Sheffield Park Academy is part of United Learning, a national group of schools and academies which are united in their mission to bring out 'the best in everyone' and improve the life chances of the children and young people in their care. We pride ourselves on a team of staff who are supportive, friendly and dedicated to providing the very best teaching and learning for our students. Staff across the academy set a culture of high expectations and continuous improvement for students which, in turn, is reflected in the emphasis we place on continuing professional development (CPD) for our staff. We have made significant, sustained progress at GCSE and are proud to be the most improved secondary school in Sheffield over the last nine years. Our summer 2018 Progress 8 score was 0.54, which means that every single student, on average, achieved over half a grade more than what was expected of them. Nevertheless, we are committed to further development in both teaching and learning. The role has arisen due to our increasing student numbers and therefore a subsequent need to expand our Senior Leadership Team. Therefore, we are looking for candidates who have current Senior Leadership experience and who have made a significant impact on the lives and education of students in current roles to make a positive and immediate transition into the role of Vice Principal at Sheffield Park Academy. The academy is situated in purpose-built £30million premises, benefitting from excellent, state-of-the-art facilities and situated within ten minutes of major transport links in the city. As part of United Learning, staff and students are able to access professional development, shared experiences and national opportunities with colleagues and others from across the country. While the development of all staff is important, we make support and professional development of Heads and senior leaders a particular priority, given the impact that leaders have on the life of staff and students alike. Our extensive CPD facilities include: • Talent identification processes to promote staff internally. • Leadership development to prepare our staff for potential promotion. • A pathway of bespoke training opportunities for every member of staff. • CPD within school clusters, using shared resources and facilities to identify strengths and weaknesses. • Meetings with other United Learning staff from similar roles to share ideas and best practice solutions. • Regular peer reviews with action plans that include the option to pursue professional qualifications such as a Masters or NPQML/SL.     23rd March 2020 Dear Parent, Carers and Students, I am writing to thank you for your support and understanding over the past few weeks, especially in the latter part of last week, which was especially challenging given the uncertainty over the situation and the pace at which we had to put a myriad of arrangements into place. Friday, in particular was a day in which the entire school community pulled together. We were all very proud of how understanding and well-behaved the pupils were. Year 11 and Year 13 pupils in particular conducted themselves with maturity and dignity amidst what must be a very confusing and frustrating situation for them. Our priority over the coming weeks will be to try to maintain a sense of community and purpose in our new ‘online school’ for all pupils whilst ensuring that the any of our children and families who need support receive it. Year 11 and Year 13 must also ensure that they continue to build a portfolio of work in each GCSE / A Level subject that they are studying in order to provide evidence to support the claiming of grades, should this be required. Individual subject teachers will provide guidance as to what and how much is needed. Having spent the first weekend of ‘social distancing’ at home with my 3 children, I know how important it will be to keep them occupied and to find creative ways to tire them out over the coming weeks! It is a rather sad story and I would counsel against two pairs of proposals, those from the Southampton Education Trust and from the United Learning Trust. I would also suggest caution over the bids from Oasis Community Learning, although I believe they are unambiguously the best on offer. Schools Background Southampton’s secondary schools are not very good. Perhaps the best up‐to‐ date indicators are the number of 2006 school leavers who gained good (A‐C) GCSEs in Maths and English—minimal skills for twenty-first century employment—and the percentage of leavers not in education, employment or training.     Virtual Poetry Slam #ELPoetrySlam Matthew Courtney @mattheweduk Context Goresbrook School, Winston Way Academy, Salisbury Manor Primary School and Walthamstow Academy are part of the United Learning, East London Cluster. We are passionate about our children becoming life-long readers and lovers of poetry. Across our cluster we have been responding to the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic by developing a reciprocal and interactive reading community online. We have previously shared our work to encourage reading at home during the school closures with our #ELReadAtHome hashtag and previously with a #GoresbrookExtremeReads hashtag. When organising the Virtual Poetry Slam I was working as the KS1 Phase Leader and Reading Lead at Goresbrook School. We know that poetry can be a useful tool to support children to develop their skills of reading and spelling (Hacking, 2020). However, we also recognise and value poetry as form of reading in its own right (CLPE, 2017) and wanted to celebrate. OU Research inspiration and rationale Reading for Pleasure (RfP) is high on our agenda due to the social justice implications and wider benefits. OECD research has demonstrated that RfP was the biggest indicator of a child’s future success (OECD, 2002). The implications of the OU and UKLA Teachers as Readers (TaRs) research highlight the importance of reciprocal and interactive reading communities and developing teachers’ knowledge of children’s literature, when encouraging children to read for pleasure (Cremin et al., 2014). The TaRs also emphasised the value of ‘synergy between teachers’, children’s and parents’ reading lives and practices’ (Cremin et al., 2014) when building reading communities (see diagram).
