Imagibash 15 was a huge success and the action got so intense that your old pal the Teamster had to get involved. The exclusive coverage of that ppv is in this very issue so I won’t spoil it and give away the ending like how the ship sinks in Titanic. The Johnny B. Cup is down to just four and here are the representatives from each of the IWAR’s promotions; • BRL Final: Sir Gunther Kinderwacht (last year’s winner) • CWL Final: Jane the Vixen Red (BRL, winner of 2017 Unknown Wrestler League) • IWL Final: Nasty Norman Krasner • NWL Final: Ricky Kyle In one semi-final, we will see bitter rivals Kinderwacht and Red face off while in the other the red-hot Ricky Kyle will face the, well, Nasty Normal Krasner. One of these four will win The self-professed “Greatest Tag team wrestler the 4th Johnny B Cup and the results will determine the breakdown of the prizes. ? in the world” debuted in the NWL in 2012 and taunt-filled promos earned him many enemies. • The Smiling Face of Chris Schukar Is Plastered to the Darkness As Stirring Music Races Through the Speaker
[Darkness.] "POWER" [The smiling face of Chris Schukar is plastered to the darkness as stirring music races through the speaker. The clear voice of Marcus Harden provides commentary.] Marcus Harden (MH): In the beginning, there was Schukar. Riding the high on the creation of the National Wrestling Council's and its birth, Chris took power where it came and prestige where it was deserved. Some said his ego ran roughshod, some said he was crazy. [The NWC logo fills the screen, proud in its majesty.] MH: None could deny his success. Schukar alone built the NWC body, fighting off challengers and growing more and more demanding, more controlling in his grip on the Council. People were fired, people were sacrificed... but one name has stood in his way. [Six letters of glimmering silver stamp themselves to the logo.] MH: Pierce. From the arrogance of Raymond to the intelligence of Andrew, the Pierce name has been synonymous with takeovers and control. Now faced with perhaps his greatest challenge in the enigma known as Alex Pierce, the NWC's very fate hangs in the balance. [Faces appear on the screen. Hunter Sabuani. Eugene Robinson. Maxton Rainstone. Ben Van Iten. Hyuk Suh Kim.] MH: These next two nights, sixteen men will compete for the future, for the right to find out which hand guides the ship. The NWC hangs between Heaven and Hell and heroes will be forever made and villains never forgotten as the National Wrestling Council presents... [BOOM!!!] MH: PURGATORY! [And with fireworks galore and explosions that rock the very Complex we're dropped into, we head to the Purgatory Complex across the Piazza San Marco in Venice.

  • The Oral Poetics of Professional Wrestling, Or Laying the Smackdown on Homer
Oral Tradition, 29/1 (201X): 127-148 The Oral Poetics of Professional Wrestling, or Laying the Smackdown on Homer William Duffy Since its development in the first half of the twentieth century, Milman Parry and Albert Lord’s theory of “composition in performance” has been central to the study of oral poetry (J. M. Foley 1998:ix-x). This theory and others based on it have been used in the analysis of poetic traditions like those of the West African griots, the Viking skalds, and, most famously, the ancient Greek epics.1 However, scholars have rarely applied Parry-Lord theory to material other than oral poetry, with the notable exceptions of musical forms like jazz, African drumming, and freestyle rap.2 Parry and Lord themselves, on the other hand, referred to the works they catalogued as performances, making it possible to use their ideas beyond poetry and music. The usefulness of Parry-Lord theory in studies of different poetic traditions tempted me to view other genres of performance from this perspective. In this paper I offer up one such genre for analysis —professional wrestling—and show that interpreting the tropes of wrestling through the lens of composition in performance provides information that, in return, can help with analysis of materials more commonly addressed by this theory. Before beginning this effort, it will be useful to identify the qualities that a work must possess to be considered a “composition in performance,” in order to see if professional wrestling qualifies. The first, and probably most important and straightforward, criterion is that, as Lord (1960:13) says, “the moment of composition is the performance.” This disqualifies art forms like theater and ballet, works typically planned in advance and containing words and/or actions that must be performed at precise times and following a precise order.
