To ••many followers. Silvermines are a new club on the hurling scene, but notbing could be farthesr from the truth, and the club, founded in 1885 has the distinction of taking part in the first hurling match under gaelic rules played in Tipperary.

This was in 1885 when they aelealed Mitchells at Rivers_ town. The following year. the club supplied Martin Gleeson, Dan Gleeson, Pat McGrath and Martin Gleeson to the Counry team wmch defeated South Galway in tne first inter-county game in Dublin.

In the same year as Thurles WOn tho first AII·lreland. 1887, Silver~ mines 100 got among the medals and captured the Silver Cup at Ncnagh on St, P,lrick', Day by bealinl HolyCTQ&S 1- !J 10 nil. The SilvermintS learn that day was: Dan GleSSOn (captain); Ned Hill, Pat Ryan. Dan and Mid:. 1·logan. Jack. Pat and Mick McGrath; Martin Gleeson, Ned Cooney. Pat Hughes, Maurice Feehily. Willie Butler, Murty Darcy, Denis .. Flanagan, Martin and Pat Gleeson, Charles McSorley, Dan Collins, Mick McGrath and Jim Fogarty, the p3ristt weight-thrower.

Uttle was heard of Silvermines subsequently until 1945, when they won the in.termediate hurling final by defeating Moneygall by one paint, the winner being scored by Dan Keogh. with former Tipperary County Board member Dinny Costelloe refereeing. The Silvermines team On that occasion was: J. Healy, D. Keogh, P. Kennedy, M. Gleeson, 8. Quirke, J. Quigley, P. Quirke, J. Quigley, M. Minihan, J. Fogarty, M. Egan, J. Ryan, R. Kennedy, M. Hayes.

Si\vermines won the intermediate title again three years later by defeating Moneygall again by a point.

Th-e next time Si]vermines came to the front was in 1970 when they won the North division's minor hurling title. and also the under 21 fOQtball championship, though this was the '69 competition finisbing late. In 1972 they won the County intermediate championship when ·Glengoo\e conceded a walk-over, and this was the victory which established Si!vermines in senior ranks.

This yelr they won their first North senior hurling title. and they Ire now bidding for their first County senior hurling championship. Sarsfields 1884-1974

Thurles Sarsfields club W J~ founded in 1884 and has the disttinction of winning the first AII- lrelallCl and first County championship in 1887. They defc3ted a North select'on in the final. and Ihe learn that did duty on thai day was: Denis Maller (capt.). Andy, Tom and Matty Maher, Jim Slap'tton, Ned Murphy. Led by Jim Stnpleton, they went all, to defeat Galway in the flu! AII·lreland.

Subsequently Thurles we nt 0' to win twenty-seven County senior hurling championships and six All-'reland championships. In that time. many f .. mous mef and famous leams represented the club. DaDe more famous tlran Ton Semple's Blues, who won titles in 1904, '06, '07. '08, '09 and 'II. The team that won in '04 was: Tom Semple (cap'.), Hawk O'Brien, Paddy Conl'olly, Hugh Shelly, Jer Hayes, Mick O'Brien, Rody Berker', Pat Stapleton (all Thurles); Paddy Hayes, Tom Allen. Mick Pu rcell, ?addy " Best." Billy Maher (Two·Mile-Borri s); Jim Jim Keeffe, Billy, )a-:k and Bill G'eeson ().

Then came a~ofler period of superiority from '42 to '46, when the club won four titles In the years.
