  • St. Mary's Stroke Center Keeps Elvis Tribute Singer in the Groove
St. Mary’s stroke center keeps Elvis tribute singer in the groove BY MARY JANE FINE [email protected] Oh, it’d be easy to use all the Elvis clichés about Al Maeyens’ recent stroke, to say he was “All Shook Up” or in “Trouble” or that it was almost “Too Much,” or that his wife, Dee, could’ve been in “Heartbreak Hotel” if not for her husband’s “Good Luck Charm.” Easy, yes. Too easy. Because a stroke is serious business. Deadly serious. “He was paralyzed, unable to speak, deteriorating COURTESY PHOTO: Al Maeyens likes to sing the rapidly,” recalls Dr. Ali R. He had an Elvis booking scheduled for December 2. He’d been having vertigo and what he calls “shimmering auras” in his eyes. He visited an Ear/Nose/Throat (ENT) specialist, who diagnosed an inner-ear problem. He returned home. The dizziness continued. He went to a nearby hospital ER, got a CT scan, another inner- ear diagnosis and a prescription for Antivert, an antihistamine that treats the symptoms of motion sickness.

  • WDAM Radio's History of Elvis Presley
Listeners Guide To WDAM Radio’s History of Elvis Presley This is the most comprehensive collection ever assembled of Elvis Presley’s “charted” hit singles, including the original versions of songs he covered, as well as other artists’ hit covers of songs first recorded by Elvis plus songs parodying, saluting, or just mentioning Elvis! More than a decade in the making and an ongoing work-in-progress for the coming decades, this collection includes many WDAM Radio exclusives – songs you likely will not find anywhere else on this planet. Some of these, such as the original version of Muss I Denn (later recorded by Elvis as Wooden Heart) and Liebestraum No. 3 later recorded by Elvis as Today, Tomorrow And Forever) were provided by academicians, scholars, and collectors from cylinders or 78s known to be the only copies in the world. Once they heard about this WDAM Radio project, they graciously donated dubs for this archive – with the caveat that they would never be duplicated for commercial use and restricted only to musicologists and scholarly purposes. This collection is divided into four parts: (1) All of Elvis Presley’s charted U S singles hits in chronological order – (2) All of Elvis Presley’s charted U S and U K singles, the original versions of these songs by other artists, and hit versions by other artists of songs that Elvis Presley recorded first or had a cover hit – in chronological order, along with relevant parody/answer tunes – (3) Songs parodying, saluting, or just mentioning Elvis Presley – mostly, but not all in chronological order – and (4) X-rated or “adult-themed” songs parodying, saluting, or just mentioning Elvis Presley.

  • Introducing Elvis Presley
Chapter 1 Introducing Elvis Presley In This Chapter ▶ Outlining Elvis’s place in American history ▶ Summarizing Elvis’s life ▶ Tracking Elvis’s popularity from beginning to end n the one hand, Elvis Presley needs no introduction, because his name Oand face are recognized around the world as the ultimate celebrity. Imitators re-create his act; late-night comedians joke about him; cable chan- nels rerun his movies; and merchandisers exploit his image on everything from T-shirts to lamps. On the other hand, the reasons for his fame have become lost in the trappings of celebrity, especially for younger generations born after his death on August 16, 1977. For the original fans, who have remained loyal for over 50 years, Elvis earned his reputation as the King of Rock ’n’ Roll; for others, discovering why he deserved his fame and a place in American cultural history may be a revelation. In this chapter, I introduce you to Elvis Presley through the high points of his life and career, including his post-death popularity. This chapter sets up an extensive exploration of Elvis Presley — the cultural icon — that details the events of his life, explains the significance of his music, and contemplates his meaning to American pop culture. COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL Identifying a Cultural Icon Almost everyone knows that Elvis Presley was a famous singer, but many people don’t fully understand what he contributed to popular music to earn his widespread fame. Elvis combined different types of music to form a style called rockabilly, which became one of the key sounds in rock ’n’ roll.
