The programme was subsequently expanded to include evaluations of carcinogenic risks associated with exposures to complex mixtures, life-style factors and biological agents, as well as those in specific occupations. The objective of the programme is to elaborate and publish in the form of monographs critical reviews of data on carcinogenicity for agents to which humans are known to be exposed and on specific exposure situations; to evaluate these data in terms of human risk with the help of international working groups of experts in chemical carcinogenesis and related fields; and to indicate where additional research efforts are needed. Inclusion of an agent in the Monographs does not imply that it is a carcinogen, only that the published data have been examined. Equally, the fact that an agent has not yet been evaluated in a monograph does not mean that it is not carcinogenic. After 120 min of gastric digestion, the levels of glucoraphanin, sinigrin, and gluconapin decreased, and no glucoerucin or glucobrasscin was detected. However, a concomitant increase in the glucosinolate hydrolysis products allyl nitrile, 3-butenyl isothiocyanate, phenylacetonitrile, and sulforaphane was observed. This trend continued through intestinal digestion. After 120 min, the levels of allyl nitrile, 3-butenyl isothiocyanate, phenylacetonitrile, and sulforaphane were 88.19 ± 5.85, 222.15 ± 30.26, 129.17 ± 17.57, and 13.71 ± 0.62 pmol/g fresh weight, respectively. Intestinal digesta were then applied to Caco-2 cell monolayers to assess the bioavailability.

Biomass properties (e.g. dry weight %, daily growth index), glucosinolate content (analyzed by liquid chromatography-electronspray ionization-mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/MS)), isothiocyanate and nitrile content (analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS)), myrosinase (on-gel detection) and horseradish peroxidase enzyme patterns (on-gel detection and spectrophotometry), and morphological features were examined with multi-variable statistical analysis. In addition to the several positive and negative correlations, the most outstanding phenomenon was many parameters of the hairy root clones showed dependence on the organ of origin. Among others, the daily growth index, sinigrin, glucobrassicin, 3-phenylpropionitrile, indole-3-acetonitrile and horseradish peroxidase values showed significantly higher levels in horseradish hairy root cultures initiated from leaf blades.

SUMMARY Glucosinolates (alkyl aldoxime-O-sulphate esters with a β-D-thioglucopyranoside group) occur in important oil- and protein-rich agricultural crops, including among others Brassica napus (rapeseed of Canola), B. campestris (turnip rape) and Sinapis alba (white mustard), all belonging to the plant family of Brassicaceae. They are present in all parts of these plants, with the highest concentrations often found in seeds. Several of these Brassica species are important feed ingredients and some species are also commonly used in human nutrition such as cauliflower, cabbages, broccoli and Brussels sprouts. So, this study aim to isolate the glucosinolates of both Carrichtera annua L.(DC) (CA) and Farsetia aegyptia Turra (FA) belonging to Crucifereae family. The total Gls. were isolated from the aqueous methanolic extract of both plants and further puried on acidic aluminum oxide column. Some of the obtained Gls. was identied as it is using different spectroscopic measurements (UV, NMR and MS) and the rest were hydrolyzed using myrosinase enzyme to the corresponding isothiocyanates (ITC) which were identied by GC/MS. only one glucosinolate was identied in CA as: 4-methylthio-3-butenyl Gls ( MTBG). through chromatographic and spectroscopic measurements in addition to 6-methyl sulfonylhexyl isothiocyanates(ITC), while 6-methyl sulfonyl-6-hydroxy hexyl ITC, 4-pentenyl ITC, 3-Methylthio propyl ITC, 5- hydroxy pentyl ITC and 4-methylsulphinyl butyl ITC from FA.
