We do not make Trumpington Community College. 4 LEARNING IN OUR SCHOOL 5 Our most important purpose is to teach our young people things that they would not learn outside school. It frees them to think and act more powerfully in their lives. We want all students to be confident learners who enjoy lessons and experience success throughout their school career. In Years 7, 8 and 9 students follow a programme of study based on the National Curriculum. Mastery of language and fluency in mathematical skills are a priority. In Years 10 and 11 the vast majority of our students will study for the English Baccalaureate, taking the core subjects of English, Mathematics, Science, History or Geography and a Foreign Language. They may also take additional subjects, including Arts, Sports and vocational subjects, some of which may be based at the other schools within our Multi-Academy Trust to make the most of the excellent facilities on offer. Our learning day runs from 8am until 4.30pm and during that time a range of clubs and activities are offered, from Languages through to Music, Dance and Drama Clubs and the full range of sports teams. Learning outside the classroom is seen as vitally important and throughout their time at school students take part in a wide range of trips and visits. We could not have hoped “ for a better start: thank you. “ – Parent 6 SUPPORTING OUR STUDENTS 7 When students join our school they are placed into a tutor group. Here we get to know your child: they meet for registration at the start of each day and have personalised meetings throughout their time at school. If you have any concerns about how your child is getting on at school, then your child’s tutor is your first point of contact. We encourage you to contact us at any stage of the year. In each school there is a Student Services office where staff are available all day. Student Services will contact you if your child is away from school, as very good attendance is the key to doing well at school, and they are also available if a student has a concern during the day. The Pastoral Team Includes our Student Services colleagues, Tutors, Pastoral Leaders and Senior Leaders who are responsible for making sure your child is happy and successful at the school. Each student has a Chromebook and an online Google account where you will find homework and resources students have used in the lessons, guidance as to how you can help your child with their homework, and much more. Our Book Nook is available every day from 8am until the end of the learning day, and offers itself for quiet reading or as a study base. We keep you regularly informed about your child’s progress through our school’s online reporting system. You will be able to log into this at any time to see the progress your child is making. Information Evenings provide you with an insight into the school operation and ongoing developments. We also run Progress Consultation evenings where you can make an appointment to talk to any member of staff about your child. We believe that students are most successful when there is a strong, effective partnership between the school and home. 8 EQUALITIES Trumpington Community College is committed to providing the best possible opportunities for all students and staff. UNIFORM Uniform is an important aspect of equal opportunities at Trumpington Community College and ensures that our students feel part of a team. Students are expected to wear a grey jumper with logo and plain grey trousers/skirt purchased from our schoolwear provider SWI, along with a plain blue buttoned shirt and plain black shoes purchased from any supplier. This new uniform is compulsory for all year groups including year 11 from September 2020. Full details can be found on our website: http://trumpington.education/school-life/our- uniform/ 9 SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS All staff share responsibility for students’ educational needs. We have a highly effective Equality and Intervention Team which work with all subject departments to help every child make good progress. The individual needs of each student are identified when they join the school and assessed at regular intervals during their time with us. Appropriate support is then put into place. This can take the form of classroom support, individual tuition, small group work, lunchtime or after school clubs. We keep in close contact with families to make sure you are involved in decisions about your child. SAFEGUARDING Trumpington Community College is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people in our care and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. 10 CREATIVE ARTS SPORT 11 The Arts and Performing Arts are very important in the life of our school, and we promote and encourage engagement in these subjects. There is a very wide range of opportunities available to students both in the curriculum and via extra- curricular activities. All students follow a core curriculum in Years 7–9, when they study arts and performing arts subjects in rotation. Across GCSE we offer courses in Art, Music, Drama and Dance. Outside lesson time there is a vibrant programme of activities that include Dance and Drama Clubs, Film Making, Arts Clubs, and Orchestras and Choirs. There are many opportunities for students to showcase their work. We are delighted to have achieved Artsmark Gold Award, a national scheme which recognises the high quality and range of Arts activities across our schools. Digital technologies are well supported in our school, led by the award-winning robotics club. Our school has a strong and successful sporting culture and we are proud of the wide range of sports we offer both during lessons and after school in our superb facilities. Physical Education is a compulsory subject in every year. In Key Stage 3 we focus on ensuring every student develops sports skills alongside a commitment to fitness and healthy living. In the GCSE years students may choose to take examination courses in Sport, or continue with a range of more general fitness activities. After school and at lunchtimes a wide range of clubs and activities are on offer, including team sports of Rugby, Football, Cricket and Netball as well as individual pursuits such as Table Tennis, Tennis, Athletics Fencing and Rowing. Competition is very important to us, whether it is within the school or with other schools in the Cambridge area or nationally. Students who excel at Sport are presented with Sporting Colours Half Blue or Full Blue Awards. The school year always finishes with our annual Sports Event where the Winners Cup is awarded to the team that has achieved sporting success. 12 PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT We believe at Trumpington Community College that character development is as important as academic development. We expect high levels of responsibility and encourage active contribution to the community. Our young people are expected to contribute to the school and to society. There are a number of areas of learning which we believe are essential in developing the whole person. These focus on cultural, social, spiritual and moral development and preparing students for their future in the world beyond school.
