Wednesday, February 28, 2018 News-Leader / Fernandina Beach, Florida Lady Pirates beat FSU, punch ticket to state BETH JONES News-Leader

The Lady Pirates are in Lakeland for the Class 5A Final Four. They take on Lake Highland Prep out of Orlando at 2 p.m. today in a semifinal matchup in the George Jenkins Arena at the RP Funding Center in Lakeland. The winner will take on the Oxbridge Academy-Cardinal Gibbons victor in the final on Thursday. All four teams are regional champs. The Fernandina Beach High School girls basketball team (26-4) defeated Florida State University School 72-58 in Tallahassee Friday night in the Region 1-5A title game, avenging last year’s loss. The Lady Seminoles won by eight in overtime, denying the Lady Pirates a trip to the Final Four last season. FBHS would not be denied again. “We got down by 11 early, but we kept our composure,” Coach Jacob Nantz said. “Just kept following the game plan, and it worked. We walked through things in practice the day before and executed it very well. It kept us in a position to win.” The Lady Pirates trailed the host Seminoles by seven after a quarter, but rebounded to take a seven-point lead by halftime. FBHS led by 17 after three quarters. “There was a point in the SPECIAL game that we realized that they The Lady Pirates celebrate their regional championship over FSU high school Friday night in Tallahassee.
