One major aspect of research in forensic entomology is the investigation of molecular techniques for the accurate identification of insects. Studies to date have addressed the corpse fauna of many geographical regions, but generally neglected the southern African calliphorid species. In this study, forensically significant calliphorids from South Africa, Swaziland, Botswana and Zimbabwe and Australia were sequenced over an 1167 base pair region of the COI gene. Phylogenetic analysis was performed to examine the ability of the region to resolve species identities and taxonomic relationships between species. Analyses by neigh- bour-joining, maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood methods all showed the potential of this region to provide the necessary species-level identifications for application to post-mortem interval (PMI) estimation; however, higher level taxonomic relationships did vary according to method of analysis. Intraspecific variation was also considered in relation to determining suitable maximum levels of variation to be expected during analysis. Individuals of some species in the study represented populations from both South Africa and the east coast of Australia, yet maximum intraspecific variation over this gene region was calculated at 0.8%,with minimum interspecific variation at 3%, indicating distinct ranges of variation to be expected at intra- and interspecific levels. -

In several cases the calculation of the larval age allows the estimation of the minimum Post-Mortem Interval (mPMI). A correct identification of the species is the first step for a correct mPMI estimation. To overcome the difficulties due to the morphological identification especially of the immature stages, a molecular approach can be applied. However, difficulties in separation of closely related species are still an unsolved problem. Sequences of 4 different genes (COI, ND5, EF-1α, PER) of 13 different fly species collected during forensic experiments (Calliphora vicina, Calliphora vomitoria, Lu- cilia sericata, Lucilia illustris, Lucilia caesar, Chrysomya albiceps, Phormia regina, Cyno- mya mortuorum, Sarcophaga sp., Hydrotaea sp., Fannia scalaris, Piophila sp., Megaselia scalaris) were evaluated for their capability to identify correctly the species. Three concatenated sequences were obtained combining the four genes in order to verify if longer sequences increase the probability of a correct identification. The obtained results showed that this rule does not work for the species L. caesar and L. illustris. Future works on other DNA regions are suggested to solve this taxonomic issue. Medical jurisprudence is a branch of medicine that involves the study and application of medical knowledge in the legal field. Because modern medicine is a legal creation and medico- legal cases involvingdeath, rape, paternity etc. require a medical practitioner to produce evidence and appear as an expert witness, these two fields have traditionally been inter-dependent. Forensic medicine is a narrower field that involves collection and analysis of medical evidence (samples) to produce objective information for use in the legal system. Medical jurisprudence includes: 1. questions of the legal and ethical duties of physicians; 2. questions affecting the civil rights of individuals with respect to medicine; and 3. medicolegal assessment of injuries to the person. Under the second heading there are many aspects, including (but not limited to): (a) questions of competence or sanity in civil or criminal proceedings; (b) questions of competence of minors in matters affecting their own health; and (c) questions of lawful fitness or safety to drive a motor vehicle, pilot an aeroplane, use scuba gear, play certain sports, or to join certain occupations. Under the third heading, there are also many aspects, including (but not limited to): (a) assessment of illness or injuries that may be work-related (see workers' compensation or occupational safety and health) or otherwise compensable; (b) assessment of injuries of minors that may relate to neglect or abuse; and (c) certification of death or else the assessment of possible causes of death — this is the incorrect, narrow meaning of forensic medicine as commonly understood. A Global Study of Forensically Significant Calliphorids: Implications for Identification

Dadoura Abstract A proliferation of molecular studies of the forensically significant Calliphoridae in the last decade has seen molecule-based identification of immature and damaged specimens become a routine complement to traditional morphological identification as a preliminary to the accurate estimation of post-mortem intervals (PMI), which depends on the use of species-specific developmental data. Published molecular studies have tended to focus on generating data for geographically localised communities of species of importance, which has limited the consideration of intraspecific variation in species of global distribution. This study used phylogenetic analysis to assess the species status of 27 forensically important calliphorid species based on 1167 base pairs of the COI gene of 119 specimens from 22 countries, and confirmed the utility of the COI gene in identifying most species. The species Lucilia cuprina, Chrysomya megacephala, Ch. saffranea, Ch. albifrontalis and Calliphora stygia were unable to be monophyletically resolved based on these data. Identification of phylogenetically young species will require a faster-evolving molecular marker, but most species could be unambiguously characterised by sampling relatively few conspecific individuals if they were from distant localities. Intraspecific geographical variation was observed within Ch. rufifacies and L. cuprina, and is discussed with reference to unrecognised species. 1. THE TIME OF DEATH-A LEGAL, ETHICAL AND MEDICAL DILEMMA Introduction On December 4, 1967 an amazed world learned that a South African physician, Dr. Christian Barnard, had transplanted the heart of one hopelessly injured patient into the body of another man who was dying of advanced cardiac disease.' This unprecedented operation brought the remarkable advances of medical technology over the pre- vious fifty years into sharp focus. The major medical obstacle to suc- cessful transplants had been the body's production of antibodies which reject the introduction of foreign substances into the system. 2 To fight this rejection process, medical scientists developed a substance known as antilymphocyteglobulin (ALG) .3 This substance performed excel- lently in preventing the rejection process. However, it created a new medical problem: ALG retards the production of lymphocytes which create the rejection process but lymphocytes are necessary to fight off infection in the body. This complication meant that doctors might be successful in preventing rejection of a transplanted vital organ only to 4 lose the patient to infection. -

Sarcophaga africa Wiedemann, 1824, S. inaequalis Austen, 1909, S. exuberans Pandellé, 1896 and S. tibialis Macquart, 1851 showed well-defined peaks between early October 2001 and late April 2002, and only S. africa was trapped at other times of year. These peaks occurred when average minimum and maximum ambient air temperatures were above 12°C and 22°C, respectively, and showed no obvious relationship to rainfall.
