Degree & PG College, Siddipet, Telangana India Abstract Alice Munro is a Canadian short story writer and the recipient of many literary honours, including the 2013 Nobel Prize in Literature for her work as "master of the contemporary short story", and the 2009 Man Booker International Prize for her lifetime body of work. Munro's work has been described as having reformed the architecture of short stories, especially in its propensity to move forward and backward in time. Her stories explore human complexities in straightforward prose style. Alice Munro, writing about ordinary people in ordinary situations, creates a portrait of life in all of its complexities. In her magnificently textured stories, she explores the distinction of relationships, the profundity of emotions, and the influence that one’s past has on the present. With a few details, she is able to invoke someone’s character or an entire geographical region. Munro is a master at creating a short story that is as fully developed as a novel. Born in 1931, her highly acclaimed stories chronicle small town life, usually around Ontario, where she grew up, and primarily deal with human relationships, deeper truths and www.ijellh.com 212 ambiguities. In her tales, primarily written from an entirely feminine point of view, the incidents of life get redefined in the inner landscape of intellect and emotion of the narrator / protagonist which in turn are a reflection of the author’s own perceptions. -

Abstract In this thesis, I compare the short stories, “Boys and Girls” and “The Albanian Virgin”, by Alice Munro, with two films, La Mala Educación and La Piel Que Habito, by Pedro Almodóvar. This comparison analyzes how these authors conceive gender as a doing and a performance, and as culturally constructed rather than biologically determined. My main theoretical framework is Judith Butler’s theory of gender performativity as developed in Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity. In my first chapter, I compare “Boys and Girls” with La Mala Educación, and in the second chapter, I compare “The Albanian Virgin” with La Piel Que Habito, to illustrate the multiple ways in which gender is constructed according to Munro and Almodóvar. -

Courting Johanna: Adapting Alice Munro for the Stage
Shelley Scott University of Lethbridge Courting Johanna: Adapting Alice Munro for the Stage In this paper I will consider Alice Munro’s story “Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage,” which was published in 2001 in a collection of the same name, in the form of its adaption as a play by Marcia Johnson. The play, Courting Johanna, premiered at the Blyth Theatre Festival in 2008 and was published the next year. In considering one of Munro’s stories as a play, I will be joining many other critics in asking how Alice Munro achieves her particular affect, but I will be approaching the question from a transmedia perspective. By asking how this adaptation works on the stage, I will be asking questions about the nature of theatrical representation, the feminism fundamental to Munro’s world view, and whether we can, perhaps paradoxically, understand Munro’s story-writing genius by looking at it in the mirror of the theatre. In my case, I am able to draw on the experience of directing a student production of Courting Johanna at the University of Lethbridge in February 2014 - the perspective of personally bringing the play from page to stage. Alice Munro’s stories have inspired a select number of Canadian film and television adaptations, most famously the 2006 film Away From Her, which won director Sarah Polley a Genie Award and an Oscar nomination for her adapted screenplay. The short story cycle Lives of Girls and Women was adapted for CBC television in 1994, and “Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage” premiered at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival as Hateship Loveship, but has not yet had theatrical release. -

Also present is a photocopied proof copy of of Moons of Jupiter, a collection of short stories by A. Munro published by Macmillan of Canada in 1982, sent to Dr. Martin by Douglas Gibson of Macmillan. Additional material includes audio recordings of Alice Munro reading her own works and of an interview done with her by Peter Gzowski for “This Country in the Morning.” The collection is arranged in 5 series: 1. Throughout her career she has been no stranger to literary awards; she’s taken home the Governor General’s Literary Award (1968, 1978, 1986), the Booker (1980), the Man Booker (2009), and the Giller Prize (1998, 2004), among many others. On October 10, 2013, Canadians were elated to hear that Alice Munro had won the Nobel Prize in Literature. Since the annual award was founded in 1901, it has been awarded to 110 Nobel Laureates, but Munro is the first Canadian—and the 13th woman—ever to win. In order to help publishers ensure they have enough books to meet demand if one of their titles wins an award, BookNet Canada compiles annual literary award studies examining the sales trends in Canada for shortlisted and winning titles. So as soon as the Munro win was announced, the wheels at BookNet started turning. What happens when a Canadian author receives the Nobel Prize in Literature? How much will the sales of their books increase in Canada? And will their sales also increase internationally? Edina Szalay ([email protected]') THE GOTHIC AS ADOLESCENT FANTASY: ALICE MUNRO'S LIVES OF GIRLS AND WOMEN Abstract The Gothic as a means of conveying the sense of the unsayable and invisible yet inherent and organic features of human existence constantly reemerges in Munro 's fiction. Lives of Girls and Women is speciál, however, because there is no other volume in the Munro canon where the analysis of the interrelatedness of Gothic fantasy and female psychology would have such a comprehensive and overarching significance from the point of view of the collection as a whole, i.e., it does develop into a theme on its own. In my analysis I intend to focus on how Del's relationship with men and sexuality in generál are influenced by the Gothic patterns of her fantasy, which are rooted in her excessive reading of such novels. Munro, however, also carries out a "re-visionary" study of the genre, to apply Adrienne Rich's term, when, through mapping out Del's budding sense of independence, she systematically undermines the validity of Gothic discourse. In this way, the Gothic, revisioned by Del in her reading and writing practice, gradually comes to sink into artificiality, and finally proves to be inadequate to provide role models for this teenager—autonomous women being commonly absent from Gothic fiction—who becomes aware of the need to overcome the traditional myths ofwomanhood. “A Sort of Refusal”: Alice Munro’s Reluctant Career Lorraine York s we look back together in this fortieth anniversary issue of Studies in Canadian Literature to the journal’s founding year, 1976, that date stands out to scholars of Canadian lit- eraryA celebrity for a couple of additional reasons. That was the year that Margaret Atwood took the unprecedented step for a Canadian writer of incorporating the business activities of her career as O.W. Toad Limited (an anagram of “Atwood”). The move, probably undertaken for practical and private financial reasons, was little commented upon at the time, but I have argued that it marks a turning point in the his- tory of Canadian writers’ public visibility and professional organization (Margaret Atwood 7). Atwood’s early recognition of the extent of her literary success signalled a nascent recognition of literary celebrity as an industry. Although there is plenty of evidence that Canadian writ- ers considered their work as a business before this — one thinks, for example, of the founding of the Canadian Authors Association in 1921 — Atwood’s incorporation renders explicit the collaborative labour that supports literary celebrity. The very fact that Atwood’s move was not widely discussed, or even recognized as a sign of something larger taking shape in Canadian literary circles, sheds light on these intervening forty years and on the way in which the growing industrialization of literary celebrity has come up against the persistent image of the Canadian writer as solely concerned with aesthetics and humble, restricted fields of small-scale production. As Kit Dobson observes, interviews with Canadian writers “rarely engage writers in conversations about what it means for them to create artistic works in a market that is necessarily concerned with its economic bottom line” (Dobson and Kamboureli 4).
