La Santa Sede JUAN PABLO II AUDIENCIA GENERAL Miércoles 24 de mayo de 1995 1. Hoy deseo dedicar la habitual catequesis del miércoles a la visita pastoral que he realizado del 20 al 22 de mayo a Praga y Olomouc, en la República Checa, y a Skoczów, Bielsko-Biala y Zywiec, en Polonia. Como se ve, me he detenido en Bohemia y Moravia, y la última ciudad que visité desde la que volví a Roma, fue Ostrava, en Moravia. Creo que la importancia de este viaje se comprende a la luz del documento "Tertio millennio adveniente". La Iglesia, mientras se prepara para el jubileo del año 2000, vuelve en cierto sentido a los diferentes caminos por los que Cristo entró en la vida de la gran familia humana, en los diversos continentes y en cada uno de los países. Uno de esos caminos para la Europa central pasa, de modo particular, por la Puerta de Moravia. Allí el cristianismo llegó muy pronto, echando raíces en el siglo noveno entre los eslavos del reino de la gran Moravia. Fue precisamente el príncipe de ese Estado quien invitó a los santos Cirilo y Metodio, que procedían de Bizancio, a evangelizar a su pueblo. Esa evangelización ha producido frutos especialmente en el territorio en que se realizó la visita papal. Centro de la visita que pude llevar a cabo en 1990 después de la caída del régimen comunista, fue la ciudad de Velehrad en Moravia, en el territorio de la actual archidiócesis de Olomouc. El nombre Puerta de Moravia es muy sugestivo. Nos recuerda ante todo que como dice el Evangelio, Cristo es la puerta de las ovejas (cf. -

The Catholic Church in the Czech Republic Dear Readers, The publication on the Ro- man Catholic Church which you are holding in your hands may strike you as history that belongs in a museum. How- ever, if you leaf through it and look around our beauti- ful country, you may discover that it belongs to the present as well. Many changes have taken place. The history of the Church in this country is also the history of this nation. And the history of the nation, of the country’s inhabitants, always has been and still is the history of the Church. The Church’s mission is to serve mankind, and we want to fulfil Jesus’s call: “I did not come to be served but to serve.” The beautiful and unique pastoral constitution of Vatican Coun- cil II, the document “Joy and Hope” begins with the words: “The joys and the hopes, the grief and the anxieties of the men of this age, especially those who are poor or in any way afflicted, these are the joys and hopes, the grief and anxieties of the followers of Christ.” This is the task that hundreds of thousands of men and women in this country strive to carry out. According to expert statistical estimates, approximately three million Roman Catholics live in our country along with almost twenty thousand of our Eastern broth- ers and sisters in the Greek Catholic Church, with whom we are in full communion. There are an additional million Christians who belong to a variety of other Churches. Ecumenical cooperation, which was strengthened by decades of persecution and bullying of the Church, is flourishing remarkably in this country. -

© 2010 Nelly Matova PETR EBEN’S ORATORIO APOLOGIA SOKRATUS (1967) AND BALLET CURSES AND BLESSINGS (1983): AN INTERPRETATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE SYMBOLISM BEHIND THE TEXT SETTINGS AND MUSICAL STYLE BY NELLY MATOVA DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in Music with a concentration in Choral Music in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2010 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Donna Buchanan, Chair Professor Sever Tipei Assistant Professor David Cooper Assistant Professor Ricardo Herrera ABSTRACT The Czech composer Petr Eben (1927-2007) has written music in all genres except symphony, but he is highly recognized for his organ and choral compositions, which are his preferred genres. His vocal works include choral songs and vocal- instrumental works at a wide range of difficulty levels, from simple pedagogical songs to very advanced and technically challenging compositions. This study examines two of Eben‘s vocal-instrumental compositions. The oratorio Apologia Sokratus (1967) is a three-movement work; its libretto is based on Plato‘s Apology of Socrates. The ballet Curses and Blessings (1983) has a libretto compiled from numerous texts from the thirteenth to the twentieth centuries. The formal design of the ballet is unusual—a three-movement composition where the first is choral, the second is orchestral, and the third combines the previous two played simultaneously. Eben assembled the libretti for both compositions and they both address the contrasting sides of the human soul, evil and good, and the everlasting fight between them. This unity and contrast is the philosophical foundation for both compositions. -

NATIONALISTIC TENDENCIES IN THE SLOVAK ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH1 by Frans Hoppenbrouwers Frans Hoppenbrouwers (*1962) is a Roman Catholic Church historian. He is secretary of studies of the Dutch Roman Catholic relief organisation Communicantes. INTRODUCTION After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the eclipse of the communist regimes that followed it, nationalistic tendencies2 apparently revived throughout Central and Eastern Europe. Appearances can deceive and so they did. It is clear now that nationalistic thinking was fostered throughout the communist era. Even the state itself contributed to that. Nationalism finally became manifest in the 1980’s, during the Perestroika period. It preceded the 1989 turnover as well as the resurgence of a number of states that had lost their existence after World War II or even before that, e.g. -

My experiences from this stay in the milieu of the Evangelical Church of the Czech Brethren in then Communist Czechoslovakia laid the foundation for my involvement with many contacts on the church level in this country and the Netherlands. The lectures of Amedeo Molnár awakened my interest in the history of fourteenth-century Bohemia and especially in the preacher Milicius de Chremsir. When in 1993 the Dean of the Faculty Jakub Trojan offered me the possibility to do research in Prague, I gratefully started work on this project. The organizational framework of my study was established as a result of vivid co-operation between the Theological Faculties of Prague and Amsterdam. A stipend from the Dutch Reformed Church enabled the study to take place, for which I express many thanks. -

Contemporary Composed Music in the Czech Republic
CONTEMPORARY COMPOSED MUSIC IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC ENSEMBLES FESTIVALS CONCERT SERIES What is happening in the field of contemporary composed music in the Czech Republic? You hold in your hand a publication whose aim is to answer this question by presenting the work of those who make these activities possible and push them forward: on the one hand, ensembles focused on contemporary music, on the other, festivals, concert series, organisers and associations. We tried to approach everyone on the Czech scene for whom contemporary notated music is, if not at the centre of their attention, then at least an important part of their activities. All the responses were positive, for which we are very grateful. The presentations are ordered alphabetically, with the same space for everyone: one page in Czech and English. The texts were polished by our editors, but the content of each individual contribution was left up to the discretion of the individual subjects – everyone said what they wanted Deadline: August 2017.
