Nationals agree to terms with inf Stephen Drew Posted by TBN(Staff) On 01/26/2017 The Washington Nationals agreed to terms on a one-year contract with veteran infielder Stephen Drew on Thursday. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement. Drew, 33, returns to Washington for his second season with the Nationals after serving as a key member of Dusty Baker’s bench and a versatile defender during the 2016 season. He hit .266 (38-for-143) with 11 doubles, one triple, eight home runs, 21 RBI, 16 walks and 24 runs scored in 70 games in 2016. Drew posted a .524 slugging percentage, with 20 of his 38 hits going for extra bases. He appeared in games at second base (21 games/15 starts), third base (12 games/8 starts), shortstop (12 games/7 starts), and designated hitter (one game/one start). Drew, along with Chris Heisey, ranked second in Major League Baseball and tied a Nationals club record (2005-pres.) with three pinch-hit home runs in 2016. He was a part of a group of Nationals pinch hitters that finished third in the Major Leagues with 12 pinch-hit home runs, and ranked third in the NL in slugging percentage (.447). The 12 pinch-hit home runs hit by Washington were the most in franchise history (Nationals/Expos). In one of the more impressive swings of the 2016 season, after missing multiple games due to illness, Drew summoned enough strength for a pinch-hit appearance on July 23rd against the San Diego Padres and laced a walk-off triple that gave Washington a 3-2 win. The following day, he was placed on the disabled list with vertigo-like symptoms. He was reinstated on Sept. 7 and hit .275 (11-for-40) with three doubles, one homer, four RBI, seven walks and 10 runs scored in his final 19 games of the season. In 11 Major League seasons, Drew is a career .252 hitter with 251 doubles, 63 triples, 122 home runs, 507 RBI, 427 walks, and 556 runs scored. In 68 career pinch-hit appearances, Drew has hit .283 (17-for-60) with a .368 on-base percentage and a .617 slugging percentage (three doubles, one triple, five home runs) while recording 13 RBI and seven walks. Chris and Zack Cozart, of course, were teammates and are close friends. Their lockers were next to one another at Great American Ball Park. It hasn’t worked out that way thanks to the upstart Pittsburgh Pirates, who have crashed the party and occupy first place, looking to break a string of 19 consecutive losing seasons. “They’re kind of similar to us two years ago,” Reds outfielder Chris Heisey said Thursday as the Reds reassembled for a workout at Great American Ball Park. “They’re starting to believe they can win. I think that’s just as important as anything in this game.” But the Reds believe they can win, too, and feel good about sitting nine games over .500 at the break, one game out of first place and a game-and-a-half ahead of the third-place Cardinals. Their 47-38 record is the third best in the league and they have just come off a 6-5 West Coast trip facing the pleasant prospect of a cozy 10-game homestand. “We’re in a great position,” Reds manager Dusty Baker said, “and we haven’t hit our stride yet. We haven’t played out best baseball for an extended period of time.” When they won the division in 2010, the Reds were 49-41 before the break, 42-30 after.

DAYTON DRAGONS 2019 YEAR IN REVIEW Dayton, Ohio—The Dayton Dragons 20th year of operation included some big stories: • The Dragons celebrated their 20th season of operation, beginning with the return of famous Dragons alumni including Austin Kearns, Ken Griffey Sr., Tom Browning, Todd Coffey, and Chris Dickerson. • The Dragons honored the victims of the Oregon District shooting with a special ceremony at the ballpark on August 5, the day after the tragedy. • In response to widespread tornado damage in the Miami Valley, the Dragons collected donations during games of over 140,000 pounds in food items and over $28,000 in cash for those in need. • Robert Murphy, the Dragons president since the organization’s inception prior to the 2000 season, earned another national award when he was selected as baseball’s “Executive of the Year” by Ballpark Digest. And with two full seasons of data now collected, plus advances in applying that data, Statcast™ is better than ever. New metrics, such as Catch Probability and Hit Probability, will provide a deeper layer of analysis and further our understanding of the game. With that in mind, here are five Statcast™ facts to know about the Reds heading into the 2017 season. 1. Votto-matic You know Joey Votto is one of the best hitters in the world. He has been for years. He's so good that even after finding himself batting .213 at the end of last May, he promptly slashed .378/.482/.619 over the final four months and ended up leading the National League with a .424 wOBA. And, unsurprisingly, Statcast™'s new Hit Probability metric, based on a hitter's combinations of exit velocity and launch angle, ranks Votto just as highly. He does take a slight dock in his expected wOBA, which Statcast™ estimated at .413 for 2016, but guess what? It was still the best expected wOBA in the league.
