A CALLER'S REWARD

Please give me a minute His head was apoundin' Of your precious time His hands were like ice To tell you a story And wondered just briefly Of a caller, in rhyme. Oh, what a price. This caller has traveled With fiddle music playin' From east to the west And brass booming clear And calling square dances With deep determination Is what he likes best. He called loud and clear. He started his callin' He must have shook for hours A long time ago Or so it seemed to him And worked everyday But desire was overwhelming So the calls he would know. He had to call again. He bought a new system Calling's habit forming And a new mike, And it's hard to understand Pored through new records How this could be rewarding To find one he liked. To those with a mike in hand. It cost him a bundle Although it takes a lot of work It cost him a mint To teach beginners squares For the sake of square dancin' Some learn fast ... some learn slow He felt it well spent. And some I swear don't care. Then practice and practice When they learn the calls he drilled Day after day And he sees them in a square His goal was to throw It's then he feels the real reward The cheat sheet away. Because of him they're there. He knew it completely It's love that he is givin' He knew it by heart When he teaches that new call Before the whole club And love he is receiving He was ready to start. When they're dancing wall to wall.

Few contemporary callers have left their mark so indelibly engraved in the shaping of today's square dance picture than has Les Gotcher. LABEL TITLE ARTIST I want to thank Ed Foote of Wexford, Pennsylvania, for noting some errors in my reported figures from April. Just shows what happens if you don't check all your work. I missed a Right and Left Thru on one, a Square Thru on another (ouch!) and a third error came right off the record jacket. I'll try harder in the future not to repeat those errors in editing again. As evidenced, callers need to work with their own figures and judge for themselves what choreography works and what does not. Figures whose results are not so obvious on paper, must be checked for accuracy and timing before inflicting them on his or her dancers. So, work out those figures before using them instead of finding in the middle of a singing call that something is not right. Please do not depend too heavily on the printed figure and look to the abilities of your dancers instead.

4B-6137 Miles And Miles Of Texas Damon Coe One of my favorite Texas Swing Bands has always been Asleep At The Wheel. One of their finest tunes was "Miles and Miles Of Texas." This SD adaption is faithful to the melody and words, uses a boom-chucks beat and is at the mid-point on the excitement scale. An upbeat ballad that conjures up sentiment for the grandeur and scale of Texas. Figure: Hds(Sds) Square Thru 4, Do Sa Do, Swing thru, Boys Run, Ferris Wheel Centers Pass Thru, Slide Thru, Corner Swing and Promenade! LH-1046 Fever Henry Israel Kinda funky and kinda smoky, kinda like your torchin' in a club somewhere. Muted horns cryin' in the background make for a fun piece. Make it yours but make it funky. Figure: Hds(Sds) Promenade 1/2, Pass The Ocean, Extend, Suring Thru, Spin The Top, Ends Move up & a R&L Thru, Square Thru 3/4, Swing Corner and Promenade! HH-5215 Dream A Little Dream Of Me Kip Garvey This month is like the sixties and deja vu all over again. A Mamas and The Papas tune with a relaxed lilt and nice, familiar melody. Great closer for your dances if you like to send people home on that note. Figure: Four Ladies Chain 3/4, Heads(Sides) Star Thru, Double Pass Thru, Leaders Trade, Do Sa Do, Touch 1/4, Centers Trade, Centers Run 3/4 Tag, Corner Swing and Promenade!

