The original texts include religious epics, Shakespeare’s plays, Bengali novels which were written pre- independence, and Hollywood films. This venture uses adaptation theory as well as postmodernist and postcolonial theories to examine how women and men are represented in the adaptations as well as how contemporary audience expectations help to create the identity of the characters in the films.

The Road to Rāmar ājya : Analysing Shah Rukh Khan’s Parallel Text in Commercial Hindi Cinema Sunny Singh London Metropolitan University [email protected] This paper attempts to trace the construction of Shah Rukh Khan’s parallel text with explicit references to the Hindu epic Rāmāyana through an analysis of key cinematic texts produced from 1995 to 2007. The analysis follows the development of Shah Rukh Khan’s star text as a growing narrative drawn from, and interacting with, the epic and its protagonist, Rāma , and his idealised reign, Rāmar ājya , which is used in India to refer to an epoch of social stability. In addition, the paper explores how the star’s parallel text intersects the aspirations of a nation poised at the edge of monumental change, and the ways in which it challenges and subverts the popularly accepted notions of the growth of Hindu nationalist politics in the country in the late-1990s, finally leading to the assertion of a new, post-Hindutva, post-globalization identity as an Indian Muslim. Keywords: Shah Rukh Khan; India; stars; Bollywood; Rāmāyana .

  • Bollywood in South Africa
From “ghetto” to mainstream: Bollywood in South Africa . HASEENAH EBRAHIM Wits School of Arts University of the Witwatersrand [email protected] Abstract This essay explores two aspects of the Bollywood “phenomenon” as it has played out, in the past decade, in South Africa — a part of the Indian diaspora where the popularity of Hindi-language Indian cinema has an established history. Firstly, the article maps the expansion of Bollywood beyond the Indian diasporic audience to so-called “crossover” audiences, a phenomenon I have labelled the “mainstreaming” of Bollywood in South Africa. Secondly, it examines developments in relation to the expansion of Bollywood — South African film industry co-operation, including Bollywood’s use of South Africa for location shooting. Bollywood is apparently trapped in some sort of in South Africa. February 22, 2005 Ms. Sharmila Tagore Chairperson Central Board of Film Certification Bharat Bhawan 91E, Walkeshwar Road Mumbai- 400006 Respected Ms. Tagore, We, the group of SAT (Students Against Tobacco) functioning under the auspices of HRIDAY (Health Related Information Dissemination Amongst Youth) -SHAN (Student Health Action Network), a Delhi based NGO actively engaged in tobacco control activities. We, who represent students from many schools and colleges of Delhi, are participating in “The International Day of Action”, February 22, 2005 being observed by the Smoke Free Movies Network. To mark this day, worldwide, tobacco control advocates are holding events to fight against tobacco menace on screen. We are among the 30 groups in 20 countries (Algeria, Argentina, Benin, Cameroon, Canada, Cook Islands, France, Georgia, Israel, Malaysia, New Zealand, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sri Lanka, United Kingdom, USA, Vietnam and Zimbabwe) around the world who are taking part in this action. On this day, we would like to reiterate our request to Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). We had earlier written to a previous Chairman of CBFC, Mr. Arvind Trivedi, requesting him to take measures to stop projection of tobacco use and brand identification of a tobacco product in Bollywood films (Refer Appendix I). We received reassuring response from Central Board of Film Certification (Refer Appendix II) specifying that under the guidelines of Cinematograph Act, the films are scrutinized to see that the consumption of tobacco or smoking is not encouraged, justified or glamorized through them. We are however, unhappy to observe that not many efforts have been made by CBFC since 2003.
