The faunistic study of the family Phoridae carried out in northwestern of Iran during 2013–2017. Five species (Conicera tibialis Schmitz, Received: 1925, Dohrniphora cornuta (Bigot, 1857), Gymnophora arcuata (Meigen, 1830), 06 August, 2018 Metopina oligoneura (Mik, 1867) and Triphleba intermedia (Malloch, 1908)) are newly recorded from Iran. Email: [email protected], [email protected] Abstract Two new genera and species, Tapantia bicasa and Tayrona nitifrons, are described from Tapanti National Park, Costa Rica, and Tayrona National Park, Colombia, respectively. Tapantia bicasa is a basal lineage phorid of uncertain relationships, as it structurally resembles the genus Triphleba Rondani, but has male terminalia extremely similar to those of Dohrniphora Dahl. Tayrona niti- frons is highly unusual in many aspects, but especially in frontal setation, leg structure, wing struc- ture, and male terminalia. It is classified in the subfamily Metopininae, although its precise relationships are unknown. Key words: Diptera, Phoridae, new genus, Neotropical Introduction The phorid fauna of the Neotropical Region is still poorly known, but presumably the most diverse in the world. Recent revisionary papers by Brown (e.g. 1996, 1997, 2000, 2002, 2004) have documented huge numbers of undescribed Neotropical species, with many more expected in nearly all groups. Even less well-described is the diversity at the genus level. This is in part because of difficulties in resolving the subfamily level classification of the family (Brown 1992; Dis- ney 2003) and classifying the genera of subfamily Metopininae. Especially problematic are the Metopina-group of genera (sensu Brown 1992) and the large, probably paraphyl- etic genus Megaselia Rondani and its relatives. -

This subprogram aims to create impact through different lines of action research, including (i) developing and testing scalable RRR business models, (ii) assessing and mitigating risks from RRR for public health and the environment, (iii) supporting public and private entities with innovative approaches for the safe reuse of wastewater and organic waste, and (iv) improving rural-urban linkages and resource allocations while minimizing the negative urban footprint on the peri-urban environment. This subprogram works closely with the World Health Organization (WHO), Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), United Nations University (UNU), and many national and international partners across the globe. Marshall This thesis has two parts. The first part investigates the relationships between the Archiceroptera genus complex and other members of the Limosininae (Diptera: Sphaeroceridae). A focus is placed on the relationships within the larger epandrial process group, which contains Bitheca, Bromeloecia, Pterogramma, Aptilotella, and Robustagramma, along with Archiceroptera, Rudolfina and several previously unplaced species groups. Molecular and morphological data sets provide the first phylogeny of the group, and were used to support the inclusion of several unplaced species groups within Rudolfina and Archiceroptera, while one new genus is described. Pectinosina gen. nov. includes two species: P. prominens (Duda), previously placed in Rudolfina, and P. carro n. sp. The second part of the thesis deals with revisions of Archiceroptera Papp and Rudolfina Roháček. Rudolfina now includes 13 described species, nine of which are newly described here (R. bucki, R. exuberata, R. howdeni, R. megepandria, R. pauca, R. pilosa, R. newtoni, R. remiforma, and R. tumida). This study features the endophagous insect community in reproductive aroid structures of a tropical rainforest of Mexico, and the shifting that occurs along an altitudinal gradient and among different hosts. In three sites of the Los Tuxtlas Biosphere Reserve in Mexico, we surveyed eight aroid species over a yearly cycle. The insects found were reared in the laboratory, quantified and identified. Data were analyzed through species interaction networks. We recorded 34 endophagous species from 21 families belonging to four insect orders. The community was highly specialized at both network and species levels. Along the altitudinal gradient, there was a reduction in richness and a high turnover of species, while the assemblage among hosts was also highly specific, with different dominant species. -

This increase in the consumption will demand enormous resources, the feed being the most challenging because of the limited availability of natural resources, ongoing climatic changes and food-feed-fuel competition. The costs of conventional feed resources such as soymeal and fishmeal are very high and moreover their availability in the future will be limited. Insect rearing could be a part of the solutions. Although some studies have been conducted on evaluation of insects, insect larvae or insect meals as an ingredient in the diets of some animal species, this field is in infancy. Here we collate, synthesize and discuss the available information on five major insect species studied with respect to evaluation of their products as animal feed. The nutritional quality of black soldier fly larvae, the house fly maggots, mealworm, locusts- grasshoppers-crickets, and silkworm meal and their use as a replacement of soymeal and fishmeal in the diets of poultry, pigs, fish species and ruminants are discussed. The crude protein contents of these alternate resources are high: 42 to 63% and so are the lipid contents (up to 36% oil), which could possibly be extracted and used for various applications including biodiesel production. -

Wiesenborn1 ABSTRACT.—Phoradendron juniperinum (Viscaceae) is a dioecious, parasitic plant of juniper trees ( Juniperus [Cupressaceae]) that occurs from eastern California to New Mexico and into northern Mexico. The species produces minute, spherical flowers during early summer. Dioecious flowering requires pollinating insects to carry pollen from male to female plants. I investigated the pollination of P. juniperinum parasitizing Juniperus osteosperma trees in the Cerbat Mountains in western Arizona during June–July 2016. I examined pollen from male flowers, aspirated insects from female flowers, counted conspecific pollen grains on insects, and estimated floral constancy from proportions of conspecific pollen in pollen loads. -

This complex, as currently redefined, is composed of the longicornis cluster (D. longicornis, D. pachuca, D. propachuca, and D. mainlandi), the ritae cluster (D. desertorum, D. mathisi, and D. ritae), and several miscellaneous species (D. hamatofila, D. hexastigma, D. spenceri, and an undescribed species “from Sonora”). A maximum likelihood inference also includes the huckinsi cluster (D. huckinsi and D. huichole) as the most distant members in the longicornis complex, a condition not recovered using maximum parsimony. We were unable to diagnose species in the triad of sibling species D. longicornis, D. pachuca, and D. propachuca using rapidly evolving mitochondrial DNA data, and we discuss possible species concept conflict for this triad.
