It suggests that the movement's repeated anomalies, denial of heritage, privileging of vegetarianism, and other concessions to bloody culture, restrict rather than liberate the full subversionary and revelatory potential of liberationist discourse, and with representation and strategy implications. ‘Only the profoundest cultural needs … initially caused adult man [sic] to continue to drink cow milk through life’.1 In The Social Construction of Nature, Klaus Eder develops a useful concept of two cultures - the bloody and the bloodless. He understands the ambivalence of modernity and the relationship to nature as resulting from the perpetuation of a precarious equilibrium between the ‘bloodless’ tradition from within Judaism and the ‘bloody’ tradition of ancient Greece. In Genesis, killing entered the world after the fall from grace and initiated a complex and hierarchically-patterned system of food taboos regulating distance between nature and culture. But, for Eder, it is in Israel that the reverse process also begins, in the taboo on killing. This ‘civilizing’ process replaces the prevalent ancient world practice of 1 Calvin. W. DISSERTATION PROFESSIONALIZATION, FACTIONALISM, AND SOCIAL MOVEMENT SUCCESS: A CASE STUDY ON NONHUMAN ANIMAL RIGHTS MOBILIZATION Submitted by Corey Lee Wrenn Department of Sociology In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Colorado State University Fort Collins, Colorado Spring 2016 Doctoral Committee: Advisor: Michael Carolan Lynn Hempel Michael Lacy Marcela Velasco Copyright by Corey Lee Wrenn 2016 All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT PROFESSIONALIZATION, FACTIONALISM, AND SOCIAL MOVEMENT SUCCESS: A CASE STUDY ON NONHUMAN ANIMAL RIGHTS MOBILIZATION This project explores the intra-movement interactions between professionalized and radical factions in the social movement arena using a content analysis of movement literature produced by the Nonhuman Animal rights movement between 1980 and 2013. Professionalized factions with greater symbolic capital are positioned to monopolize claimsmaking, disempower competing factions, and replicate their privilege and legitimacy. Radical factions, argued to be important variables in a movement’s health, are thus marginalized, potentially to the detriment of movement success and the constituency for whom they advocate. Specifically, this study explores the role of professionalization in manipulating the tactics and goals of social movement organizations and how the impacts of professionalization may be aggravating factional boundaries. Boundary maintenance may prevent critical discourse within the movement, and it may also provoke the “mining” of radical claimsmaking for symbols that have begun to resonate within the movement and the public. Analysis demonstrates a number of important consequences to professionalization that appear to influence the direction of factional disputes, and ultimately, the shape of the movement. Results indicate some degree of factional fluidity, but professionalization does appear to be a dominant force on movement trajectories by concentrating power in the social change space. -

Remarks for the Institute of Jainology parliamentary reception Theme of speech: Conscious Compassion Thanks Thanks to the Instiute of Jainology to celebrate Ahimsa Day with you. Particular thank you to my old friend Navnit Dholakia for hosting us, and to Barry Gardiner (Chair, Labour Friends of India ) and Shailesh Vara (Chair, Conservative Friends of India). Timely occasion - last Friday was World Animal Day. Ahimsa Ahimsa is a Sanskrit term for nonviolence (literally, "do not injure"). A concept in Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism, ahimsa is based on the premise that all living beings share the same divine spiritual energy. Since all beings share this connection, to harm another being physically, emotionally, or verbally is to harm oneself. The Eastern traditions - Jains, Hinduism, Buddhism - share a fine tradition of demonstrating compassion and laying down the principles of respect to fellow animals. I had the privilege recently visiting temples of all three faiths in London and Birmingham and have been moved by the dedication to animal welfare in all three communities. A particular moving experience to go to the Jain Paryushan Festival at the Oshwal Centre in North London last year. Such was the importance to me as CEO of the RSPCA that I took with me two of our most senior trustees. Vision of working in partnership with faiths. RSPCA heritage and faiths RSPCA itself is anchored in faiths and religious diversity. Established by the Anglican visionary Rev Arthur Broome, the Society’s first Secretary was the Jewish Lewis Gompertz. Broome worked tirelessly with the Irish MP Richard Martin in galvanizing support for animals and establishing the Society in 1824. -

Pacific Coast Theological Society Spring 2016 Animal Justice and Moral Mendacity∗ by Purushottama Bilimoria Introduction There is always the risk of romanticization when it comes to tackling the topic of animals, in classical discourses to contemporary practices. There are numerous issues to consider where animals are depicted and represented, or misrepresented. These may pertain to human sacrifice of animals, symbolic imagery in high-order astral practices, mythic and hybrid iconography in ancient mythologies, art and religions. We might next mention the depiction of animals as the denizens of monstrous evil, as threatening part of ‘brutish nature’, living out the law of the jungle, and hence requiring to be subdued under the law of the survival of the fittest. Huge dinosaurs, mammoths and other ‘monsters’ (think of "Jaw", "Armageddon", "Avatar", etc) are reconstructed (often digitally) or virtually resurrected from fossils and archeological excavations, with a certain degree of imaginative extrapolation, albeit without theoretical sophistication, which end up being projected on large cinemascope screens. Then there is the utilitarian deployment of animals in agro- culture, farming – the importance of the poultry, bovine, sea-and- water creatures, and a variety of other animal species ("delicacies") in dietary praxis and food consumption (meat industry, factory farming); but also in game hunting; the circus and the zoo, domestic pet culture; animal guide (for the challenged human); veterinarian vivisection; animal exhibitions (at annual shows and sale-yards, as once the practice with slaves in this country); not to mention beastiality and ∗ A version of this paper appeared in the e-journal : Berkeley Journal for Religion and Theology, vol 1 no 1, 2015: 56-79. -

109 BETWEEN THE SPECIES Egalitarianism and Animals ABSTRACT The moral consideration of nonhuman animals and the critique of speciesism have been defended by appeal to a variety of ethical theo- ries. One of the main approaches in moral and political philosophy today from which to launch such a defense is egalitarianism, which is the view that we should aim at favoring the worse off by reducing inequality. This paper explains what egalitarianism is and shows the important practical consequences it has for nonhuman animals, both those that are exploited by humans and those in need of aid in the wild. Egalitarianism implies rejecting speciesism, and in practice it prescribes ceasing to exploit nonhuman animals as well as assist- ing them. Moreover, because they are worse off in comparison to humans, egalitarianism prescribes giving priority to the interests of nonhuman animals. Due to this, egalitarianism gives us extra rea- sons to defend them beyond those entailed by other nonspeciesist approaches.
