The survey is guided in part by the recent classi- fication changes at the Journal of Economic Literature (JEL) regard- ing entrepreneurship. The board voted to create a new classification code, L26, for entrepreneurship. The JEL intends to use this code for all articles and books that focus on economic questions related to entrepreneurial activity. Publications related to questions on occupa- tional choice issues will be cross classified with J23; those focusing on innovation and entrepreneurship will be cross classified with O31; those focusing on finance will be cross classified with G24 Investment * This project was conceived while I was a scholar in residence at the Kauffman Foundation. I would like to thank Robert E. Litan, Robert J. Strom, William J. Baumol, and Carl J. These entrepreneurs — those that Schumpeter described as “the promoters of new combinations” — are individuals who can both see new possibili- ties and assess market needs (Acs and Audretsch, 2003). High Impact Entrepreneurship (HIE) is fundamentally the study of the actions of individuals responding to market opportunities by bringing inventions to market that create wealth and growth. These entrepreneurs are dis- tinct from mere creators of new firms, those that replicate thousands of other establishments. According to Leibenstein (1968, pp. 72, 73, emphasis added):1 “We may distinguish two broad types of entrepreneurial activity: at one pole there is routine entrepreneurship, which is really a type of management, and for the rest of the spectrum

    Press, Community, and Library: A Study of the Chinese-language Newspapers Published in North America Tao Yang Rutgers University United States [email protected] ABSTRACT: Often classified as ethnic press or immigrant press, hundreds of Chinese-language newspapers have been published in North America since 1850s. This paper presents the preliminary results of a comprehensive study of this unique genre of publication. After a brief introduction, this paper offers some general observations about the relationships between the Chinese community and its press. Then it proceeds to outline the historical development of the Chinese- language press in North America. A snapshot of the contemporary newspaper is also provided, with examples from two metropolitan areas: the New York City- New Jersey metropolitan area in the U.S. and the Greater Toronto Area in Canada. At the end of the paper, issues relevant to the library community are discussed. I. Introduction "At the entrance to the Princeton branch of the Asian Food Market, half a dozen free Chinese- language newspapers are stacked next to the usual supermarket offerings..." (Kwong & Miscevic, 2005, p. 401). With a vivid account of the Chinese-language newspapers circulating in Princeton, New Jersey, Kwong and Miscevic began the final part of their highly acclaimed book on Chinese American history. Zick Rubin Harvard University Letitia Anne Peplau University of California, Los Angeles Research with the Just World Scale has indicated that many people believe that the world is a place where good people are rewarded and bad people are punished. Believers in a just world have been found to lie more likely than nonbelievers to admire fortunate people and to derogate victims, thus permitting the believers to maintain the perception that people in fact get what they deserve. Other studies have shed light on the antecedents, correlates, and social consequences of the belief in a just world. Everyone may have a version of the just wolld belief in early childhood (Piaget's "immanent justice"), but some people outgrow the belief quickly and some apparently never do. Believers in a just world have been found to be more religious, more authoritarian, and more oriented toward the internal control of reinforcements than nonbelievers. They are also more likely to admire political leaders and existing social institutions, and to have negative attitudes toward underprivileged groups. Suggestions for modifying the belief in a just world are offered, focusing on the socialization techniques employed by parents, teachers, religious insti- tutions, and the mass media. Both sides of a fundamental religious controversy are set forth in the biblical Book of Job. God tests the faith of Job, a righteous man, by inflicting tremendous suffering upon him, depriving him first of his children, then of his wealth, and finally of his health. Job's friends try to convince him that suffering is necessarily the result of sin, and that therefore he should repent.

Dunfey Award is given annually to a person or organi- zation that exemplifies the personal courage, commitment and compas- sion of Catherine Dunfey: mother, grandmother and great grandmother of the Dunfey family. The award designee will have demonstrated leadership, reflecting a significant and Harry and Ching Lee Wu positive impact on a pressing human 1995 or social condition somewhere in the Catherine A. Dunfey Award world. The recipient will also evi- dence the capacity to work closely with women and men of different races, ideologies and professions while striving to bring about construc- tive change in our world. Harry Wu Mr. Wu Is the Executive Director of the Laogai Research Foundation and a Resident Scholar at Stanford University's Hoover Institution. He has dedicated his life to protecting human rights and expanding civil liberty. As a young student in Beijing, Harry Wu was arrested for expressing counter- revolutionary opinions during the anti-rightist campaign of 1957. In I960, Wu, as a political prisoner, was inducted into China's clandestine system of forced labor camps, the laogai. For nineteen years he was placed in more than twelve different camps in northern China, manufacturing chemicals, mining coal, constructing prison buildings, and working in rice fields and fruit orchards. During these years he was beaten, tortured, and starved. Several times, close to death himself, Wu witnessed the death of many fellow inmates from brutality and starvation and by suicide, he was released from the Laogai in 1979.
