2013 Hawaii University International Conferences Education & Technology Math & Engineering Technology June 10th to June 12th Ala Moana Hotel, Honolulu, Hawaii Magic Moment on Magic Island Lee C. Payton Columbia College Chicago MAGIC MOMENT ON MAGIC ISLAND A Paper Presentation by LEE C. PAYTON - Original Content © 2013. A) Sally from Beijing It was Tuesday, January 8th, 2013, the last day of the HUIC Arts, Humanities and Social Services Conference in Ala Moana. That morning I participated in a fantastic workshop on drawing for the non-creative. When the Conference ended, I really needed to wind down before exploring Oahu during the remainder of the week. I took my guitar out to the big tree on the southern most stretch of Magic Island to practice and relax and enjoy the sunset. I had been practicing for about an hour when a young girl walked up with her chaperone, and asked if she could join me. She said her name was Sally, and that she went to high school in Beijing, and that every year a group of students would come to Hawaii to study. In my experience as a professional performer, sharing music in such an intimate context can be very rewarding, often as much as a sold-out venue. Sally asked if I would play a song for her. I asked her which artist was her favorite. She said Taylor Swift, but I didn't know any Taylor Swift songs. I played several songs that I did know, including I Saw Her Standing There - the Beatles hit, which goes over big with everyone in every crowd, everywhere I've ever played it.

  • Biography Jim Curry's Tribute to the Music of John Denver
Biography Jim Curry’s Tribute to the Music of John Denver Jim Curry began his music career writing and performing the opening song, “The Time of Your Life” for his senior play. The song was then voted to be the 1975 class song and Jim was awarded a Rotary Scholarship to study music in college. Even at this early stage in his life Jim’s natural voice resembled that of singer/songwriter John Denver. Embracing the similarities, Jim continued to sing and specialize in the songs of John Denver, sharing John’s positive messages of love, humanity and environmental awareness. The untimely death of John Denver’s in 1997 was a tragedy that was felt the world over. Such a void in the musical world left John's ardent fans demanding that his music survive. CBS television responded by producing a made for TV movie: “Take Me Home, the John Denver Story” in which Jim landed an off-camera role singing as the voice of John Denver. This experience inspired Jim to produce full–length John Denver tribute concerts. He’s not your usual “Vegas style” impersonator. In fact, he is not an impersonator at all. Jim sings, in his own natural voice, a tribute to the music in a way that has to be seen and heard to understand the pure honesty of his amazing performance. His looks and his voice are simply a pleasant coincidence that captures the true essence of John Denver’s music. Curry’s heartfelt delivery rolls out into the crowd as multi-platinum hits like "Rocky Mountain High," "Annie’s Song" and "Calypso" fill the room.

  • Windstar Vision Was Written Before John Denver’S Death in a Plane Crash on October 12, 1997
Dedicated to a Peaceful and Sustainable FutureVisionVisionSummer/Fall1997 The Passing of a Poet The sunshine has left our shoulders for a time. John Denver died. He was killed doing what he loved and I guess that’s the way it ought to be. When you finish your work, you are called home and your earthly work is then left for others to continue for great souls exist to educate and inspire. John was a poet, a singer of songs, a friend to many, an idol of millions the world over. Through the sadness and the emptiness of our hearts, we honor our friend with personal memories of his laughter and his profound intellect. We remember his public gifts of song and self, his harmonies of love and nature, his vision for a sustain- able future and all of the joys of life he shared through an extraordinary ability to entertain. His songs would take us to places where troubles couldn’t reach, at least for a while. His lyrics encouraged us to seek a higher ground. His hugs were special for they were given without condition and his smile personified his spirit and his love of life. In time, we will celebrate his life without the salty sadness of tears. And that’s right. We all come into this John Denver world, make choices, make sacrifices, laugh a little, love a little, cry a little and learn through experience that the true 1943–1997 importance of life is to share our gifts, to be true to ourselves and to make the world a little better place to President and Founder live.

IT’S ABOUT TIME LETTERS TO JOHN DENVER FROM: DONNA LIPMAN HOW I FOUND MY VOICE n my final year of college, at the age of 20, I was participating in an internship at a state hospital, behind locked doors on the eighth floor. It was the ward for emotionally and Imentally challenged patients. My first day on the job, I arrived around lunchtime. For the most part, the staff was at lunch, except for the two nurses behind the chicken-wired office window. I had never seen this kind of window before and wondered what event might have occurred in the past that prompted this reinforced window; a momentarily frightening thought! I walked around the ward, passing patients who were suffering from all kinds of issues. As I wandered through the ward, I came upon the occupational therapy room in the back. It was 8 dark, but I heard some noise coming from inside – like someone in pain. I looked inside and a 9 woman was writhing on the floor, talking about the little blue men who were coming to get her. Sadly, she had slashed every one of her major arteries with a razor blade that was mistakenly left out and accessible. Panicked, I ran to the desk and informed the nurse behind the window of what had happened. And, just like in the TV shows, I heard, “code blue” go out over the loudspeaker in the hospital. They paged the doctor, and thankfully, he was able to save her. DONNA LIPMAN The doctor thanked me for having the presence of mind to get help.

Stuart Rosen Senior Vice President General Counsel November 20, 2015 Chief, Litigation III Section Antitrust Division U.S. Department of Justice 450 5th Street NW, Suite 4000 Washington, DC 20001 Re: Justice Department Review of the BMI and ASCAP Consent Decrees To the Chief of the Litigation III Section: BMI recently alerted its community of affiliated songwriters, composers and publishers to the profound impact 100% licensing would have on their careers, both creatively and financially, if it were to be mandated by the U.S. Department of Justice. In a call to action, BMI provided a letter, one for songwriters and one for publishers, to which their signatures could be added. The response was overwhelming. BMI received nearly 13,000 signatures from writers, composers and publishers of all genres of music, at all levels in their careers. Some of the industry's most well- known songwriters added their names, including Stephen Stills, Cynthia Weil, Steve Cropper, Ester Dean, Dean Pitchford, Congressman John Hall, Trini Lopez, John Cafferty, Gunnar Nelson, Lori McKenna, Shannon Rubicam and Don Brewer, among many others. Enclosed you will find the letters, with signatures attached. On behalf of BMI, I strongly urge you to consider the voices of thousands of songwriters and copyright owners reflected here before making a decision that will adversely affect both the creators, and the ongoing creation of, one ofAmerica's most important cultural and economic resources.
