    Fernando Canovas

    FERNANDO CANOVAS Born in Argentina in 1960 to an inventor/sculptor father, it was always clear that Fernando Canovas was destined to be an artist. Impressed by the personality, originality and impeccable execution of his earliest works as a child in Buenos Aires, his teachers encouraged him to further his artistic studies in Europe or the United States. Following his arrival at L’Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, Canovas began to win accolades. He was chosen from among hundreds of applicants to study with Pierre Alechinsky and was also chosen as a student by surrealist Roberto Matta. By the beginning of his third year, Canovas was the top student at the school, and his work was coveted by many galleries who fought to represent him. In his work, he shows a deep concern about space and time. His intent is to capture them, and, as a result, his paintings emanate a strong sensation of vertigo and have a no-space, no-time feeling. In his latest spatial projects, he incorporates collage in his compositions to take the image into the three dimensional world. Renowned critics, including Bonito Oliva and Lyle Rexer, have written about his art, and his works today are part of many important collections. He currently splits his time between Buenos Aires, Paris and New York.     The percepTion of The body in dideroT's arT criTicism and in modern aesTheTics and visual arT1 by else marie bukdahl ''The landscape thinks itself in me and i am its consciousness'' paul cézanne (in merleau-ponty 1948a: 17) The french philosopher, encyclopédiste and art critic ('avant la lettre'), denis di- derot, was in many ways a precursor to contemporary theoreticians and theories of art, especially as embodied in the intertwining of spectator and art work in the modern tradition, inspired by the phenomenologist maurice merleau-ponty. in this tradition, mind and body are not separated in a cartesian cleavage; rather, the mind (including our perception of the world) is intimately related to the world that we perceive. When interacting with a work of art, we do not merely look at it, we 'enter' it, 'walk' through it, using all our senses. referring to pictorial examples and quotations from painters, sculptors, and art critics, the article epitomizes these features, by which the interactive viewer is experientially drawn into the space of the art forms as spectacularly instantiated in works by artists like barnett newman or richard serra. descartes' philosophy, which had a great impact on Western art and culture, is predicated on a separation of mind from body, much like disembodied eyes with a single perspective. an important early philosopher central to dismantling the car- tesian model and introducing the idea of embodied perception as a basis for this was maurice merleau-ponty (1908-1961). When he wrote Eye and Mind (1964)2 he instigated an important turning point in the history of the aesthetics of art.

    July 2015 Japan: Super Global High Schools The Japanese Government’s Super Global High School (SGH) project was launched in 2014, and aims “to develop leaders with international competencies”. Working with universities, industry and international organisations, SGH schools develop and implement tailored curricula for five years. SGH Associate schools will work with SGH schools to develop a broader SGH community. SGH Associate schools also develop and implement targeted educational programs for “nurturing global leaders” for one year. Students from SGH schools will be “expected to hone their communication and problem-solving skills as they tackle global issues” in concert with Japan-based universities and international organisations, industry and non-profit groups. The SGH project complements the government’s focus on internationalisation of universities – where possible, connections between SGH schools and universities are noted below. Shaping Tokyo: Land Development and Planning Practice in the Early Modern Japanese Metropolis Carola Hein Manuscript submitted to the Journal of Urban History in August 2007, revised and resubmitted March 2008. When German architect Bruno Taut drove in 1936 along the major road linking Tokyo and Yokohama, he criticized the inadequacy and superficiality of the modernizing Japanese built landscape. He later wrote about his revulsion: "I in particular had heard so much about Tokyo that I had no desire to see the city on the spot. […] In passing through the Inland Sea we had absorbed scenery of such rare beauty, had found so little of vulgar trash 1 in such buildings as could be glimpsed, that we could hardly take in the crabbed pretentiousness, the ludicrous would-be modernity of the tin façades that confronted us, could not fathom the loud hideousness of this confusion of architectural styles.

The pleasantness is stunning, and while you first notice it in the professional and gracious crew, it is not because of them. It is because of the high ratio of Japanese pas- sengers. An ancient culture of conformity, respect and ritual has begotten a modern culture of people who are unusually respectful, orderly and polite. There’s even an animated in flight video on JAL, demonstrating good flight etiquette, in- Tcluding things we’ve never done, like alerting the passenger behind you before reclining your seat. It sure makes for a pleasant cabin (as did the extra humidity and oxygen of the air on our 787 Dreamliner — that’s another story). But these same cultural forces are the ones that stunt the liberation of the Japanese LGBT community. They are at the heart of every internal Japanese conflict, an amplified expression of the conflict we all experience between holding on to the past, and growing into the future. It shouldn’t seem so foreign to us. But it does. And that’s the heart of any Japanese adventure. From its earliest interactions with Dutch and Portuguese traders, Japan has kept foreigners at a distance. And yet its rituals of hospitality are unrivaled in their intricacy and graciousness. For western travelers, a visit to Japan opens windows to both the past and the future. This is easily visible in the juxtaposition of tourist staples like tea ceremonies and bullet trains.
