Fabric & Leather Grade List FABRIC & LEATHER PROGRAM GRADE LIST Updated May 20, 2020 CONTENTS General Information Davis Leather Collection Helvetia Leather Collection Tiger Leather (Soave and Tiger Leather Collection) Camira Carnegie Designtex KnollTextiles LUUM Maharam Momentum Sina Pearson from Momentum Stinson (CF Stinson) Ultrafabrics General Information: COM/COL price includes application of customer’s fabric (leather) which should be prepaid to factory address and clearly marked to indicate: 1) buyer’s name, 2) buyer’s purchase order number, 3) client, 4) furniture number of item to be covered, and 5) instructions for application, i.e. face, railroaded, reversed, etc. Furniture orders should include this same information as well as cutting instructions and a description of the fabric including pattern and color number in order to provide a cross reference and to reduce the margin of error. In the absence of specific written instructions accompanying the order, fabrics will be cut, seamed and applied at our discretion and at the customer’s risk. Davis will not purchase COM/COL materials. All orders and COM/COL materials should be sent directly to Davis Furniture Industries, Inc. Attn: COM/COL Department 2401 South College Drive High Point, NC 27260 Phone: 336-889-2009 Yardage requirements shown in price list are based on using fabric which is plain and a full 54” wide. Fabrics of narrower widths and/ or which involve matching repeats will require additional yardage. Under most of these circumstances, the following tables can be used as a guide. Collect shipments of COM fabrics will not be accepted. In the absence of specific written instructions accompanying the order, fabrics will be cut, seamed and applied at our discretion and at the customer’s risk. Napped and some velvets are usually applied without luggage stitching. While we inspect fabrics for mill imperfections, some are difficult to recognize. We cannot be responsible for defects, color inaccuracies, dye lot variations, and other flaws. We suggest that our customers inspect fabrics before furnishing them. Under no circumstances will we assume responsibility for COM/COL shortages, flaws, or other such problems. While we make a concerted effort to control COM/COL materials, it is not our responsibility to police the receipt of these materials in order to meet delivery deadlines and we assume that customers are aware of any undue delay in the delivery of their COM/COL materials. All Davis seating conforms to California #117 Bulletin for fire resistance. Many products have been tested and pass California TB 133. Please contact factory for information. Fabric Evaluation: Evaluation is required on all fabrics based on the product being specified. All fabrics on this Grade List must be evaluated. A memo sample will be required for evaluation. Please contact a Davis Customer Service Representative (336-889-2009) for information on this evaluation process and to inquire if a memo sample is already in-house. Special Finish Application: At times it is necessary to add backing or stain repellent finishes to fabrics to improve upholstery results. In these cases, additional charges could be added to product cost. These costs will be evaluated on a case by case basis. Please contact Davis Customer Service for pricing and information - 336-889-2009 Backing: Refer to each fabric specification before ordering. Backing may be required on some Davis products for proper tailoring, contact factory for specifics. If fabric is not originally backed or is only“lightly” backed from the fabric supplier additional backing charges may be incurred from Davis. Because every fabric specification is different and application for use must be taken into consideration, Davis shall not be held responsible in any manner for wrong specification of fabric, and Davis does not guarantee application, wear, durability, or light fastness of the items included in this program except where covered by supplier warranty. While it does not deny the importance of the various meanings and interpretations attached to tartan since the mid-eighteenth century, this article contends that more practical reasons for tartan’s popularity—primarily its functional and aesthetic qualities—merit greater attention. Along with evidence from contemporary newspapers and fashion manuals, this article focuses on evidence from the production and popular consumption of tartan at the turn of the nineteenth century, including its incorporation into fashionable dress and its use beyond the social elite. This article seeks to demonstrate the contemporary understanding of tartan as an attractive and useful commodity. Since the mid-eighteenth century tartan has been subjected to many varied and often confusing interpretations: it has been used as a symbol of loyalty and rebellion, as representing a fading Highland culture and heritage, as a visual reminder of the might of the British Empire, as a marker of social status, and even as a means of highlighting racial difference.

    The Journal of Dr. Tiberius Hess Librarian’s Introduction A few months ago, a longtime Hamilton resident donated a battered cloth-bound journal she discovered during a renovation. It’s a vivid story written by Dr. Tiberius Hess, a doctor who lived and practised in Hamilton during the Victorian era. In it, Hess claims to have invented a time machine, powered by electricity and steam, and governed by mysterious “nautilus gears”. He wrote of using that machine, called a “Chronocycle”, to travel to present-day Hamilton. The enigmatic Hess wrote of things far beyond the period in which he lived. Fascinating. His journal is divided into two parts. The primary section contains first-person entries about his experiences in Hamilton from 1854 - 1860, with a brief sojourn to 2019. The second section is made up of six “clue sets”. Hess claims these clues point to the location of a set of nautilus gears that he hid somewhere in Hamilton during his brief time-travel here. You can delve into those clues, and try to locate his nautilus gears, elsewhere on this website. The journal entries offer a fascinating glimpse into life in Victorian Hamilton. As befits a time traveller, Hess’s entries jump about in time, capturing his experience more as a rousing tale than a strict chronological account. They mention real historical figures such as: Isaac Buchanan, Sir Allan Napier McNab, James McFarlane and others. Hess lived through actual historic events such as the cholera outbreak of 1854, the Desjardins Canal rail disaster of 1857 and the visit to Hamilton by the Prince of Wales in 1860.

    FABRIC DICTIONARY A Absorbency- The ability of a fabric to take in moisture. Acetate- A manufactured fiber formed by compound of cellulose, refined from cotton linters and/or wood pulp, and acedic acid that has been extruded through a spinneret and then hardened. Acrylic- A manufactured fiber, its major properties include a soft, wool-like hand, machine washable and dryable and excellent color retention. Alpaca- A natural hair fiber obtained from the Alpaca sheep, a domesticated member of the llama family. Angora- The hair of the Angora goat. Also known as Angora mohair. Angora may also apply to the fur of the Angora rabbit. Antique Satin-A reversible satin-weave fabric with satin floats on the technical face and surface slubs on the technical back created by using slub-filling yarns. It is usually used with the technical back as the right side for drapery fabrics and often made of a blend of fibers. Argyle- A pattern designed with different color diamond shapes knit into a fabric. B Bamboo Fabric- Bamboo fabric is a natural textile made from the pulp of the bamboo grass. Bamboo fabric has been growing in popularity because it has many unique properties and is more sustainable than most textile fibers. Bamboo fabric is light and strong, has excellent wicking properties, and is to some extent antibacterial. Barkcloth- A textured woven, usually printed cotton fabric that was popular in the 30s-40s and 50s as an interiors fabric. The prints were often large vines, leaves and florals. Basket Weave- A distinctive technique of weaving that creates a fabric resembling basket work with interwoven fibers.