42 American Square Dance, July 19911 MR-49 (Rerelease) Buckets Mark Clausing Quick moving and spiritually based with an unusual figure arrangement. The concept with some solid work would make for a great showpiece. Please note however that there are background vocals cut in on the instrumental side. Figure: Please forgive not reporting the figure used for this tune. Due to its quite different arrangement, printing the figure and lyrics would take a full page of print to cover it properly. GMP-503 Crackers Hoedown/Ross Howell Bright and reminiscent patter music from GMP. A cool beginning with a fiddle opener, then guitars and fiddle share the melody lines. I've also been using this for some simple contras at dance parties. No banjoes here, but they weren't missed! SSK-102 This Diamond Ring Milt Floyd What did I say earlier? More 60's stuff this time from Gary Lewis & The Playboys. Solid percussion base and a faithful melody line. Good relaxer - let this one shine for you! Figure: *Uses the Standard Figure. DR-26 (Rerelease) Brush Those Tears From Your Eyes BM Reynolds Lots of relaxing music this month, this one is no different with a definite desert feel. Also included with the record is an easy level two step round dance by Don and Jean Shultz of Yankton, South Dakota. Figure: Hds(Sds) Square thru 4, Do Sa Do Corner, Spin Chain Thru, Girls Circulate 2x, Turn Thru, Allemande Left, Walk By one & Swing the next, Promenade! SSR-202 Do I Ever Cross Your Mind G. Hardy/C. Froggatt Good to see Silver Sounds from the New England area making records again. Active music and fine duet material, with banjo, piano, guitar and fiddle equally sharing lead. If you work with another caller or not give it a whirl! Figure: Hds(Sds) Promenade 1/2, Lead Right, Circle To A Line, Lines Go Forward & Back, Pass The Ocean, Men Circ., Ladies Trade, Swing Thru, Boys Run, Tag The Line, Girls Turn Back & Swing and Promenade! SD-252 More Vic Kaaria Very mellow, a good crooner's piece with excellent singing opportunities in the opener, break and closer. More music reminiscent of the 60's & 70's. Figure: *Uses the Standard Figure. GMP-207 A Kind Of Hush Mike Bramlett Nice recognizable GMP stock. It's fun to see music from the likes of Herman's Hermits from the 60's show up on a SD label. Good "singing" material and easily recognizable for any of us who grew up in the 1960's. A great example of how square dance music can cross over into and use many, many types, styles and forms of music. I liked the timing choice and the Big Band strings and horns in the background. Figure: Hds(Sds) Square thru 4, Make a Right Hand Star and turn it once, Head (,Side) Men Reverse Flutterwheel, Pick up a girl & Sweep 1/4 more, Back out at Home, Sides(Hds) Square Thru 4, Corner Swing and Prom!

K-1333 Mean Woman With The Green Eyes Bill Peters Although your reviewer was not familiar with this music, in this adaptation I found good quality instrumentation, a good mix of lead instruments making for a quaint sounding dbde-style, bluesy tune. Figure: Hds(Sds) Promenade 1/2, R&L Thru, Sds(Hds) Square Thru 4, All Do Sa Do, Do an Eight Chain 4, Corner Swing and Prom! CRC-110 Right Or Wrong Matt Worley Crown Records has established itself quickly this year with some fine music. Clean sounding, with definable melody lines that don't get lost in an electronic track, this music charges right along with bright music and mournful, but meaningful lyrics. Any CRC Releases are a good bet so far. Figure: Hds(Sds) Promenade 1/2, R&L Thru, Square Thru 4, Do Sa Do, Touch 1/4, Centers Trade, Centers Trade Again, Corner Swing and Promenade! DR-75 Alabama Woman Bill Reynolds This reviewer is not familiar with the original piece from which this SD music was adapted. The music is rhythmically brisk with banjo, guitar and harmonica leads and a rolling snare drum beat keeping things on the move. Figure: Hds(Sds) Promenade 1/2, Square Thru 4, R&L Thru, Veer Le ft and Couples Circulate, Ladies Scoot Back, Boys Fold, Corner Suring and Promenade! CC-52 The More That I Cried (Gone, Gone, Gone) Richard R. Brewer This is a piece that sort of grows on you after you listen to it several times. Leads change back and forth between horns with a south of the border flavor, banjo, a rather strident guitar and banjo. Solid bass and percussion set the pace. Good music, give it a listen. Figure: Hds(Sds) Promenade 1/2, Square Thru 4, R&L Thru, Pass Thru, Trade By, Touch 1/4, Scoot Back Corner Swing and Prom.!

