2 GAME NO. 5 VS. AZUSA PACIFIC CENTRAL WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY 2014 FOOTBALL GAME NOTES

CWU NOTES WILDCATS SET SPECIAL TEAMS RECORD, WIN GNAC SPECIAL TEAMS AWARD The Wildcats recorded a feat that, likely, will never be exceeded—or even matched—in the team’s 63-7 victory over Simon Fraser at the Battle for the Border, presented by the Washington National Guard. Defensive back Cedrique Chaney (6-0, 197, Jr., Kelso) had a hand, literally, in back-to-back Clan punts that were blocked and returned for touchdowns. He swatted the first kick that wide receiver Austin Pernell (5-9, 200, Fr., Kent) recovered and took in for a 20-yard score. Just 99-second later in the first quarter, he followed that up with a five-yard, blocked-punt recovery for a TD. It marked the first time in the history of GNAC football, which dates back to 2001, that a team has returned two punts for scores in the same game. For his efforts, Chaney was selected as the GNAC Special Teams Player of the Week. Chaney was the 2012 GNAC Freshman of the Year and has been an all-conference honoree each of his seasons with the Wildcats.

AND A GNAC HONORABLE MENTION PLAYER OF THE WEEK That was Greg Logan (5-10, 181, Sr. Graham-Graham-Kapowsin), who made eight grabs for 167 yards in the Battle for the Border victory, including his first scoring grab of the year. With his 30 catches this season, Logan is No. 14 this week nationally in reception per game. His 456-receiving yards are the 13th highest total in the country.

STELL STEALS THE SHOW True freshman Deion Stell (5-10, 166, Marysville-Marysville-Pilchuck) equaled a school record on Saturday—a school TEAM record. Stell came up with his first two collegiate interceptions, which he returned for 112 total yards, which included a 78-yard touchdown return. His individual interception return yardage tied the school team mark set in a 29-21 loss at Dixie State in 2012, which included a 100-yard pick six by Kevin Puckett. Stell’s 78-yard TD return was the fifth longest in school history. He was also named an honorable mention GNAC player of the week

UP AND GOOD, AS USUAL Sophomore kicker Sean McDonald (6-1,158, Sammamish-Skyline) was busy Saturday, connecting on nine consecutive extra points. He’s now perfect in 21 attempts this season. He hasn’t missed since converting on 2-of-3 in his first game last year as a true freshman. He has made 50 in a row, the fourth longest streaks in GNAC history. The longest string of made PATs is held by former Wildcat great Garrett Rolsma, who connected on 99 in a row between 2007-09. McDonald’s now halfway to what would be a new conference record.

WELCOME BACK, ISHMAEL Playing in his first game of the 2014 season Saturday, running back Ishmael Stinson (5-11, 200, Sr., Gig Harbor-Charles Wright Academy) led all ground gainers, carrying the ball 11 times for 117 yards and a touchdown. Stinson had his best rushing day as a Wildcat against SFU in Burnaby, B.C. back in 2010, when he ran for 154 yards on 21 carries with a touchdown.

TODD’S TOTAL NOW 2,000+ Speaking of toting the pigskin, Jordan Todd quietly went over the 2,000-yard career rushing mark against SFU. Including the 59 yards he recorded again the Clan, Todd now sits at 2,022 yards. To put Todd’s mark in perspective, Pat Patterson rushed for 2,063 yards—in a single season—in 1989. Even so, Todd is quickly moving up the all-time school rushing list, where he is now No. 8, and just 86 yards away from sixth. Dan Murphy holds the school record, of 3,628 yards, which he set between 1996-99.

SANCHEZ=SACK Defensive end Tovar Sanchez (6-4, 230, Jr., Seattle-Ingraham) leads the GNAC, and is seventh ntionally in NCAA Division II, in sacks with five-and-a-half. He has already eclipsed the 4 1/2 sacks he recorded during the 2013 campaign and he has 12 for his career, which is tied for No. 20 in school history. With 24 career sacks, Jacob Galloway, who played from 2001-04, holds the school record. With 15 sacks total, CWU is No. 9 nationally, as a team, in that category. Sanchez is wearing the No. 44 this season, which is awarded annually to the Wildcat defensive player who is judged to exemplify the high standards of the CWU defense: dedication, toughness, discipline and tenacity. The player who wore the jersey the previous season awards it. Sanchez is the seventh Wildcat to wear the number following nose tackle Mitch Reffett (2008), linebackers Buddy Wood (2009) and Adam Bighill (2010), nose tackle Mike Reno (2011), linebacker John Koopman (2012) and safety Stan Langlow (2013).

ON THE ROAD AGAIN Next Saturday, the Wildcats travel to Rapid City, S.D. for their first-ever meeting with the Hardrockers of South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.
