CHILD SAFEGUARDING POLICY STATEMENT OF THE DIOCESE OF GALWAY, KILMACDUAGH and KILFENORA As a constituent member of the Catholic Church in Ireland, we recognise and uphold the dignity and rights of all children, are committed to ensuring their safety and well-being, and will work in partnership with parents/guardians to do this. We recognise each child as a gift from God, and we value and encourage the participation of children in all activities that enhance their spiritual, physical, emotional, intellectual and social development. All Church personnel (including clergy, religious, staff and volunteers) have a responsibility to safeguard children through promoting their welfare, health and development in a safe and caring environment that supports their best interests and prevents abuse. Father Peyton Cluster Newsletter The Parishes of Attymass, Bonniconlon, Foxford, Killasser and Straide together on Mission. Issue No. 10 August 2013 Habemus Papam! Congratulations Jubilarians! In 1988 there were three priests ordained for the Diocese of Achonry and coincidentally, 25 years later, all three are working together in the Fr Peyton Cluster. Fr Martin Convey was ordained in Killasser, Fr John Durkan in Swinford and Fr John Geelan in Cloonloo. The end of year Mass for our cluster in the Fr Peyton Centre was a special Mass of thanksgiving for their vocation to the priesthood and for their work in our Diocese. We heartily congratulate all three, we thank them for their 25 years of service to the church and and we pray God’s blessings in abundance on their future ministry. The announcement of the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI in February this year came as a surprise to most Catholics throughout the world and the election of Jorge Mario Bergoglio, a 76 year old Jesuit from Buenos Aires, was equally unexpected. From what we know of his life so far and from his first few months in office we can say that the choice was a good one. Already he has been called the “no frills” pope with a simpler approach to the papal office, choosing to live in the guesthouse at the Vatican rather than in the official residence and to wear an ordinary white cassock rather than the ornate robes worn by his predecessors. During his life we are told that he was noted for his humility and his commitment to the poor.

Dear Parishioners, brother Priests and Deacons, Religious and Friends, Covid-19: A Year On This week we mark the first anniversary of the appearance of the COVID-19 pandemic in Ireland. As we consider how this has touched our parish communities, particularly given the tragic loss of so many lives, we wish to share some thoughts with you, the people of the six Dioceses of the Tuam Province. Further to Climb Many of us will be familiar with the experience of arriving at what we thought was the top of a mountain only to discover that there is still further to climb. Sometimes the last bit can be the hardest of all. We understand the experience of disappointment and frustration that many people feel, at the news of an indefinite extension of lockdown. We are delighted, however, that children have the opportunity to return to school and we wish them and their teachers every blessing. Until we are all “OK” All of us appreciate the efforts and the sacrifices of those in our community who provide essential services. For many people, however, the continued high level of restriction poses practical and emotional challenges. We want to say very clearly that, in the Christian vision of things, every person is essential and no person is more important or necessary than any other. When we pray the Stations of the Cross, we celebrate people like Veronica, who wiped the face of Jesus and Simon of Cyrene who shared with Him the burden of the cross. None of us can say “I’m ok” until we are all “ok”.

There’s some strange stuff in today’s Gospel. Jesus, an unmarried 30-year-old, unlettered carpenter very forwardly starts to teach in his local synagogue. From his listeners’ stunned reaction it must have been his first time to do so. You’d expect them to be indignant at his self-promoting posturing in the synagogue, as they’d see it, and to sneer at what he says. But no! They’re impressed, amazed even, at his wisdom. In fact, so impressed are they that they just can’t believe it. They can’t get their head around the fact that someone like him - an ordinary Joe Soap of a carpenter - could have so much more than they have. Jealousy rears its ugly head, and instead of opening their minds to his wisdom they close their hearts to his person. That’s not all. He could do no deed of power there except to cure some people who were sick. They distanced themselves from him and would not allow him to work the miracle: personal transformation. What this episode shows is that knowing about Jesus is not enough. We have to know him for the wonder to work. The miracle of transformation is a two-way thing: God and man at work together.
