By the time you get this I will be gone, dust in the eaves, lost shoe by the door, unseen lava tremors over the gone green forest, everything gone gone gone. The image I have of you from space—a microdot vanishing in inky vasts— is the cerulean seed of television planted in the resident brain. Perhaps this is the problem, a pill to plaint a point of view never seen nor fully believed. No doubt a trip of late address, I’m having a vision malfunction. Your ultimate otherness will not yield and we will know you only when it’s all washed away, some friendly face in the bottom of the pool rolling an odd stone out. Deep-ended, we are treads of lost animals, spinning wombs, tides, angelology, all black mass defined as a circle never seen. Name Yes, it is a comfort, the image of earth from space we are told we are told again. Master Plan, I close my eyes and see it all hurtling away—a bean down a cosmic drain, one home arriving and the other departing, same departure of mind as the coal black cold. I was sorry to lose the beautiful lake view, but I found it necessary to remove to the northern quarter of the city, into a very quiet Street behind the mouldering castle. My new home is a katchiu-yashiki, the ancient residence of some samurai of high rank. It is shut off from the street, or rather roadway, skirting the castle moat by a long, high wall coped with tiles. One ascends to the gateway, which is almost as large as that of a temple court, by a low broad flight of stone steps; and projecting from the wall, to the right of the gate, is a look-out window, heavily barred, like a big wooden cage. Thence, in feudal days, armed retainers kept keen watch on all who passed by—invisible watch, for the bars are set so closely that a face behind them cannot be seen from the roadway. -

Oja Rubber Souls: Rock and Roll and the Racial Imagination Abstract This dissertation explores the interplay of popular music and racial thought in the 1960s, and asks how, when, and why rock and roll music “became white.” By Jimi Hendrix’s death in 1970 the idea of a black man playing electric lead guitar was considered literally remarkable in ways it had not been for Chuck Berry only ten years earlier: employing an interdisciplinary combination of archival research, musical analysis, and critical race theory, this project explains how this happened, and in doing so tells two stories simultaneously. -

Three Ages of the Woman and Death Notes on the Representation of Transience of Life in Art Anna Bern BACHELOR’S THESIS May 2021 Degree Programme in Media and Fine Art Fine Art Study Path ABSTRACT Tampereen ammattikorkeakoulu Tampere University of Applied Sciences Degree Programme in Media and Arts Fine Art BERN, ANNA: Three Ages of the Woman and Death Notes on the Representation of Transience of Life in Art Bachelor’s Thesis 32 pages May 2021 In the written part of this bachelor’s thesis a report of the artistic process of the artwork Three Ages of the Woman and Death is presented; an overview of the working process and development of the artwork is provided. The author explains the process behind the creation of the installation. The sources of inspiration, archetype work and traditional art themes and possible meanings could be found in this work. The report includes research on the subject of transience of life in art history. The subject of life and death originating in the primordial past is one of the central topics inherent in all cultures of mankind. The matter of fragility of youth, the in- evitability of death has been used by artists of different times as the fear of death, as well as the fear of aging is rooted deeply in our subconscious, it influences every aspect of human’s life and serves as a source of inspiration. The subject of death in the works of Renaissance artist Hans Balduing Grien and contemporary artist Christian Boltanski is discussed. The discussion of the Camera Lucida, the philosophic essay written by Roland Barthes, is provided. -
