Brief Description of the Project The Athikadavu Avinashi Scheme envisages providing irrigation facilities to the drought prone areas and ground water depleted areas in 71 Nos. of tanks and 538 nos. of percolation ponds respectively in 9 taluks of , and districts. Besides, the scheme shall also aim for recharging the tanks and ponds in Ground water critical block of Nambiyur and semi-critical block of Perundurai. The scheme has Gross command area (GCA) and Culturable command area (CCA) of about 9446.44 ha. In the proposed scheme the main canal off takes is to be constructed across Bhavani river near village Thondai at a latitude of 11°14’16.71” N and longitude of 76°46’59.89” E. The main offtake is to be located at 5 km upstream side of Pillur dam which is located at 70 km from . The main canal and two branch canals namely, Avinashi branch canal and Perundurai branch canal passes through Mettupalayam, Coimbatore North, and Sulur taluks of Coimbatore District, Avinashi and Uthukuli Taluks of , and , Gobichetti -palayam and Perundurai taluks of respectively in the state of . The major construction activities involved are as follows: Head Works:  Construction of Weir & leading channel  Construction of Tunnel of about 6,500 m  Cut & Cover

Canals  Main Canal – 35,200 m  Avinashi Branch Canal – 21,650 m  Perundurai Branch Canal – 72,915 m  Kanuvakkarai Branch Canal - 5,200 m A total area of 927.89 Hectares of land is to be acquired for the main canal and two branch canals namely Avinashi Branch and Perundurai branch canal inclusive of an sub branch canal namely Kannuvakkarai sub branch canal in this project.  Patta Land - 864.10 ha  Poromboke Land - 54.43 ha  Reserved Forest Land - 9.36 ha The total estimate cost of the proposed scheme is approximately Rs.3523 Crores for the year 2016-2017.
