However, the Parish Council recognises the need to refurbish and upgrade the toilets to meet current disability legisla- tion and provide a clean and well-maintained facility into the future. It has therefore com- missioned plans which, in addition to the new toilet facilities will make the existing 1st floor Meeting Room more accessible by siting it on the ground floor and moving the Parish Office upstairs. The Pavilion Tea Room overlooking the recreation ground will also be refurbished thereby providing a choice of accessible fa- cilities not just for Parish Council meetings but for hire by local groups and organisations. All public areas will be accessible by ramps and visitors to the Parish Office will no longer have to stand in the public toilets to speak to staff! The Parish Council is currently seeking grants to supplement existing reserves to enable Old Basing and Lychpit Pavilion the work to go ahead and would welcome comments on the proposals from residents. It would also like to hear from local groups inter- ested in using the meeting facilities. Anyone wishing to view detailed plans or discuss the project should contact the Parish Office for fur- ther information or to arrange a visit.

There were games to keep younger children occupied and any- one wishing to escape indoors to warm up could sit in the Church and listen to the Basing Singers. Whilst most brought a picnic, the Crown Pub’s burger and hot dog stand provided some welcome hot food and, of course, liquid refreshment.

St. Mary’s Flower Festival weekend It has been a few years since St. Mary’s Church had a flower festival, and it was a delight that so many people came together to make this year’s celebration of Her Majesty’s 90th Birthday such a success. More than 20 people, including several young families and representatives of other churches and the local floristry course, contributed arrangements around the church and there was also an art exhibition and sale in the Bolton Chapel. If you could make it beyond the BBQ stall, and had failed to ‘dunk the vicar’, you found intricate decorative glass, plants and cakes, and a sec- ond-hand bookstall next to the tea and cake! There was musical talent on display, with a visit from Hook Eagle Morris, the choir of Old Basing Infant School, and a couple of oboe players from Hampshire County Mu- sic Service. There were also nine gardens open around the village across the weekend as a different way of celebrating local talent and beauty, and visitors on the Sunday reported that the cream teas on offer were truly scrumptious. This was a great event supporting our historic local church, and proof yet again that Old Basing and Lychpit is a lively and hugely talented community. Rev’d Mrs Rachel Hartland
