The South American apple snails Pomacea canaliculata and Pomacea maculata have been introduced to other continents where they have successfully established and spread. Our review aims to analyse the mechanisms of the impacts that these invasive Pomacea provoke or may provoke. Nine basic mechanisms were identified: grazing/herbivory/browsing, competition, predation, disease transmission, hybridisation with native species, poisoning/toxicity, interaction with other invasive species, promotion of collateral damage of control methods on non-target species and when acting as prey. The most important impacts are those related to their grazing on aquatic macrophytes, algae and rice and their competition and predation on other aquatic animals, mostly macroinvertebrates, including other apple snails. -

PREFATORY COMMENTS The term ‘apple snail’ refers to species of the freshwater snail family Ampullariidae primarily in the genera Pila, which is native to Asia and Africa, and Pomacea, which is native to the New World. They are so called because the shells of many species in these two genera are often large and round and sometimes greenish in colour. The term ‘golden apple snail’ is applied primarily in south-east Asia to species of Pomacea that have been introduced from South America; ‘golden’ either because of the colour of their shells, which is sometimes a bright orange-yellow, or because they were seen as an opportunity for major financial success when they were first introduced. ‘Golden apple snail’ does not refer to a single species. The most widely introduced species of Pomacea in south-east Asia appears to be Pomacea canaliculata (Lamarck, 1822) but at least one other species has also been introduced and is generally confused with P. canaliculata. At this time, even mollusc experts are not able to distinguish the species readily or to provide reliable scientific names for them. This confusion results from the inadequate state of the systematics of the species in their native South America, caused by the great intra-specific morphological variation that exists throughout the wide distributions of the species. -

Email: [email protected] Abstract The freshwater snail family Ampullariidae includes nine extant genera. Species of Pomacea in particular, but also species of Pila and Marisa, have become invasive where they have been introduced. Introduction of Pomacea spp. to Asia around 1980, initially to Taiwan, followed by their rapid range expansion and development as serious agricultural pests, especially of wetland rice, led to a dramatic increase in research not only in the means to control them but also in the basic systematics necessary to identify them. Ampullariid systematics has always been confused but the advent of molecular approaches, combined with modern morphological study, including extensive study of type material, determined that the two key invasive species in Asia, as well as in the USA and elsewhere, are Pomacea canaliculata and Pomacea maculata. Additional introduced species, both in Asia and elsewhere, include Pomacea scalaris (Taiwan), Pomacea diffusa (Sri Lanka, Australia, USA) and Marisa cornuarietis (Caribbean islands, Spain, USA). -

10 Resumo O Presente Trabalho Teve Por Objetivo Verificar Alterações
Resumo O presente trabalho teve por objetivo verificar alterações morfológico-estruturais durante o desenvolvimento biológico de larvas e adultos de C. quinquefasciatus (Dipetra – Culicidae) após exposição à dose sub-letal de diferentes inseticidas. Na sua execução foram utilizadas mais de 5000 larvas de 3o e 4o instar do mosquito, que foram obtidas de criação semi-natural. As larvas foram colocadas em recipientes plásticos num período de 60 minutos de exposição à solução dos inseticidas, e a seguir foram lavadas em água desclorada, transferidas para outros recipientes contendo água e alimento para posterior observação do seu desenvolvimento. Algumas larvas submetidas a concentrações sub-letais dos inseticidas, foram utilizadas para o preparo de amostras para estudos em histologia e do pH do intestino médio, enquanto outras foram separadas e colocadas em gaiolas para análise do desenvolvimento até adulto. Para a análise de assimetria flutuante, machos e fêmeas adultas do grupo controle e tratado, sobreviventes das larvas expostas à doses sub- letais de inseticidas, foram selecionados e destes, retiradas suas asas para posterior observação através do microscópio estereoscópico com câmera de vídeo acoplada. Foram realizadas medidas de comprimento das nervuras R3, R4+5, M1, M2, M3+4 e do perímetro das nervuras M1 e M2. Os resultados obtidos neste trabalho mostraram que os inseticidas em suas doses sub-letais causam alterações morfológicas no corpo gorduroso e mudanças no pH do tubo intestinal médio das larvas, além de demonstrar efeito na assimetria flutuante nas asas dos adultos. 10 Abstract The aim of the present study was to verify the morphologic and structural alterations during the biological development of larvae and adults of C. -
