The political conflict and activism both on and against social media platforms have become a more frequent occurrence as their user bases grow and diversify. Conflicts between users and platform operators have involved their attitudes and policies towards issues as diverse as censorship, privacy and surveillance, images depicting breastfeeding, images depicting nudity, pornography, hateful speech and threats of physical harm — with many conflicts garnering coverage in mainstream media. This project investigates conflicts in which users of social media platforms have dramatically different political views and expectations than the operators and designers of their platforms by analysing the different ways in which users have negotiated differences of power and political disputes on social media platforms in several case studies. It has highlighted regular areas of conflict or tension, the strategies that platforms use and the tactics that users deploy to negotiate these conflicts. By interrogating the power structures and political conflicts of social media platforms, this research has discovered how platform operators attempt to govern users through policy and enforcement strategies, and how users interact with platforms during conflict and by identifying themes in user actions during conflicts.

    Dear colleagues and people who care about education and academic freedom: enclosed is a regularly updated bibliography of sources documenting the ideological objectives, activities, personalities, associates, and fellow travelers ofTurning Point USA/Professor Watchlist. It includes a wide variety of organizations, names, and connections. It is a testimonial to free speech. All of its contents are publicly accessible and include web-addresses. It is organized thematically and alphabetically for easy look-up (by first name first). I make no claim to completeness, and I’m always open to additions so long as these sources are directly relevant to the compendium and are web-accessible. The best way to think of this collection is as sets of samples that aid in further research and encourage a clearer understanding of the emergence of a deeply troubling nationalistic, racist, xenophobic and misogynist movement in the United States and elsewhere. While my hope is that this compendium is of use to scholars, activists, and citizens working to preserve the democracy and resist fascism, its inclusions range from more scholarly journalistic work (for example, Politico, ProPublica, The New Republic, The New Yorker, The Atlantic, The Intercept) to well-respected news outlets such as the New York Times, the Washington Post, CNN, to far-right hit-piece machines like the Daily Caller, the Daily Wire, Brietbart, World Net Daily, the Daily Stormer, FrontPageMag, Red Ice (3Fourteen), Rebel Media, and InfoWars.

They were written off as a bunch of trolls and racists too scared to organize, and media outlets saw them as a fringe movement with little hope of growing. However, the 2016 Presidential election of Donald Trump is one of many important events the alt-right rallied behind. They are even leaving their computer screens and beginning to hold ‘free-speech’ rallies across the country. This project asks very important questions about how this has become possible.
