LA NARCOSI DA AZOTO di Stefano Ruia 1 - L’EBBREZZA DEGLI ABISSI La narcosi da azoto, definita dai medici “sindrome neuropsichica da aria compressa” (legata cioè alla respirazione di aria in pressione), è uno dei fenomeni che i subacquei imparano a conoscere subito, poiché influenza le immersioni a profondità già comprese nella fascia detta “ricreativa”, e con la quale tutti abbiamo dovuto imparare a convivere. Eppure ancora oggi la scienza non ha compreso del tutto i meccanismi biologici di questo stato di alterazione psicologica e ottenebramento mentale. Approfondiamo con questo dossier lo “stato dell’arte” su questo fenomeno, tanto comune e misterioso. Fu uno dei primi film subacquei che vidi. Era il “Il Mondo del Silenzio” di Cousteau, filmato – come operatore - da quel grande cineasta che sarà Louis Malle. Fu girato nella seconda metà degli anni ’50 dello scorso secolo. Beh, non sono così vecchio, ma quando la TV lo ripropose, qualche anno dopo, mi fu permesso di vederlo (allora per guardare la TV dopo “Carosello” i bambini dovevano ottenere – e non era facile - il permesso … bei tempi!). Una scena mi colpì molto. Durante una delle consuete “razzie” sui fondali (a quei tempi erano permesse e anzi rappresentavano la spinta più forte all’immersione con le bombole) il subacqueo perdeva il controllo e lo riacquistava solo in risalita. Aveva subito l’influsso della perfida “ebbrezza di profondità”. Questo terribile nemico mi metteva in agitazione, soprattutto quando mio padre partiva per andare a caccia subacquea al mare. Allora non facevo differenza fra apnea e autorespiratore. Così, come molti altri subacquei, sono cresciuto con l’idea che gli eroi della “Calipso” (la nave di Cousteau) per primi avessero scoperto questo tremendo fenomeno con cui fare i conti. -

To managereef tourism effectively a greaterunderstanding is neededof reef ecological processesand the impactsthat tourist activities haveon them. This study explores the impact of divers and snorkelerson the reefs of St. Lucia, West Indies, and how the reef environmentaffects tourists' perceptionsand experiencesof them. Observationsof divers and snorkelersrevealed that their impact on the reefs followed certainpatterns and could be predictedfrom individuals', site and dive characteristics.Camera use, night diving and shorediving were correlatedwith higher levels of diver damage.Briefings by dive leadersalone did not reducetourist contactswith the reef but interventiondid. Interviewswith tourists revealedthat many choseto visit St. Lucia becauseof its marineprotected area. Coral reef types in Malaysia are mostly shallow fringing reefs adjacent to the offshore islands. The rest are small patch reefs, atolls and barrier reefs. The United Nations Environment Programme’s World Atlas of Coral Reefs prepared by the Coral Reef Unit, estimated the size of Malaysia’s coral reef area at 3,600sq. km which is 1.27 percent of world total coverage (Spalding et al., 2001). Coral reefs support an abundance of economically important coral fishes including groupers, parrotfishes, rabbit fishes, snappers and fusiliers. Coral fish species from Serranidae, Lutjanidae and Lethrinidae contributed between 10 to 30 percent of marine catch in Malaysia (Wan Portiah, 1990). In Sabah, coral reefs support artisanal fisheries but are adversely affected by unsustainable fishing practices, including bombing and cyanide fishing. Almost 30 percent of Sabah’s marine fish catch comes from coral reef areas (Department of Fisheries Sabah, 1997). -

Z . 2 1 School of Science and Technology, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, 88999 Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia 2 Department of Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Environmental Studies, Universiti Putra Malaysia, 43400 UPM Serdang, Selangor, Malaysia Received 12 Feb. 2009; Revised 15 March 2010; Accepted 25 March 2010 ABSTARCT: Freshwater lens on small islands may easily be overexploited or polluted due to overdrafts of fresh water by pumping which causes drawdown of the water table a rise or up-coning of the saltwater interface. Present study is concerned with using a three-dimensional finite-difference numerical model to simulate the groundwater flow and transport model to predict the behavior of groundwater system in Manukan Island. The simulations were done using variable density SEAWAT-2000 for three selected pumping schemes. Hydraulic heads (groundwater level) is the highest at the center of the island and decreases in radial shape towards the coast in all the pumping schemes (PS1-PS3). The chloride concentration in the studied aquifer increased by 98.7% in the pumping well if the pumping rate is doubled by the current (PS2 to PS3). The 1.4% seawater-freshwater mixing moves further forward to inland about 1.6m when the current pumping rate was doubled whereas moves backward to sea about 1.7m if the current pumping rate is reduced by 50%. This preliminary model of Manukan island aquifer shows that an overexploitation of groundwater in Manukan Island contributes to the seawater intrusion. -

Monad Shoal is a standard municipality MPA, and 150 Pesos (US$ 3) per visitor to the island per day is collected by the municipality as a marine park fee. While some of the fees collected have been used to install mooring buoys, how the majority of the funds are used is unclear, and enforcement of the ban on all fishing within the MPA was weak.
