodiversity is the basic of life on Earth, and all organisms play roles in ecosystems processes as part of the food web or otherwise (Steinke, 2016).
