ECOLOGICAL AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC IMPACTS OF DIVE AND SNORKEL TOURISM IN ST. LUCIA, WEST INDIES Nola H. L. Barker Thesis submittedfor the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Science Environment Department University of York August 2003 Abstract Coral reefsprovide many servicesand are a valuableresource, particularly for tourism, yet they are suffering significant degradationand pollution worldwide. To managereef tourism effectively a greaterunderstanding is neededof reef ecological processesand the impactsthat tourist activities haveon them. This study explores the impact of divers and snorkelerson the reefs of St. Lucia, West Indies, and how the reef environmentaffects tourists' perceptionsand experiencesof them. Observationsof divers and snorkelersrevealed that their impact on the reefs followed certainpatterns and could be predictedfrom individuals', site and dive characteristics.Camera use, night diving and shorediving were correlatedwith higher levels of diver damage.Briefings by dive leadersalone did not reducetourist contactswith the reef but interventiondid. Interviewswith tourists revealedthat many choseto visit St. Lucia becauseof its marineprotected area. Certain site attributes,especially marine life, affectedtourists' experiencesand overall enjoyment of reefs.Tourists were not alwaysable to correctly ascertainabundance of marine life or sedimentpollution but they were sensitiveto, and disliked seeingdamaged coral, poor underwatervisibility, garbageand other tourists damagingthe reef. PULAU SIBU SCIENTIFIC EXPEDITION: CONNECTING THE LAND AND THE SEA FOR BIODIVERSITY MANAGEMENT OF A MARINE PARK ISLAND Jarina Mohd Jani1 et al. 1Institute of Tropical Biodiversity and Sustainable Development, UMT [email protected] The Department of Marine Parks Malaysia (JTLM) and Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) have a long history in marine based collaborations. Recently, in recognizing the need for integrated knowledge on both the marine and terrestrial components of our marine park islands in ensuring a holistic understanding of the island ecosystems for its effective management, a new path was paved by the two institutions by agreeing to jointly organize a scientific expedition in Pulau Sibu, Johor. The aim of this expedition was to document the species, ecosystems and livelihoods on the island, with a focus on its coastal and terrestrial zones. Its secondary aim was contribute sufficient content for the publication of a book on Pulau Sibu’s biodiversity. This first “from land to the sea” scientific expedition under JTLM’s banner was successfully organized from 21 to 25 July 2017. The collaboration was a commendable effort that added value to the biodiversity profile of the marine park island via scientific records of the uniqueness and connectivity between species, ecosystems and livelihoods on the island and contributed towards developing a trans-disciplinary research framework in a marine park ecosystem. Coral reef types in Malaysia are mostly shallow fringing reefs adjacent to the offshore islands. The rest are small patch reefs, atolls and barrier reefs. The United Nations Environment Programme’s World Atlas of Coral Reefs prepared by the Coral Reef Unit, estimated the size of Malaysia’s coral reef area at 3,600sq. km which is 1.27 percent of world total coverage (Spalding et al., 2001). Coral reefs support an abundance of economically important coral fishes including groupers, parrotfishes, rabbit fishes, snappers and fusiliers. Coral fish species from Serranidae, Lutjanidae and Lethrinidae contributed between 10 to 30 percent of marine catch in Malaysia (Wan Portiah, 1990). In Sabah, coral reefs support artisanal fisheries but are adversely affected by unsustainable fishing practices, including bombing and cyanide fishing. Almost 30 percent of Sabah’s marine fish catch comes from coral reef areas (Department of Fisheries Sabah, 1997). -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract- Investigations were conducted to determine the radionuclide uranium-thorium concentration levels in the major rivers in Pahang state, Malaysia. Since the rivers are the main sources for water supply in the state, it is important to measure the uranium-thorium concentrations in the rivers in the effort to limit radiation exposures to members of the public. Seventeen water samples were collected from major rivers in Pahang state. The concentrations of uranium-thorium were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). The samples were found to contain permissible levels of the radionuclides with a mean activity concentrations of 8.49 ± 0.34 mBq L-1 and 1.74 ± 0.27 mBq L-1 for uranium and thorium respectively. The ratio between thorium and uranium concentration is found to be 3:4 due to the higher solubility of uranium than thorium in water. Radionuclide concentrations obtained were compared with the terrestrial gamma radiation dose rate measured around the area. Measurements were carried out using a portable [NaI(TI)] micro roentgen (µR) survey meter and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) for in situ TGRD and the activity concentrations of 238U, 232Th, and 40K in water samples, respectively. The mean TGRD was found to be 312.98 nGy h-1 and from water samples analyzed, the mean activity concentrations of 238U, 232Th, and 40K was found to be 13.31 mBq L-1, 4.39 mBq L-1 and 1118.72 mBq L-1 which were about 3 times and slightly higher than the world average values of 5 mBq L-1 and 3 mBq L-1 respectively.
