Wilton Crescent Belgravia Sw1x WILTON CRESCENT BELGRAVIA SW1X AN ELEGANT GRADE II LISTED HOUSE CLOSE TO HYDE PARK AND KNIGHTSBRIDGE Wilton Crescent forms an embracing and impressive semicircle behind the north side of Belgrave Square, planned after 1821 when Thomas Cundy II took over as Surveyor to the Grosvenor Estate and built up by William Howard Seth-Smith from 1825. HISTORICAL NOTE The prime central London area of Belgravia takes its name from one of the Duke of Westminster’s subsidiary titles, Viscount Belgrave. The village of Belgrave, outside the county town of Chester, in Cheshire, is the home of the Grosvenor family’s ancestral home, Eaton Hall. Wilton Crescent was named at the time of Thomas Egerton, 2nd Earl of Wilton, second son of Robert Grosvenor, 1st Marquess of Westminster, on whose estate the road was built in 1825. Belgravia was built almost entirely on the “Five Fields”, part of the land acquired by Sir Thomas Grosvenor in 1677 on his marriage to the heiress Mary Davies. The entrepreneurial Grosvenor family, identifying a smart new district between Chelsea and Mayfair, instructed the great neoclassical and neo Gothic style architect James Wyatt RA to prepare an early plan to develop the area. Wyatt had studied in Italy and had soon become the architect of the day. In the 19th and 20th centuries, Wilton Crescent was home to many prominent British politicians, aristocrats, ambassadors and civil servants. Louis Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma (1900–1979), uncle of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, lived at 2 Wilton Crescent for many years. Today there is a blue plaque on the house marking this. Indeed Viscount Chelsea, subsequently Earl Cadogan, lived at 41 Wilton Crescent from 1842-60, as did the Earl of Kinnoull from 1860-91. Like much of Belgravia, Wilton Crescent is characterised by grand terraces with opulent stone and stucco fronted houses which are built in a crescent shape, many of them with balconies and terraces, particularly on the southern part of the crescent. The houses to the north of the crescent are stone clad and five stories high and were refaced between 1908-12. Most of the houses had originally been built in the stucco style, but such houses became stone clad during this renovation period. Other houses today have black iron balconies. There are two diplomatic buildings in Wilton Crescent: the High Commission of Singapore at No. 9, and the Embassy of Luxembourg at No. 27 (formerly home to the Luxembourgish government-in-exile).
