28 APRIL 2019 THE GLOBAL NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR INTERVIEW

ITTLE are we aware that, often in life, our very fears are capable enough to bring out our greatest strengths to limelight. Only in L the face of the mightiest obstacles can we discover our fortes. Life is full of ups and downs, and there really is no man who can outwardly claim that By Sandy D life for him has been a bed full of roses. Consequently, it Grade 11, ICEC is wise to keep in mind that the most beautiful flowers MoHT: Showcasing unique culture, way of life, traditions on have concealed underlying pricks and thorns. Indeed, it is wistful thinking to wish for a life free from hardships. However, “Sweet are the uses of adversity, which, like the toad, ugly and venomous, wears yet a precious jewel in its head,” and so the great playwright William Shakespeare had suggested. One can firmly say that dreadful they may be, adversities actually turn out to be blessings in disguise. In Darwin’s theory of evolution, it is stated that there takes place a struggle for existence, and through the process of ‘survival of the fittest’, the dominating party of our planet is ultimately determined. Surely, a man is who he can be due to the difficulties he has duly encountered and overcome. Perhaps, if he were to give up midway, he would only be left with the bitter taste of defeat as a result. Who doesn’t experience the setbacks in life? Rather, these innu- merous failures are simply stepping stones for those bound to grasp higher success. People are not famous for trifling matters. The world’s heroes are born out of trials of adversity. Take Abraham Lincoln, Myanmar to the world; raising living standards of people Mahatma Gandhi and General Aung San for instance. Lincoln was shot dead, Gandhi was assassinated and the same goes for General Aung San. However, they become martyrs that will forever be ingrained in the hearts of their nations and the world. Undeniably, these so-called adversities give us yet an- other chance to try. Being intellectual creatures, humans learn from their mistakes. They battle against the odds and strive forward. Take a look at Japan! A country that had gone through tremendous effects of the Second World War is now brimming with prosperity. Through much blood and PAGE-8,9 Pull-outtears, sweat and sacrifices, Japan is no longer is a small supplement nation at the mercy of the World War and has become an affluent country with a main say in the development of today’s global affairs. What of the island-country Singapore? It really is wonderous how in a matter of decades, Singapore has changed into one of the most influential nations in the world. In days of prosperity and pleasure, we are inclined to remain ignorant of these struggles. Peaceful moments are also as fleeting as they come. True tranquility is established once one stands steadfast to their principles and fearlessly undertakes this great tribulation. After bright days come dark ones. Naturally, a gloomy sky promises a colorful rainbow when the shower has come to pass. A will is eternal. No mountain is too tall to overcome. Let us turn the tides and live gloriously!

28 APRIL 2019 NEXT GENERATION PLATFORM THE GLOBAL NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR

ITTLE are we aware that, often in life, our very fears are capable enough to bring out our greatest strengths to limelight. Only in L the face of the mightiest obstacles can we discover our fortes. Life is full of ups and downs, and By Sandy D there really is no man who can outwardly claim that Grade 11, ICEC life for him has been a bed full of roses. Consequently, it is wise to keep in mind that the most beautiful flowers have concealed underlying pricks and thorns. Take Abraham Lincoln, Mahatma Gandhi and General Aung San for instance. Through much blood and tears, sweat and sacrifices, Japan is no longer is a small nation at the mercy of the World War and has become an affluent country with a main say in the development of today’s global affairs. 28 APRIL 2019 2 EDUCATION THE GLOBAL NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR

OWS of toddy palm trees or toddy forests are a symbol of the beauty and serenity of the rural life of Anyar (Upper Myanmar). Kyaukpadaung, a town R close to the Mt. According to statistics from 20 years ago, there were over 7,100 farmers and their families relying on the tod- dy-palm trees for their livelihoods. The hard work and less lucrative business has resulted in declining number of toddy farmers, reaching just about 1,200 in the town today. Why? A whole family of toddy farmers had to work for eight months per year. That means they had no jobs in the rainy season. By Kyal Sin Phu 2nd Year Honours Student (English Specialization) CCORDING to Oxford Advanced Learner' Dictionary, University of Yangon Literature is defined as `` pieces of writings that are valued as works of art, especially novels, plays and A poems (in contrast to technical books and newspapers and magazines, etc.). Many people tend to assume that reading books of knowledge is more fruitful than appreciating aesthetic values embedded in literary works. I used to be one of those people before my journey of majoring in English at University of Yangon. When I was young, reading literature was not my cup of tea. I used to be skeptical about the importance and values of literature. I even thought that those who are enjoying pieces of literature are wasting their precious time. Ninety-nine times out of a hundred, I used to pick up books that are thought to enrich my knowledge and assist my intellectual development. I rarely appreciated literary works, and underestimated the benefits of reading literature. As a negative consequence of not reading literature, I didn't know much about the world or human beings. So, I used to lack social skills, having no idea how to communicate with different types of people effectively. However, when I attend university specializing in English, I have to study not only English Language but also English Literature. It is compulsory for me to read English poems, proses, stories, novels and plays as part of English literature. Each and every day, I have to deal with a wide range of literary works created by different poets, novelists, authors and playwrights. I have to analyze those literary works in terms of characteriza- tion, themes, messages, moral lessons and so on. Here, in those different pieces of literature, I witness various characters with different personality traits and diverse backgrounds, their reactions towards each other, how they struggle and overcome hard- ships in life. Reading literature gives me insights into ups and downs of life as well as trials and tribulations that can be encountered in our lifetime. Furthermore, I come to understand the nature of human beings through the actions and be- haviors of the characters I come across in stories, novels and plays. Such understanding

FROM PAGE- S-5 Today, toddy palm wood is used as a substitute for other hardwoods and bamboo. Toddy palm wood is used in restaurants, tea shops and hotels, and also in village houses to erect posts, beams and bars, as a substi- tute for other hardwood. Even 70-year-old palm trees are felled for this purpose. We should find ways to improve the lives of rural folk so that we can save palm trees. (Translated by Nat Ye Hla)