44 American Square Dance, July 1998 BM-1017 Banjo Boomer / Swinging Bill Bailey Hoedown You gotta love two sided hoedown records-they always provide value and choice. Hoedowns with a called side give one side of hopefully usable music and one side of material you had better try in a workshop setup before using this choreo at an open. "Banjo Boomer" uses a solid banjo pickin' lead with a stand up bass to set the pace. The drums take a back seat to these two instruments to prove a very traditional feeling hoedown. "Swinging Bill Bailey" heads in another direction with guitars and a boom chucka beat for the feet. Both pieces are active rhythmically. Your reviewer preferred "Banjo Boomer." 138-2445 Ready Johnnie Wykoff For the last few years I have really been enjoying Blue Star music. For electronic music, it has matured well and has managed to loose that unnatural feel that some electronically produced pieces have. This music is pleasant, but energetic and allows the caller to be part of the instrumentation. Give it a listen and you'll see what I mean. Figure: Hds(Sds) Touch 1/4, Walk & Dodge, Swing Thru, Boys Run, Ferris Wheel, Centers Spread, All 8 Pass Thru, Half Tag, Ladies Trade, All 8 Circulate once and a 1/2, Corner Swing & Promenade! SG-606 Down On The Corner Dean Dederman More 60's music this month. This one is from an old Creedence Clearwater Revival tune. Background vocals are cut in on the tags. Callers will probably need to turn the speed on the music up to 47-48 RPM. They will then have a better working piece of music. Melody is faithful to the original tune. 46 American Square Dance, July 1995 CALLERLAB Understanding the Traffic Pattern Instead VIEWPOINTS of Total Memory by Wayne Morvent Many callers use Sight Calling to manage their choreography only because they feel their memory is not strong enough to memorize modules. More often than not this is also a lack of programming. The caller has no idea what he is going to do when he gets up to call. I call this "calling without a purpose." The caller simply calls a number of movements, then takes a break. This does not provide for an interesting dance, and often causes "stop and go" dancing. the routines. This month I have a ditty of a dance for all genders and ages. It is good for one- night stands and parties, and requires almost no teaching of any movements. The dance is called "The Kingston Flyer." The formation for the dance consists of two lines of dancers facing each other. The purest will want the men in a line on the callers right, women on the left. For a typical fun or party night, mixing the gender in the line really doesn't matter that much. The line should not be more than 7 dancers long. Intro: The dancers in the line on the callers left are l's, those on the right are 2's. To begin all the dancers face up toward the caller. Al; l's CROSS OVER IN FRONT OF THE 2's, GO DOWN OUTSIDE OF THE 2's, CROSS BACK OVER AT THE BOTTOM, COME BACK TO STARTING PLACE. (16) A2; 2's CROSS IN FRONT OF THE l's, GO DOWN OUTSIDE TO FOOT, CROSS OVER AND COME BACK TO PLACE (16) Bl; * FIRST COUPLE JOIN 2 HANDS, SASHAY DOWN CENTER (8) * SASHAY BACK TO PLACE (8) face up B2; SAME COUPLE SEPARATE GO DOWN OUTSIDE TO FOOT (8) EVERYBODY 2 HAND TURN OPPOSITE, end facing up (8) This completes the dance and repeats until all 7 couples have had their turn. The number 7 was chosen since that equals once through the record. Longer lines will require resetting the record which most dancers won't object to doing it more than once. It can be fun if you switch who goes first somewhere during the dance. The "*" indicates where everyone can sing the chorus of the song . . . which is North N.Y. Caller School "Mickey Mouse Mickey Mouse, (spelled) m ick ey mous e." Music for the dance July 1 - 5, 1995 is of course the Stampede recording SR 601 of Mickey Mouse. SUMMER IS IN FULL SWING Fr he summer of 1998 has been a really enjoyable time so far. We have been privileged to meet new friends and dance with some really good dancers. The common thing that we have found is that they are all concerned about teaching classes and where the new dancers are coming from. True, they can teach in a night but to have really good dancers for competition and conventions they recommend formal classes. To have classes they have to recruit and are having a hard time doing this. I keep telling them that if they find a solution let me know because we have a lot of people who would like the answer to this problem. It seems like people just don't want to take the time. This months dance is a nice summer one. Have fun! I especially enjoy dancing this routine in it's traditional routine, but if you wish a little levity and a little more action for all of the dancers, the dance can be danced as a duple minor. In fact, what I do rather frequently is, begin the dance as a triple minor and as the dance progresses begin to change it to a duple minor. It is fun to see the dance change as more people become involved.%
