Athletics Update 5 Celebrating 35 Years: The Aerial Circus

Members of the early 70s football rosters were invited to come back and celebrate 35 years since the birth of the Aerial Circus. The Aerial Circus was the phrase used to describe the offense of Head Coach Monte Charles. Unconven‐ tional and unprecedented at the time, the Pointers adopted an of‐ fense that focused solely on passing. Behind Aerial Circus quarterbacks and future Hall‐of‐Famers Mark Olejniczak and Reed Giordana, the Pointers quickly became one of the most entertaining and exciting foot‐ ball teams in the country. Standing (L to R): Gary Starzinski, Reed Giordana, Jack Renken, Lee Duerst, Dennis Eskritt, Orie Sjoberg, Monte Charles went on to a 20– Pete Thompson, Mike Sexton, Mike Wideen, Mike Blasczyk, Steve Zimmerman, and Jeff Hinz. 30 (.400) record in five seasons for Kneeling (L to R): John Shoenberger, Jerry Griffin, Dave Brewer, Pat Robbins, John Nevins, the Pointers.
